Choosing the Best SEO Agency for SaaS

Software companies buy search work for a reason no other category shares: a signup is close to free to serve, which means an organic acquisition channel that compounds can change the shape of the whole business. It also means the market is full of agencies selling content calendars to founders who needed a product-led acquisition strategy. The work that matters for a software company is narrow and specific: finding the queries where someone is already choosing a tool, building the comparison and alternative pages that capture them, making the product's own surfaces indexable, and earning the authority that lets any of it rank. This page sets out how to compare providers on evidence they have already published rather than on the confidence of the pitch.

How to compare SaaS SEO agencies

  1. Ask which queries they would target, and why those. A serious answer names bottom-of-funnel terms: your category term, competitor alternatives, integration and use-case queries, and the jobs your product does that people search by name. A weak answer proposes volume-led blog topics with no path from reader to trial. Ask what they would refuse to write and why.
  2. Demand named clients in software and verify them yourself. Ask for two or three software clients you may contact, then search the terms those products should own and read the pages before you call. You are checking whether the work shipped, held and reads like a person wrote it. Ask each reference what happened in months one through six, not just the headline result.
  3. Ask how links will be earned and get it in writing. Authority decides whether comparison pages rank at all, and it is where the compliance risk sits. Ask for the specific tactics, ask whether anything is paid for, and read Google's spam policies on link schemes before you accept the answer. A provider who will not describe its link sourcing is describing a risk you would be buying.
  4. Get pricing, the hour split, and account ownership. Ask for a disclosed minimum, a breakdown of hours across technical work, content, authority and reporting, and who fills them. Then confirm in the contract that the site, content, analytics and Search Console properties belong to your company from day one and remain yours if the engagement ends.

What SaaS search work actually consists of

Four workstreams carry a software company and the useful question is which one you are short of. Bottom-of-funnel capture is the first and most underbuilt: pages for your category term, for each meaningful competitor alternative, for integrations, and for the specific use cases buyers name when they are already shopping. These convert at a rate the rest of the programme cannot match, and most companies have almost none of them. Educational content is the second, and it earns trust and links but converts slowly, so it should be funded as an investment rather than judged on trial signups in quarter one.

The third is technical and architectural work, which for software companies usually means making documentation, changelogs, templates and any programmatic surfaces crawlable and useful rather than blocked or thin. The fourth is authority: without links from sources that would exist whether or not you paid, competitive comparison terms simply will not rank, however good the page. An agency that leads with a content calendar and treats the other three as add-ons is describing its own capability rather than your acquisition model.

What it costs and what moves the number

Retainers in this market are quoted monthly and the spread is explained by content volume, whether authority building is included, and how much engineering-adjacent work is in scope. A programme producing a handful of deeply researched pages a month with dedicated authority work costs multiples of one producing a larger volume of general articles, and the first is usually the better purchase for a software company. Where a provider bills separately for links, treat that line with care and ask exactly what is being bought.

Judge any figure against your own arithmetic rather than against other quotes. If your average contract value is substantial and your payback period is measured in months, a retainer that produces a small number of additional qualified trials per month is inexpensive. If your product is low-priced and self-serve, the maths demands volume and the programme has to be built for it. Ask each candidate to walk through that calculation with your numbers before quoting, and be sceptical of any who will not.

The evidence a serious provider can already show you

Published pricing or a disclosed minimum is the first signal, because a firm willing to name its floor can be compared with another firm while a quote-only firm prices off what your funding round suggests you can pay. Named clients you may actually contact are the second, and the reference call should be about the first six months rather than the highlight reel. Work you can inspect is the third: ask which specific pages they built and go read them.

Then check what they do with measurement. Rankings and traffic are inputs; the reportable outcomes are qualified signups or demo requests attributed to specific pages, and the share of your category and competitor terms you actually occupy. Ask for a sample report from a live client with the name redacted. If the sample leads with sessions and impressions, that is what you will receive every month, and it will not settle a single argument about whether the money worked.

Questions people actually ask

How long does SaaS SEO take to pay back?
Bottom-of-funnel comparison and alternative pages can begin producing trials within a few months if your domain already has some authority. Broader educational programmes take two to four quarters to compound. A provider promising material pipeline inside ninety days on a new domain is describing something they do not control.
Should we hire an agency or a full-time SEO lead?
An in-house lead is better once the programme is large enough to justify one and you have writers who understand the product. An agency is better for building the initial architecture and authority, where breadth of experience matters most. Many companies use an agency to build and an internal hire to run it afterwards.
Are competitor comparison pages risky?
They are standard practice and they convert well, but claims about a competitor must be accurate, current and substantiable, since advertising rules apply to comparative claims. Agree who verifies the factual accuracy of each comparison before publication and how often those pages are refreshed as both products change.
What should be in the contract?
A disclosed fee with the media or link spend separated, a named team, ownership of the site, content, analytics and Search Console properties, a notice period you can live with, and a stated review point. Ask explicitly what happens to pages built on the agency's own tooling if you leave.
