Choosing a dentist SEO company on evidence

Hiring a dentist SEO company is a local search purchase before it is anything else. The map results, the Business Profile behind them and the review stream attached to it decide most of what a practice sees, and the site supports that rather than replacing it. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so a practice can build a shortlist from printed prices, stated specialisation and verifiable proof rather than from a call.

How to compare a dentist SEO company

  1. Name the treatment you want more of. General checkups, implants and orthodontics are different searches, different competition and different patient values. Decide which treatment the engagement exists to fill before you shortlist, because it changes which pages get built and which agencies are worth a conversation at all.
  2. Ask who touches the Business Profile. Most of the visible prize for a practice sits in local results. Ask exactly what the agency will change on your Google Business Profile, who has access, and what happens to that access when the contract ends. Access to the profile is the single most consequential thing you will hand over.
  3. Get the review process in writing. Review requests are regulated, and the practice carries the risk when a vendor sends them. Ask to see the exact wording, the trigger, and whether anything of value is offered. A vendor that cannot show you the message it sends in your name should not be sending it.
  4. Separate content from links in the quote. Ask which line of the retainer buys pages written about your treatments and which buys outreach for links. Both can be legitimate; only one of them is visible on your website. A quote that shows a single monthly figure with no split cannot be compared with a competing quote at all.
  5. Check the agency against its own published pages. Named team, published address, printed prices where they exist, and case detail that names the practice rather than reporting an anonymous uplift. Everything listed in this index is held to that standard, and it takes minutes to apply to any name a colleague recommends.

Local search is most of the work

Google publishes what drives local ranking and keeps it to three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well the profile matches the search, distance is proximity to the searcher, and prominence is how well known the business is. Google's help pages add that complete hours help, that being clear about what kind of business you are helps, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. It also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

That last sentence is the most useful line in any dental SEO sales conversation. A vendor that hints at preferential placement, an inside contact or paid position in the map results is describing something Google says does not exist. The honest version of the pitch is slower and checkable: fix the profile, earn reviews legitimately, publish pages that answer real patient questions, and build the practice's local prominence.

Patient information is not marketing inventory

A dental practice handling protected health information sits under the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which defines marketing broadly as a communication about a product or service that encourages recipients to purchase or use it, and generally requires written patient authorisation before protected health information is used or disclosed for marketing, with limited exceptions. Selling patient lists to third parties without authorisation from each person on the list is prohibited outright.

The practical consequence is that any agency proposing to upload a patient list into an ad platform, publish a case study with identifiable patient detail, or run a recall campaign against clinical records is proposing something the practice has to authorise properly first. Ask where patient data will travel, who else will hold it, and what the data agreement says. An agency that has never had this conversation with a dental client is telling you something about its client list.

What a fair engagement looks like

Expect the first months to be corrective rather than dramatic: the profile cleaned up, tracking made honest, the treatment pages that do not exist yet written and published. Google's own starter guidance notes that some changes take effect within hours while others take several months, which is why a sensible contract sets a review point rather than a promised position by a promised date.

Expect the reporting to name pages and searches, not just totals. A practice should be able to see which treatment pages produced calls and which searches brought people in, because that is the only report that tells you what to build next. Where a provider reports a single traffic line with no breakdown, ask for the breakdown before renewing; if it does not exist, neither does the analysis you are paying for.

Questions people actually ask

Can a dentist SEO company guarantee the top map result?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and its Business Profile help says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. A ranking promise is a claim about a system whose owner has published the opposite.
Should we pay patients for reviews?
No. Incentives conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment are prohibited under the FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, and reviews from owners or managers require disclosure. Ask any agency to show the review request wording it will send in your name.
Can an agency use our patient list for ads?
Not without proper authorisation. The HIPAA Privacy Rule generally requires written patient authorisation before protected health information is used for marketing, and prohibits selling patient lists without authorisation. Settle data handling in the contract before any list moves.
What should a dental SEO retainer actually cover?
At minimum: Business Profile management, treatment pages written for patients rather than search engines, technical hygiene on the site, and reporting that names pages and searches. Ask for the split between content and link work in the quote so competing quotes can be compared.
