Content marketing for manufacturing companies, on evidence

Manufacturing is one of the few categories where content marketing has an obvious, concrete job: engineers and procurement teams research specifications long before they contact a supplier, and the supplier whose documentation answers the question is the one that gets shortlisted. It is also one of the hardest categories to staff, because the writing requires someone who can hold a technical conversation with an application engineer without turning it into marketing copy. That combination, high intent and scarce writing talent, is what sets the price. This page covers how the work is scoped, what it should produce, and how to compare the companies that sell it.

How to scope a manufacturing content programme

  1. Start with the specification questions, not the blog. The highest value pages in manufacturing are usually application notes, material and tolerance comparisons, sizing guides and honest answers about what a process cannot do. Ask your sales engineers which questions delay a quote, and build those first.
  2. Test whether the writer can interview an engineer. Ask for a paid pilot in which the company interviews one of your technical staff and produces a single piece. Nothing else predicts the outcome as reliably, and it costs a fraction of a quarter spent discovering that the writer works from your existing brochure.
  3. Decide who owns technical review, and how fast. Manufacturing content dies in review queues. Name the reviewer, agree a turnaround in working days and put it in the schedule, because an unreviewed backlog looks identical to an agency that stopped delivering and costs the same either way.
  4. Plan for the long sales cycle in the reporting. Industrial buying cycles run for months and involve several people, so a programme judged on enquiries in month two will be cancelled before its first real signal. Agree leading indicators up front: coverage of specification queries, impressions on new terms, and the quality of the enquiries that arrive.

Why this content costs more

Three reasons, and they compound. The writer must be technical enough to be trusted by the reader, which narrows the pool sharply and raises the rate. The review cycle is longer because the content makes claims about performance, tolerance and compliance that a marketing team cannot sign off alone. And the useful formats are heavier than an article: diagrams, tables, downloadable specifications and calculators all cost more to produce than prose does.

Against that, the audience is small and valuable, so the volume required is low. A manufacturer with a well-chosen set of specification pages usually needs far fewer pieces than a consumer brand does. Buyers who benchmark manufacturing content against a consumer content rate card are comparing a different product at a different volume and will conclude, wrongly, that they are being overcharged.

What good looks like, and what to avoid

Good manufacturing content is specific enough to be wrong. It names materials, ranges, tolerances and limits, it says what the process is unsuitable for, and it is signed by someone with a title an engineer recognises. That specificity is also what makes it defensible in search: Google's guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content asks whether the content demonstrates first-hand expertise and depth of knowledge, and a page written from a datasheet by someone who has never seen the machine does not.

What to avoid is volume for its own sake. Google's spam policies name scaled content abuse, meaning many pages produced without adding value for users, and a manufacturing site padded with generic industry posts is spending budget on pages no procurement engineer will ever read. Fewer, deeper, reviewed pieces is both the cheaper and the stronger position.

Questions people actually ask

What does manufacturing content marketing cost per month?
It sits above general content pricing because of writer scarcity, technical review and heavier formats, though at lower volume. The index shows the median monthly retainer across verified agencies that publish a price, each figure linked to the page and date it was read from.
How many pieces a month does a manufacturer need?
Usually fewer than a proposal suggests. A small set of thoroughly answered specification and application questions outperforms a high-volume blog calendar, because the audience is narrow and reads carefully. Start with the questions that delay quotes.
Should our engineers write the content themselves?
They should be interviewed and should review, but rarely write. The scarce resource is engineering time, and the durable arrangement is a writer who can extract the substance in an hour and a reviewer who corrects rather than drafts.
How long before industrial content produces enquiries?
Longer than most categories, because the buying cycle itself is long and the content has to be found, read and remembered before a quote request appears. Agree leading indicators such as query coverage and enquiry quality so the programme can be judged before revenue arrives.
