National SEO service, priced on published evidence

A national SEO service is not local SEO with a bigger budget. It is a different competitive problem: instead of winning a map pack against a handful of nearby businesses, you are competing for the same organic results as every well funded publisher, marketplace and brand in your category, in a market where nobody gets a proximity advantage. That changes what the work is, how long it takes and what a sensible proposal looks like. This page sets out what national scope actually buys, why the quotes vary so much, and the questions that expose a local package being sold with a national label.

How to buy a national SEO service

  1. Check the target list before the price. Ask for the specific queries the engagement will pursue and the current ranking of the sites already holding them. National terms are usually held by established domains, and a proposal that will not name its targets is protecting itself from being measured later.
  2. Separate content production from optimisation. National programmes live or die on published pages, and writing them is the expensive line. Establish how many pages a month the retainer produces, who writes them, who reviews them for accuracy, and whether the price assumes you supply subject matter experts.
  3. Ask how authority will be earned. Google's spam policies prohibit buying or selling links for ranking purposes and warn that sites in breach may rank lower or drop out of results. A credible national plan describes digital PR, original research or partnerships, not a monthly link quota with no source named.
  4. Set the review horizon honestly. Google's own starter guide notes that some changes take effect in hours while others take several months. Agree at signing which leading indicators, such as indexed pages, impressions and non brand clicks, will be read at ninety days, and which outcomes are fair only later.

Why national quotes vary so widely

The single biggest variable is content volume. A national programme aiming at a broad category needs a library, and a retainer that funds four substantial pages a month is a different product from one funding twenty, even where both are labelled national SEO. The second variable is technical debt: a large site with faceted navigation, duplicated templates or a migration in its past absorbs specialist engineering time before any new page can rank, and that work is usually invisible in a headline price.

The third variable is who does the work. Agencies that publish their prices skew toward standardised packages sold to smaller businesses, while national programmes for competitive categories are typically scoped individually, which is exactly why so few of those prices appear in public. When you compare a published floor against a bespoke quote, you are comparing an entry point with a plan.

How to tell national scope from a local package

Local work has fingerprints. If the proposal centres on a business profile, citation building, review generation and city landing pages, it is a local package regardless of the title on the cover. National work reads differently: query research across a whole category, information architecture, internal linking at scale, content production capacity, and a plan for earning citations from sources with existing authority.

The reporting gives it away too. Local reporting leans on map pack positions and calls; national reporting leans on share of the non brand queries in a category, impressions across a keyword set, and revenue attributed to organic entry pages. Ask to see a sample report from an existing national client before you sign, with the client's identity redacted if necessary.

Questions people actually ask

How long does a national SEO campaign take to work?
Longer than local, because there is no proximity signal to win on and the incumbents are usually established domains. Google's guidance says changes range from hours to several months to take effect. Plan on reading leading indicators in the first quarter and judging revenue outcomes over a longer horizon.
Can I do national SEO without producing content?
Rarely. Technical fixes can release traffic a site had already earned, and that can look like fast progress, but sustaining national visibility means owning answers to queries you do not currently have pages for. If a proposal contains no content line, ask what it expects to rank.
Is national SEO worth it for a small business?
It depends on whether your customers are geographically bound. A business that ships or serves remotely can justify it. A business that serves people who must physically arrive usually gets more from local visibility first, then expands nationally once the local surface is fully captured.
Should a national retainer include paid search too?
Bundling can help, because paid data reveals which queries convert before organic reaches them. Just insist the invoice separates media spend from agency fee, so you can read what the management costs and move it if performance drifts.
