Choosing a Texas SEO Company
Texas is not one search market. Houston, Dallas Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio each have their own competitive set, their own local press and their own price expectations, and a business selling statewide is really competing in four or five metros at once plus a long tail of smaller cities. That geography is the first thing any serious proposal should address, and the first thing a weak one glosses over. This page sets out what a Texas retainer actually covers, what makes one quote several times another, and the checks you can run on a candidate using nothing but public evidence.

How to compare Texas SEO companies
- Make them name the metros and the terms. Ask which cities and which specific queries the plan targets, and why those rather than the obvious ones. A statewide plan that does not distinguish Houston from Austin is a template. The answer should include who currently ranks in each market, because that is the only way to judge whether the plan is achievable.
- Verify named clients in your own metro. Ask for three current Texas clients, then search the terms those businesses should own and read their pages. You are checking whether work shipped and held, not whether the case study reads well. Ask the references specifically what happened in the first three months of the engagement.
- Get a disclosed minimum and the hour split. Ask for the monthly minimum in writing and a breakdown of where hours go across technical work, content, local profile management and authority building. A company that publishes rate cards is easier to hold to a scope, and an undisclosed allocation is where a retainer quietly becomes a reporting subscription.
- Separate the fee from the media spend. If advertising is part of the plan, keep management fees and media budget on separate invoices with the ad account in your own name. Blended lines hide how much of your money reaches an auction and make it impossible to judge whether the fee is proportionate to the work performed.
What drives the price in Texas
Three inputs explain most of the spread. Footprint is first: one location in one metro is a fundamentally smaller job than a dozen across the state, because each needs a genuine location page, its own Google Business Profile, its own local relevance and its own review flow. Google's local ranking guidance describes relevance, distance and prominence as the drivers, and distance is the one no amount of content overcomes, which is why serving Dallas from a Houston address does not work.
Category competition is second. Legal, energy services, medical, home services and anything tied to construction in Texas are contested by incumbents who have been publishing for years and buying advertising alongside it. Content volume is third and it is the input most often left vague in proposals, so get a committed number of pages per month in writing. When two quotes differ wildly, it is almost always footprint and content volume, not method.
Statewide, metro, or both
Decide before you buy whether you are trying to rank in specific cities or to be found statewide for a service that is delivered remotely. They are different builds. Local visibility is won with profiles, location pages and proximity, and it is measured in calls from a map result. Statewide or national visibility is won with depth of content and earned authority, and it is measured in form fills over a longer horizon. Companies that need both should fund them as two lines rather than hoping one budget covers the pair.
If you operate in several metros, resist the temptation to spin up thin location pages for every city in the state. Pages about places you do not serve, staffed by nobody, with no local detail, are the fastest route to a site that looks manufactured. A smaller set of genuine location pages, each tied to a real address or a real service area and real work performed there, outperforms a hundred templated ones and does not put the rest of the site at risk.
Reporting that tells you the truth
Insist that the monthly report leads with calls, forms and closed work traced to pages and profiles, with rankings and traffic underneath as supporting detail. Ask for the report to list what was published and what was planned but not published, because a visible gap between the two is the earliest warning that a retainer has drifted into maintenance. Conversion tracking should be configured in your own accounts, and Google's documentation on the different ways to track conversions is a reasonable brief to hand a candidate.
Set a review point at ninety days with agreed criteria written down before the work starts. In competitive Texas categories ninety days is too early to judge outcomes, but it is exactly the right moment to judge whether the promised work is being done. Separating those two questions is what stops a good engagement being cancelled early and a bad one running for a year.
Questions people actually ask
- Do we need a company based in Texas?
- No, though it helps for on-site work, photography and the relationships that earn genuine local links. What matters far more is verifiable work in your category and in metros like yours. A remote provider with named Texas clients you can check beats a local one that will not name any.
- Can one retainer cover Houston, Dallas and Austin?
- It can, but price it as three markets rather than one. Each needs its own location page, profile, review flow and competitive analysis. A single budget stretched across three metros usually produces adequate visibility in none of them, so it is better to sequence the metros than to dilute the work.
- How long until we see results?
- Technical and profile work can move local visibility within weeks. New content typically needs a quarter to establish and two or three in competitive categories. Judge early months on shipped work against the plan, and on leading indicators such as impressions and call volume, rather than on a single ranking position.
- What should disqualify a candidate immediately?
- Guaranteed rankings, undisclosed link buying, refusal to name a single client, hosting your website or Business Profile in their own account, and a proposal that does not distinguish between the metros you actually serve. Any one of these tells you what the next twelve months would look like.
