National SEO Services: What You Are Actually Buying
National SEO is what you buy when your customers are not defined by geography: software companies, ecommerce brands, publishers, franchisors and any business that can serve someone in another state as easily as someone down the road. It is a genuinely different product from local SEO, and it is priced and won differently. There is no map result to earn, no profile to optimize, and no proximity advantage to lean on, so everything rests on having pages worth ranking and enough credibility to rank them. This page explains what national engagements contain, what separates a serious proposal from an expensive one, and how to compare providers before you commit.

How to evaluate a national SEO proposal
- Check the keyword set is buying-intent, not vanity. A national target list should be dominated by queries where somebody is trying to solve a problem you charge for. Broad head terms with enormous volume look impressive in a deck and convert poorly. Ask what proportion of the target list a buyer would plausibly search within a month of purchasing, and push back if the answer is vague.
- Ask what gets built, and by whom, each month. National rankings come from pages that deserve to rank. The proposal should say how many pages ship per month, who writes them, and what subject expertise sits behind them. Strategy-only retainers with no production attached leave you to do the hardest and most expensive part yourself, often without realising it.
- Interrogate the link plan specifically. National competition is where link acquisition genuinely matters and also where the worst practices live. Ask exactly how links are earned, on what sites, and whether anything is paid for. Paid link schemes violate published search spam policies and the risk lands on your domain, not the agency's, long after the contract ends.
- Agree the measurement window before you start. National results arrive on a slower clock than local ones, so agree in advance what month three, six and twelve should look like and what would count as failure. An agency willing to define failure in writing is one that expects to succeed. Without that, every quarterly review becomes an argument about interpretation.
What a national engagement contains
Four workstreams, roughly in order of weight. Content is first and largest: a structured set of pages covering the problems your buyers search, from the comparison and alternative queries near the purchase decision back to the informational questions that precede it. Technical health is second, and it matters more at national scale because large sites accumulate duplicate URLs, thin pages and crawl waste that quietly cap performance. Google's own documentation on consolidating duplicate URLs describes the specific failure that costs the most.
Authority is third: earning references from places your audience already trusts, through work worth referencing rather than through purchased placements. Fourth is measurement, which at national scale means tracking by page and query cluster rather than by a headline traffic number, because a national site can grow traffic and lose revenue at the same time.
Why national costs more than local
Local SEO has a natural moat: proximity. Google will not show a plumber in another state to somebody searching nearby, which means the field you compete in is small by definition. National search has no such limit, so your competitors include every well-funded site in your category plus the aggregators and marketplaces that sit above them.
The practical consequence is volume of work. Where a local engagement may need a dozen good pages, a national one commonly needs many times that, plus the authority to get them seen, plus the technical discipline to keep a growing site clean. That is why serious national retainers start meaningfully higher than local ones, and why a national proposal priced like a local one is either much smaller than it appears or is planning to buy shortcuts.
The proposals to walk away from
Guaranteed rankings on competitive national terms, first and always. Nobody sells that. Next, any plan whose central mechanism is acquiring links at volume from sites that exist to sell links, which published spam policies treat as a violation and which puts your domain at risk for the sake of a quarter of movement. Third, enormous keyword lists presented as a strategy: a list is not a plan, and the number of tracked terms is unrelated to revenue.
The subtler one is the retainer with no production. If nobody in the proposal is writing pages, you are paying for recommendations you then have to resource internally. That can be the right purchase if you have a content team, but it should be a deliberate decision rather than something you discover in month four.
Questions people actually ask
- How is national SEO different from local SEO?
- Local SEO competes for a place in results shown only to nearby searchers, which makes the Google Business Profile and location signals the dominant work. National SEO has no proximity filter, so ranking depends on having genuinely useful pages plus enough authority to be shown ahead of established competitors. Different work, different timelines, different budgets.
- How long does national SEO take?
- Longer than most buyers hope. New pages on an established domain can settle within a quarter, but building visibility on a newer or weaker domain in a competitive category commonly takes three to four quarters before the trend is unmistakable. The honest early indicator is not traffic but coverage: whether the pages you built are appearing at all for the queries they were written for.
- Can we do national SEO without link building?
- In low-competition categories, sometimes. In contested ones, rarely, because your competitors have accumulated references you have not. The distinction that matters is between earning references through work worth citing and paying for placements, which violates published spam policies and carries risk that outlasts the agency relationship.
- Should we hire a specialist in our industry?
- For technical, regulated or highly specialised categories, usually yes, because the content is the hard part and subject knowledge cannot be improvised. For broader consumer categories a strong generalist with a real production capability often outperforms a nominal specialist. Judge on published work in something adjacent to your field rather than on the label.
