Local SEO prices, compared on what agencies publish
Local SEO is quoted three different ways and the three are not comparable. Some agencies publish a flat monthly retainer, some price per location, and some bill a one time cleanup of listings, citations and on page work separately from anything ongoing. A single storefront trying to appear in one city's map results is a different job from a five branch contractor who needs each location to show up in its own suburb, and a quote that does not say which job it was written for tells you almost nothing. This page sets out what sits inside a local retainer, which variables genuinely move the number, and how to force three quotes onto the same footing before you compare them.

How to get local SEO quotes you can actually compare
- Write the scope down before you ask anyone for a price. One page listing your locations, the services you want to be found for, the towns you serve and who currently owns the website and the listings. Send the identical page to every candidate. Quotes written against different assumptions are not quotes, they are guesses, and you will spend the comparison arguing about scope instead of value.
- Ask for the price per location and the minimum term. Multi location pricing is where identical headline numbers diverge fastest. Ask what the second and fifth location cost, whether the first is priced differently, and what the shortest term the agency will accept is. Ask in writing, because a number said on a call has a habit of changing shape by the time the contract arrives.
- Split the one time work out of the monthly number. Claiming and correcting listings, fixing inconsistent name, address and phone details, technical repairs and initial page writing are largely front loaded. If they are buried inside a flat retainer you cannot tell whether month seven buys anything at all. Ask for the cleanup as a separate line with a defined end, and for the ongoing retainer to say what recurs.
- Agree the definition of a result before the first invoice. Rankings, calls, form fills and booked jobs are four different things and agencies report whichever flatters them. Name the one that matters to you, confirm the tracking that will measure it, and confirm that you own the analytics property and the business listings rather than the agency. Ownership is free to agree on day one and expensive to recover later.
What actually moves a local SEO price
Four variables explain most of the spread. Location count is the largest: every extra branch adds its own listing, its own page, its own review stream and its own set of local competitors, so pricing that scales per location is usually more honest than a flat number that quietly assumes one. Competitive density is the second: the same scope costs more where a dozen well funded firms are already fighting over the same map results than it does in a market where nobody has done the work. The third is how much writing the engagement contains, because pages that are genuinely useful take a person time and pages that are not are worthless whatever they cost. The fourth is the starting condition of your site, since a fast, crawlable site with clean listings needs far less remediation than a template rebuilt three times by three different vendors.
What does not move the price, despite being sold hard, is tooling. Every serious agency runs the same handful of rank trackers and listing managers, and none of them is a differentiator. Google's own documentation is blunt that no one can guarantee ranking outcomes and that promises of a specific position are a warning sign, so treat a quote whose value rests on a guarantee as a quote about sales, not delivery. Ask instead who does the work, how many hours a month you get from that person, and what happens in month four when the obvious fixes are done.
Published prices, disclosed minimums, and the silence in between
Our index records what each agency states on its own website, with the date we checked it, rather than what a badge or a survey claims. The pattern in local search is consistent: providers selling to single location businesses publish a starting price far more often, because price is how they compete against national franchise pitches and against buyers who will otherwise do nothing at all. Providers selling multi location programmes tend to publish nothing and scope every engagement in a discovery call. Neither habit predicts quality, but the published side gives you something to compare and the unpublished side does not until you ask.
Read a published figure as a floor for the narrowest version of the work, never as a forecast. The useful companion question is the disclosed minimum: the smallest engagement and shortest term the agency will accept. That single question removes more unsuitable names from a shortlist than any other, takes one email to answer, and an agency that will not answer it in writing has told you something about how the rest of the relationship will run. Where a local package is being sold as a fixed bundle, ask which of its line items stop after the first quarter, because that is where the difference between a setup fee and a retainer usually hides.
Questions people actually ask
- Is a cheap local SEO retainer always a bad deal?
- Not always, but it constrains what can be delivered. A low monthly figure buys a small number of hours, and those hours go first to listings, reporting and admin. If your market is quiet and your site is healthy, that can be enough to hold visibility. If several funded competitors are actively working the same map results, a retainer that buys a few hours a month will not close the gap and paying it for a year is the expensive option.
- Should I pay a separate setup fee?
- Often yes, and a separate setup line is usually a sign of honest pricing rather than a surcharge. The first weeks contain listing claims, corrections, technical fixes and initial pages, which is real front loaded work. What matters is that the setup has a defined scope and an end date, and that the ongoing retainer describes what recurs after it.
- How many locations before per location pricing makes sense?
- Usually from the second. Each branch carries its own listing, its own page, its own reviews and its own competitors, so the work does not fold neatly into an existing retainer. Ask for the marginal cost of location two and location five. If an agency cannot answer, it has probably not run a multi location programme.
- Can an agency guarantee a map pack position?
- No. Rankings depend on factors including the searcher's proximity, and Google's documentation warns against providers who promise specific positions. A guarantee is either meaningless in practice or attached to terms narrow enough to be unfalsifiable. Ask for a written plan with named deliverables and a defined result measure instead.
