SEO companies for lawyers, compared on evidence

Choosing between SEO companies for lawyers is mostly a contracting problem, not a technical one. The pitches converge quickly: content, links, local presence, reporting. What differs is the length of the lock-in, who owns the site when it ends, what counts as a lead on the monthly report, and whether anyone in the building has read your state's advertising rules. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, and the process below is the one to run once you have three names in front of you.

How to run the shortlist

  1. Ask for the compliance step in writing. Who checks that a page, a testimonial or a directory placement is permitted under your state's professional conduct rules, and at what point in the workflow. If no one owns that step, the firm owns it by default.
  2. Define a lead before you see a report. A tracked phone call is not a matter and a form fill is not a client. Agree what the monthly report counts, who qualifies it, and how disqualified enquiries appear, before the first invoice rather than after the third.
  3. Read the term and the exit together. A twelve-month term is defensible; a twelve-month term with agency-owned hosting, agency-owned content and no export clause is a hostage arrangement. Ask for the exit paragraph and read it before the pricing page.
  4. Interview the person doing the work. The partner who pitches is rarely the writer or the account manager. Ask to meet whoever will actually publish your practice-area pages, and ask them what they know about your area of law.
  5. Check the company's own search footprint. A company selling legal search visibility that cannot be found for its own specialty phrase is asking you to take its method on faith. It is not proof, but it is a cheap and revealing check.

The ethics questions a generalist will not ask

A firm's website is a communication about a lawyer's services and state conduct rules reach it. Rules modelled on Rule 7.2, such as North Carolina's adopted version, permit paying the reasonable costs of advertising but prohibit compensating, giving or promising anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services, and require any communication made under the rule to include the name and contact information of at least one lawyer or law firm responsible for its content. Those two sentences already decide how several common SEO tactics may be used.

That is why the compliance step belongs in the workflow rather than in the introduction. Review solicitation, paid directory placements, referral arrangements dressed as marketing fees and specialisation language all need checking against the rule your bar actually adopted. Rules vary by state, the details differ meaningfully, and nothing on this page is legal advice; your state bar's version controls.

Contract terms that decide the outcome

Ownership first. The domain, hosting account, content, analytics, Search Console property and any call-tracking numbers should be in the firm's name from day one, with the company granted access. Firms that discover during a dispute that the agency holds the domain lose the entire investment, and it is a paragraph, not a negotiation, to prevent.

Then the reporting definition. Insist that the monthly report is legible to a partner who has never opened Search Console: pages published, queries the firm now appears for, enquiries received, and what happened to them. Finally, put a review point in the term. Google's guidance notes some changes take effect in hours and others take several months, so a fair contract gives the work runway and gives the firm a defined date to judge it.

Claims to price sceptically

Google's hiring guidance says to be wary of companies that email out of the blue, will not clearly explain what they intend to do, or promote link popularity schemes, and it states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. It also warns against anyone alleging a special relationship with Google. Those are the plainest filters available and they are published by the company that runs the results.

Case studies deserve the same treatment. Ask for a named firm, a named market and a date, and for permission to call the client. A company with a real record can produce one within a day; a company selling a template will offer an anonymised chart instead.

Questions people actually ask

How long should a law firm SEO contract run?
Long enough for the work to be judged fairly and short enough to leave. Six to twelve months with a defined review point is common; the term matters far less than whether the firm owns its site, content and accounts throughout.
Do attorney advertising rules apply to SEO work?
Yes. A firm website is a communication about a lawyer's services, and rules modelled on Rule 7.2 restrict paying for recommendations and require a responsible lawyer's name and contact details on the communication. Rules vary by state; check your own bar's version and take legal advice, not marketing advice.
What should the monthly report contain?
Pages published, target queries with position and impression movement, enquiries received by practice area, and the outcome of those enquiries. Traffic totals without enquiry outcomes describe activity rather than results.
Is it safe to buy legal directory placements?
It depends on the arrangement and on your state's rule. Paying the reasonable cost of advertising is generally permitted, while giving something of value for a recommendation generally is not. Have the specific arrangement checked against your bar's adopted rule.
Should the agency host my website?
Preferably not. Keep the domain and hosting in the firm's name and grant access instead. It costs nothing while the relationship is good and protects the whole investment if it ends badly.
