Choosing a manufacturing website design company

A manufacturing website has a different job from a consumer one. Its visitors are engineers, buyers and distributors looking for a specific capability, tolerance, material or part number, and they arrive already technical. The site that wins the enquiry is usually the one that made the specification easy to find and the quote easy to request, not the one with the better hero video. This index lists firms that build manufacturing and industrial sites on what they publish about themselves: printed pricing where it exists, disclosed project minimums, stated platforms and named client work a buyer can open and inspect.

How to vet a manufacturing website design company

  1. Ask to see an industrial site they built. Not a portfolio thumbnail: a live URL you can open, search and use. Try to find a specific capability or spec on it in under a minute. If you cannot, the agency has built a brochure for a business whose buyers came looking for data, and the same thing will happen to your site.
  2. Establish who handles the product data. Ask who structures the catalogue: part hierarchies, specification tables, CAD downloads, material and finish options. This is where industrial projects overrun, because the data usually lives in an ERP export or a stack of PDFs nobody has ever normalised. Get the owner of that work named in the scope.
  3. Pin down the quote and enquiry path. Most manufacturing sites convert through a request for quote rather than a purchase. Ask how the RFQ form is built, what fields it captures, where submissions land, and whether uploads such as drawings are supported. A quote path that emails an unmonitored inbox is the most common silent failure in this category.
  4. Settle ownership, hosting and handover. Confirm the code, the content management system and the domain end up in accounts your company controls, and ask what happens if you stop paying the monthly fee. Some firms build on proprietary platforms you can never leave, which is a pricing decision disguised as a technology decision.

What actually sets the price

Scope, not design, drives the number. A ten-page site presenting a single capability is a modest project in any market. A site with a searchable catalogue of thousands of parts, filterable specifications, downloadable CAD files and an ERP or PIM integration is a software project that happens to have a homepage, and it is priced accordingly. Ask any two quotes to state the page count, the number of catalogue items, and every system the site must talk to, and most of the gap between them will explain itself immediately.

The second driver is content. Manufacturers frequently have the knowledge and none of the pages, so a quote that assumes the client supplies finished copy for forty capability pages is quietly deferring the largest task in the project. Ask whether writing is included, who does it, and whether they have interviewed engineers before. Accessibility is a third factor worth naming in scope: the Department of Justice's guidance on web accessibility and the ADA describes how businesses open to the public should make web content accessible, and retrofitting that after launch always costs more than building it in.

Where industrial web projects go wrong

The most common failure is the redesign that loses traffic. Manufacturing sites often carry a long tail of old part pages and technical PDFs that quietly bring in qualified visitors, and a rebuild that changes every URL without redirects destroys that overnight. Ask any candidate how they handle URL mapping and redirects during a migration, and ask for the migration plan from a previous project. A firm that has never lost a site's traffic will have a clear answer ready.

The second failure is speed. Industrial buyers browse from plant floors and job sites on mediocre connections, and heavy image galleries and unoptimised CAD previews punish that. The third is the dead enquiry: forms that break silently, notifications routed to someone who left, and no test in place to notice. Ask whether the agency monitors form delivery after launch, and treat that answer as a proxy for how they think about the whole engagement.

Questions people actually ask

Do we need a full parts catalogue on the website?
Only if buyers search for parts. If the enquiry starts with a capability or a material, a strong capability section and a good RFQ path will do more than a catalogue nobody maintains. Build the catalogue when the data already exists in a usable form and someone owns keeping it current.
Should the site have ecommerce or just quoting?
Follow the sales process rather than the trend. Businesses with configured, negotiated or freight-heavy orders usually keep quoting. Businesses with standard catalogue items and repeat buyers often benefit from a customer portal with pricing, which is a different and larger project than a storefront.
How long does a manufacturing website take?
Ask for a schedule tied to deliverables rather than a single date, and ask what the agency needs from you and when. Industrial projects rarely stall on design. They stall waiting on product data, engineering review and photography, and a schedule that does not name those dependencies is not a schedule.
What should we keep from the old site?
The URLs that already earn traffic and enquiries, the technical documents buyers download, and any part or spec pages that rank. Pull a list before the project starts, agree in writing which are preserved or redirected, and check them the week after launch.
