Local Link Building Service

A local link building service earns mentions and links from websites in your city and your industry: the chamber of commerce, the league your team sponsors, the trade association, the local newspaper, the supplier who lists its installers. Done properly it is slow, relationship-heavy work that also produces referral traffic and real-world credibility. Done badly it is a monthly invoice for placements on sites nobody reads, bought from a network, in breach of Google's link spam policies. This page explains how the work is priced, what a legitimate placement looks like, and how to tell the two versions apart before you have twelve months of the wrong one.

How to compare local link building services

  1. Ask for the last twenty links they built for a comparable client. Not a sample of the best ones: the last twenty in order. Open each and ask whether a real person would ever read that page, whether the site serves an actual audience, and whether the link sits in genuine editorial context rather than in a paid roundup of unrelated businesses.
  2. Establish whether anything is paid, and how it is disclosed. Ask plainly whether placements involve payment to the publisher, and if so how the resulting link is marked. Google's spam policies treat exchanging money for links that pass ranking signals as link spam unless the link is qualified, so an evasive answer here is the answer.
  3. Check that the targets are genuinely local and relevant. Local means your metro and your trade: sponsorships, suppliers, associations, local media, local charities, local event listings. A prospect list full of general-interest blogs in other countries is a network under a local label, and it will not help you rank in your own city.
  4. Agree the reporting format before you start. You want live URLs with the date placed, the anchor text used, and whether the link is followed or qualified. Vague monthly counts of 'links acquired' are unverifiable, and a vendor unwilling to hand you the URLs is telling you something about where they came from.

What legitimate local link work actually looks like

The honest version leans on things your business already does. You sponsor a youth team, and the club lists sponsors. You supply or install a manufacturer's product, and that manufacturer maintains a dealer locator. You belong to a trade association or a chamber, and members get a profile. You host an event, run an apprenticeship, donate to a local cause, publish local data nobody else has, or a local reporter needs a quote from someone who understands your trade. Each of those is a real relationship with a page attached, and each is defensible to any reviewer.

It is also, unavoidably, slow. A good month might produce a handful of placements, not dozens, and some of the best ones are impossible to schedule because they depend on someone else's editorial decision. Any service promising a fixed high number every month is either buying them or counting things that are not links, such as unlinked directory entries or social profiles.

The pricing shapes and what they signal

Three shapes are common: a monthly retainer for outreach capacity, a price per placement, and a bundled package inside a broader SEO retainer. Per placement pricing is transparent and also the shape most likely to drift toward purchased links, because the vendor only gets paid when a link appears, and the fastest way to make a link appear is to pay for it. Retainers pay for the outreach work whether or not a particular pitch lands, which is closer to how the honest version behaves.

Be suspicious of very low per-link pricing. Genuine outreach involves research, a pitch, a relationship and often an asset worth linking to, and that time has a floor. When a price sits far below that floor, the link is coming from inventory. The eventual cost is not just wasted spend: links acquired in breach of Google's link spam policies can be discounted or worse, and cleaning up a bad profile is its own project.

How to judge whether it worked

Link building is a means, so measure the end. Track visibility for the local terms you are targeting and the referral traffic from each placement, and keep the two separate: a link that sends real visitors has value even if rankings move slowly. Expect a lag of months rather than weeks, and expect the effect to be uneven, since a single mention from a well-regarded local publisher can be worth more than twenty small placements.

Watch for the failure signature too. If visibility does not move after a sustained programme, look at whether the pages being linked to deserve to rank in the first place. Links amplify a page that is already a credible answer; they rarely rescue a thin one. A service that keeps selling links into a site with no substantive local pages is treating the symptom.

Questions people actually ask

Are paid links against Google's rules?
Buying or selling links that pass ranking signals is covered by Google's link spam policies. Paid placements are allowed where the link is qualified with the appropriate attribute so it does not pass those signals. That distinction is what any vendor should be able to explain without hesitation, and it should appear in their reporting.
How many local links do I need?
There is no threshold, and any vendor quoting one is guessing. The practical answer comes from looking at the businesses currently outranking you in your city and seeing what kind of local presence they have. Usually the gap is qualitative, a handful of genuinely respected local mentions, rather than a number to be matched.
Do citations and directories count as links?
Consistent name, address and phone listings on the main data aggregators and a few reputable local directories matter for local search accuracy, but they are hygiene rather than link building. Buying hundreds of low-quality directory submissions is the classic way to make a link report look busy while achieving nothing.
Can I do this in-house instead?
Often yes, and for a single-location business it is frequently the better option, because the relationships are yours already. The suppliers, associations, clubs and local causes you deal with are the whole prospect list. A service is worth paying for when you have many locations, no time, or need outreach at a scale a busy owner cannot sustain.
