Website Redesign Cost: What Drives the Price

Website redesign quotes for the same brief routinely differ by a factor of five, and the spread is rarely explained by design quality. It is explained by scope that was never written down: how much content is being rewritten rather than moved, how many templates are being built rather than reused, what has to integrate with what, and who is responsible for the migration that decides whether your existing search visibility survives. This page explains what actually sits behind the number, how to write a brief that makes quotes comparable, and the terms to settle before work starts so that owning the finished site is not a negotiation.

How to get comparable redesign quotes

  1. Count your templates, not your pages. List the distinct page types you need: home, service, location, article, case study, contact, and any others. Templates drive build cost far more than page count, since a hundred pages on four templates is a smaller job than twenty pages each designed individually.
  2. Decide who writes the content before you ask for a price. Content is the largest hidden cost and the most common cause of a stalled project. Say explicitly in the brief whether the agency is rewriting everything, editing what exists, or pouring your final copy into templates, and get that line priced separately in every quote.
  3. List every integration by name. Booking systems, payment providers, CRM, marketing automation, inventory, patient or client portals, single sign-on. Each is engineering work whose difficulty depends on what the vendor exposes, and an integration discovered mid-project is the standard reason a fixed price stops being fixed.
  4. Require a migration plan in the proposal. Ask how URLs will map from old to new, how redirects will be built and tested, and who checks the site after launch. A redesign without a migration plan is the most reliable way to lose years of accumulated search visibility over one weekend.

What actually drives the number

Five things explain most of the spread. Template count comes first, because each distinct page type is designed, built, made responsive and tested. Content scope is second and is usually the largest single line when it is included at all: writing or rewriting substantial pages, with subject review where the topic demands it, is a project in its own right. Integrations are third, and they vary enormously depending on whether a vendor offers a clean interface or has to be worked around.

Fourth is the platform decision. Building on a mainstream content management system your team can hire for costs differently from a custom build or a proprietary platform, and the proprietary route is cheaper up front and more expensive to leave. Fifth is the non-visual work buyers forget to ask for: accessibility, which the Department of Justice has published guidance on for organisations covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, performance against measurable page experience thresholds, analytics and conversion tracking, and the redirect map. Ask for those as named lines so that a cheaper quote is revealed as a smaller scope rather than a better deal.

Protecting the visibility you already have

The most expensive redesign is the one that looks better and earns less. It happens when URLs change without redirects, when pages that were quietly ranking are deleted as part of a tidy-up, when content is cut for aesthetic reasons, or when a new front end slows the site down. Before design starts, export your current pages with their traffic and their queries, and mark the ones that must survive with their content and their intent intact.

Then require four things in the plan: a URL map from every old address to a new one, redirects implemented and tested before launch rather than after, a crawl of the staging site to catch broken links and missing metadata, and a post-launch check in Search Console during the first fortnight. Ask who owns each of those and when. Google publishes both its page experience thresholds and its general search guidance, which gives you a public standard to hold the plan against instead of the agency's assurance.

Terms to settle before work starts

Ownership first: the domain, the hosting account, the source files, the content and the analytics property should be in your name, and you should be able to take the site elsewhere. Ask explicitly whether the build is portable or lives on a platform only that agency can host, because the second is a subscription to your own website and the price of leaving is a rebuild.

Then settle payment milestones tied to deliverables rather than to dates, a written change process so scope additions are priced as they arise instead of argued about at the end, a defect period after launch during which bugs are fixed at no charge, and what ongoing support costs. Many buyers find the sensible shape is a fixed-price build plus a separate monthly care plan for hosting, updates, backups and a named number of change hours, and those two lines should be quoted separately so each can be judged on its own.

Questions people actually ask

Why do redesign quotes vary so much?
Almost always because they are pricing different scopes. Content, integrations, accessibility work, migration planning and post-launch support are included in some quotes and silently excluded from others. Ask every agency to price the same written brief and to itemise those five lines, and most of the apparent variation resolves into like-for-like comparison.
Will a redesign hurt my search rankings?
It can, and the risk is concentrated in URL changes, deleted pages, removed content and slower performance. A redesign with a tested redirect map, preserved content on the pages that were performing, and a post-launch check in Search Console usually holds its position and sometimes improves it. One without those is a gamble.
Should I redesign or improve what I have?
If your current site converts reasonably and the complaint is that it looks dated, a template refresh, faster performance and better content usually deliver more per dollar than a rebuild. A full redesign is justified when the structure, the platform or the content model actively prevents what the business needs to do.
How long should a redesign take?
The build is rarely the constraint; content and approvals are. Ask each agency for a schedule that names who supplies content, when, and how many review rounds are assumed. Then judge the timeline on whether your side can actually meet those dates, because that is where most overruns originate.
