Social media management services, compared on evidence
Social media management services cover a wide range of very different jobs: publishing a content calendar, running paid social, handling community replies, producing video, or all four under one retainer. Because the label is loose, two quotes for the same brief can differ by a factor of several without either being dishonest. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so you can compare channel focus, printed pricing and verifiable client work before you sit through a pitch.

How to buy social media management
- Name the job the channel has to do. Awareness, community support, recruitment and direct response are four different mandates with four different content patterns. Write down which one you are funding, because it determines both the shortlist and how success will be measured.
- Pick the channels before the agency. An agency strong on short form video is rarely the same one that is strong at business networking content or at paid social buying. Choose two channels you will actually commit to and let that filter the list.
- Separate production from management. Scheduling and replying is cheap. Original photography, video and design is not. Ask each candidate to price production separately from management so you can see which half of the retainer you are actually funding.
- Verify the agency against its own accounts and pages. Named team, real address, printed pricing where it exists, and live client accounts you can open and scroll. Agencies are listed here only on what can be verified from their own published pages, and their own feeds are the easiest evidence of all.
What a retainer usually includes, and what it usually does not
A typical management retainer covers strategy, a content calendar, a set number of posts per channel per month, scheduling, basic community management during business hours, and a monthly report. What is commonly excluded: original video shoots, paid media budget, influencer fees, out of hours crisis response, and design work beyond templated assets.
The exclusions are where disputes start. Get the post count, the channels, the response window and the production allowance written into the scope. If a candidate will not commit to numbers at proposal stage, the monthly deliverable will be whatever is left after their busier clients are served.
Endorsements, reviews and paid partnerships
Anything an agency posts on your behalf that features a paid creator, an incentivised customer or an employee carries disclosure obligations. The Federal Trade Commission's endorsement guidance says endorsements must reflect the honest opinions or experiences of the endorser, that material connections such as payment, free product or affiliate commission must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, and that an employee listing their employer on a profile page is not enough because readers of an individual post will not see it.
The same guidance warns against conditioning incentives on positive reviews and against delaying only negative reviews, which creates a biased picture. Ask a prospective agency how it briefs creators, how it words disclosures and who approves them. An agency that treats disclosure as an afterthought is creating a liability that lands on your brand, not theirs.
Measuring the work honestly
Follower counts and impressions are the easiest numbers to move and the least connected to money. Better measures are the ones tied to the mandate you funded: saved and shared posts for awareness, response time and resolution rate for community work, and tracked clicks through to enquiries or sales for direct response.
Ask for a report that names what was published, what was expected and what happened, with the comparison period stated. Then ask the agency what it would stop doing if the numbers stayed flat for a quarter. The answer tells you whether there is a strategy underneath the calendar.
Questions people actually ask
- What do social media management services normally include?
- Strategy, a content calendar, an agreed number of posts per channel, scheduling, business hours community management and monthly reporting. Original video, design beyond templates, paid media budget and influencer fees are usually charged separately.
- Should the same agency run organic and paid social?
- It helps when the creative is shared, because the best organic posts are the cheapest paid tests. It is not required. If one channel dominates your plan, hire the specialist for that channel and let it lead.
- Who has to disclose a paid partnership?
- The endorser does, clearly and conspicuously, whenever there is a material connection such as payment, free product or an affiliate commission. Federal Trade Commission guidance also says an employer named only on a profile page is not sufficient disclosure for an individual post.
- How should we measure the retainer?
- Against the mandate you funded. Awareness, community support and direct response each need different measures, and follower counts are the weakest of them. Agree the measures and the comparison period before the first month.
