Digital marketing for manufacturing companies, bought well

Industrial marketing rewards precision and punishes volume thinking. Your buyer is an engineer or a procurement lead with a specification, the search terms behind that specification are technical and low volume, and the resulting enquiry can be worth more than a year of consumer traffic. Most agencies filter exactly those terms out of their research because the volume looks negligible. We compare agencies on published evidence of industrial work: named manufacturing clients, capability content you can read and judge, disclosed pricing, and ranking claims that survive checking. This page sets out the comparison method and what a competent industrial engagement should contain.

How we compare industrial marketing agencies

  1. Require named manufacturing clients. Industrial work is not interchangeable with consumer or ecommerce experience. We credit agencies that name manufacturers and describe the capability or process they marketed. A logo wall with no client, no process and no result is not evidence of industrial competence.
  2. Read the technical content they produced. A capability page is easy to grade: does it carry materials, tolerances, lot sizes, certifications and lead times, or adjectives about quality and commitment? Agencies that can write to an engineer show it on the page. Those that cannot are visible within a paragraph.
  3. Check whether the technical terms actually rank. Industrial terms are thinly contested, so a competent agency should be able to point at capability queries where a client now appears. We search the term and look. Claims that name neither client nor query are copywriting rather than evidence.
  4. Confirm they measure quotes, not clicks. In a sector with long sales cycles, the useful metrics are qualified requests for quote, quote value and target accounts appearing in traffic. An agency reporting sessions and impressions to a manufacturer has not understood what it is being paid to move.

What an industrial engagement should contain

Capability pages come first: one per process, material, certification and industry served, each carrying the specifications a buyer screens on. Dimensional ranges, materials handled, tolerances achieved, lot sizes, certifications, typical lead times. These are the pages that rank for the terms your buyers actually type, and they are the ones most manufacturer sites do not have, because the site was built to describe the company rather than the capability.

Technical resources come second: spec sheets, tolerance tables, material selection guides, design notes. Engineers search for these, download them, and forward them internally to the people who approve the purchase. They are also the only content in this sector that reliably earns links, because other technical sites reference useful reference material. Third comes the foundation: a fast site, product data present in HTML rather than trapped in a PDF or a script-driven catalogue, and clean information architecture so the capability pages can be found. Fourth is measurement wired to the quoting process rather than to form submissions.

Why low search volume is the opportunity, not the objection

A term with a few hundred monthly searches that reaches engineers specifying your exact process may represent the entire addressable demand for that capability, and one won programme can justify the whole marketing budget for a year. Because generalist agencies screen those terms out on volume, competition for them is thin, and a well built capability page can rank in a quarter or two rather than the years a consumer term would take.

The corollary is that broad terms are usually the wrong target. Ranking for a generic category phrase brings students, competitors and tyre-kickers. Ranking for the process plus the material plus the tolerance brings a person with a drawing. Ask any agency how they select terms, and if the answer starts with a volume threshold, they are about to discard your best opportunities.

Measuring work whose payoff is slower than the contract

When a deal takes a year to close, closed revenue cannot grade a twelve month engagement. Agree leading indicators at the start and hold the agency to them: qualified requests for quote, quote value by capability, spec sheet downloads by target industry, and rankings for capability terms that previously returned nothing. Then connect the website analytics to your quoting or customer system well enough that a quote can be traced to its origin.

Manufacturers who skip this end up in an unwinnable argument eighteen months later, with a sales team crediting relationships, an agency crediting search, and no data to settle it. The instrumentation is a week of work at the start and it is the difference between renewing on evidence and renewing on faith.

Questions people actually ask

Our products are custom. Can search marketing work at all?
Yes, and custom work is often easier to market than commodity work, because the searches are specific. People search the process, the material and the constraint rather than a product name. Build pages around what you can make and to what tolerance, and the enquiries that arrive will already match your capability.
Should we advertise or invest in organic?
Industrial terms are cheap in paid search relative to their value, so a small paid budget on capability terms is often worth running while organic pages are built. Keep the budgets and the reporting separate, and insist the agency fee is invoiced apart from media spend so you can see what each is buying.
How do we avoid conflict with our distributors and reps?
Decide the routing rule before the first campaign: enquiries by territory to the relevant partner, or direct with partner notification. Brief the agency explicitly, because agencies from consumer backgrounds will not think to ask, and discovering the problem through an angry distributor call is an expensive way to set policy.
What does a reasonable first quarter look like?
A technical audit with fixes applied, a capability page plan naming the query each page targets, the first capability pages live with real specifications on them, and measurement wired from the website to your quoting process. If the quarter produces a strategy deck and a persona document, the engagement is already behind.
