Attorney PPC services: hiring for the most expensive clicks in advertising

Pay-per-click for law firms is the deep end of search advertising. Clicks on competitive legal terms routinely price in the tens of dollars and the most contested injury terms cost multiples of that, because a single signed case can repay a month of ad spend on its own. At those prices, management quality is not a nicety: a vendor who leaks a fifth of your budget to irrelevant search terms is destroying money at a rate few other industries can match. Attorney PPC services exist to manage that risk, and this page explains what they cost, what the competent ones actually do, and the evidence to demand before you connect a card to an ad account.

How to vet an attorney PPC vendor

  1. Verify legal-specific experience, not just Ads experience. Legal PPC has its own terrain: bar advertising rules that reach ad copy, Google's policies for legal services, local service ads with their own screening process, and intake economics that decide what a lead is worth. Ask for accounts they have run in your practice area and what cost per signed case, not cost per click, they achieved.
  2. Insist on owning your account and your data. The ad account, its conversion history and your negative keyword lists are assets your firm pays to build. They must live in an account your firm owns, with the agency as an invited manager. Walk away from any vendor who runs your ads inside their own account, whatever the stated reason.
  3. Audit the tracking plan before launch. In legal, most valuable conversions are phone calls and consult requests, not form fills. The vendor's plan must include call tracking that distinguishes new potential clients from existing ones and wrong numbers, and ideally imports which callers became signed cases, so the account optimizes toward cases rather than dials.
  4. Get fee and spend fully separated. Legal PPC budgets are large enough that a percentage-of-spend fee creates a real incentive to recommend higher budgets. Whichever fee model you accept, require the management fee and the media spend on separate lines, and require that budget increases be justified by cost-per-case data you can inspect.

Why legal clicks cost what they cost, and what that means for management

The auction prices clicks against the value of the client behind them. Contingency practice areas where one case can generate five or six figures in fees, injury, mass tort, some criminal defense, attract the most bidders and the highest prices, while lower-value or flat-fee practice areas price far lower. This has a direct consequence for hiring: the higher your click prices, the more each percentage point of wasted spend costs, and the more a skilled manager is worth relative to their fee. It also means small experiments are expensive; a legal account needs a manager who structures tests deliberately rather than spraying budget to see what happens.

Management fees follow the stakes. Legal PPC retainers commonly start in the low thousands of dollars monthly and scale with budget and complexity. That is real money, and the correct comparison is not against a cheaper generalist but against the cost of the mistakes a generalist makes in this niche: ads that create bar complaints, budgets bleeding into searches for free legal help, and call tracking that cannot tell a new client from a solicitor.

What a competent legal PPC engagement produces

Week to week, the visible work is unglamorous: search term reports reviewed and mined for negatives, ad copy tested within advertising rules, bids and budgets shifted toward the campaigns producing signed cases, landing pages iterated so that a person in crisis can call with one tap. Monthly, the reporting should walk from spend to clicks to calls to qualified consults to signed cases, with cost at each stage. Google's own Quality Score documentation describes how relevance and landing page experience shape what you pay per click; a vendor's job is to make those factors work in your favor, and their reporting should show the price you pay per click trending down for the same terms over time, not just the volume of clicks trending up.

PPC alone, or PPC alongside the rest?

Paid search produces cases while it runs and stops the day you stop paying. That makes it the fastest lever for a new firm or a new practice area, and an expensive permanent dependency if it remains the only channel. The firms that get the best economics typically run PPC for immediate volume while building the organic and local presence that compounds, then let the paid budget concentrate on the terms organic cannot win. Vendors have incentives here too: a PPC-only shop will rarely recommend shifting budget to channels it does not sell. When you evaluate attorney PPC services, ask how they would know when to spend less, and prefer the vendor whose answer involves your cost per signed case rather than their retainer.

Questions people actually ask

What budget does a law firm need for PPC to work?
Enough to buy meaningful click volume in your practice area and metro. With clicks priced in the tens of dollars, a budget of a few thousand dollars monthly is a realistic floor in most competitive areas; far below that, the account cannot gather enough data to optimize and the spend produces noise. Lower-cost practice areas and smaller markets need less.
Are Google Local Services Ads better than regular PPC for lawyers?
They are complementary. Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click, sit above regular ads, and require passing Google's screening, which suits many consumer practice areas well. Traditional search ads offer far more control over targeting and messaging. Firms with the budget usually run both and compare cost per signed case.
How do I know if my current PPC vendor is wasting money?
Pull the search terms report yourself, or ask for it; you are entitled to it. Look for spend on searches seeking free help, jobs, other jurisdictions or other practice areas. Then check whether calls are tracked and qualified. A vendor who cannot show which spend produced signed cases cannot be managing toward them.
Can PPC vendors guarantee a number of cases?
No honest one will. Case volume depends on the auction, your intake speed and your market, none fully in the vendor's control. What they can commit to is process: tracked calls, mined search terms, tested ads and transparent cost-per-case reporting. Treat guarantees as a red flag, not a reassurance.
