Choosing a car dealer SEO company on published evidence
Dealership search is a strange market. The inventory changes every day, a large part of the site is generated by a platform you did not choose and may not be able to change, and the manufacturer sits above everything with co-op rules and approved vendor lists. An agency that has never worked with a dealer will spend three months discovering all of that. This page shows what the agencies in our index publish about price, minimums and named dealer clients, and sets out the checks that matter specifically in automotive retail rather than the generic ones that apply to any local business.

How to shortlist a car dealer SEO company
- Establish what they can actually change on your website platform. Most dealer sites run on a small number of platforms with tight limits on templates, page creation and technical settings. Ask each candidate which platforms they have worked on, what they can edit directly, and what has to be raised as a ticket with the provider. An agency that cannot change titles, headings or page templates is selling advice, not implementation.
- Check manufacturer co-op and approved vendor status. If you intend to claim co-op funds, the agency's work and reporting have to fit the programme's rules, and some manufacturers only reimburse approved vendors. Confirm status for your brand before you sign rather than after the first claim is rejected, and get the reimbursement documentation requirements in writing.
- Separate new, used and fixed operations in the plan. New car searches are dominated by manufacturer and aggregator sites, used inventory is a long tail of individual vehicles, and service and parts is a genuine local search opportunity most dealers underinvest in. Ask which of the three the proposal actually targets, because fixed operations is frequently where the fastest return sits.
- Fix attribution before spending anything. Agree what counts as a lead, how phone calls are tracked, how the agency's numbers reconcile with your CRM, and who owns the analytics and Search Console properties. Dealership marketing is famous for double counting across vendors, so insist that the source of truth is your CRM rather than any single vendor's dashboard.
What actually moves a dealership's organic performance
The reliable gains are unfashionable. Correct and complete local business structured data and a fully verified business profile for the dealership, and separate profiles for the service department where appropriate, put you in the map results where a large share of dealer intent resolves. Fast, crawlable vehicle detail pages matter more than most dealers realise, and inventory that appears and disappears needs sensible handling so that sold vehicles do not leave a trail of dead pages.
Beyond that, the durable asset is content the platform does not generate: model comparison pages, service and repair information for the models you sell, financing explanations written for real buyers, and pages for the towns around your store that say something specific about serving them. Google's spam policies treat mass produced pages made primarily for search as a violation, so beware of any vendor proposing hundreds of near identical town or model pages.
Advertising claims, pricing and what the index records
Automotive advertising claims are scrutinised, particularly around price, financing terms and availability. The Federal Trade Commission publishes guidance for the automobile industry covering advertising and financing practices, and it applies to your website and landing pages as much as to broadcast. Ask who reviews price and finance language before it publishes, and make sure the answer is somebody at the dealership.
Our index records what each agency states publicly: pricing or starting retainers, disclosed minimums, which services run in house, and the dealer clients they name. Entries are dated, and an absence of published pricing is recorded as an absence rather than estimated. We do not accept payment for placement. For dealerships specifically, the most useful check is naming two dealer clients on comparable platforms and asking what changed on those sites in the first ninety days.
Questions people actually ask
- Can an SEO agency work around my website provider's limits?
- Partly. A good agency knows what each major dealer platform allows and works within it, using the fields and page types that are editable. What it cannot do is fix a platform that generates uncrawlable inventory pages. If that is your situation, the platform decision comes before the agency decision.
- Is service and parts worth optimising?
- Usually yes, and it is the most commonly neglected part of a dealer's search presence. Service queries are local, high intent and far less contested than new vehicle terms, and the revenue is repeatable. Ask whether the proposal includes it or quietly assumes vehicle sales only.
- How do I stop vendors double counting leads?
- Make the CRM the single source of truth, require every vendor to report against the same lead definition, and reconcile monthly. Where the agency's dashboard and your CRM disagree, the CRM wins and the agency explains the gap.
- Should the same vendor run SEO and paid search?
- It can work and it simplifies attribution arguments, but only if both are genuinely in house. Ask which discipline is the agency's core competence and which is a bolt on, and ask to meet the person who would run the smaller of the two.
