The best advertising for plumbers, ranked by intent

Plumbing is one of the few trades where advertising can be judged almost in real time, because the phone either rings or it does not. That makes it easier to evaluate than most categories and also easier to waste money in, since a channel that fails is failing while you watch. The useful way to rank the options is by intent: how close the person seeing your advertisement is to needing a plumber right now. Emergency work sits at one end and brand awareness at the other, and most plumbing businesses need a mix weighted heavily toward the first. This page sets out that ranking, what each channel realistically costs to run, and how the agencies in our index price the work.

How to build a plumbing advertising plan that pays

  1. Fix the Google Business Profile before spending anything. For emergency plumbing the map pack is where the calls are. Complete categories, service areas, hours, photos and a steady flow of genuine reviews do more for a local plumber than the first several months of any paid campaign, and the profile costs nothing but attention to maintain properly.
  2. Buy the highest intent search terms first. Emergency plumber, burst pipe, water heater repair and your city name are expensive per click and cheap per job, because the person typing them is calling somebody within the hour. Start there, cap the geography tightly to the areas you will actually drive to, and expand only once those terms are saturated.
  3. Track calls properly or the whole plan is guesswork. Most plumbing enquiries arrive as phone calls, so a plan measured on form submissions is measuring the minority. Use call tracking numbers per channel, record call length, and agree that a qualified call over a set duration counts as a lead. Without it you cannot tell which advertisement paid for itself.
  4. Add lower intent channels only after the phones are covered. Local service pages, review generation, direct mail in target neighbourhoods, van livery and social advertising all contribute, but they work best as a layer on top of high intent search rather than a substitute for it. Set a fixed test budget and a fixed period, and judge each against tracked calls.

Ranking the channels by how close they are to a job

Google's local service listings and the map pack come first for emergency demand, because they appear at the moment of need and carry proximity and review signals that a paid advertisement cannot buy. Paid search comes next, dominating the same queries but at a real cost per click in plumbing, which is one of the more expensive local categories in the auction. Organic service pages sit behind those two: slower to arrive, but they cost nothing per call once they rank and they carry the planned work such as bathroom installations and system replacements, which are worth more per job than a leaking tap. Review platforms and directories can produce steady volume, though they resell the same enquiry to several trades, so treat those leads as contested rather than yours.

At the far end sit awareness channels: social advertising, local sponsorship, vehicle livery and mail. They rarely produce a call today, and they are not worthless, because plumbing purchases have a recall element and a familiar name wins a coin toss. The mistake is buying them before the intent channels are properly covered. If your emergency search campaign is capped by budget at midday, no amount of brand advertising is a better use of the next dollar.

What agencies charge, and what you should keep in house

Our index records what each provider publishes on its own site, with the date we checked. Home services is one of the categories where published pricing is most common, because these agencies compete against constant cold outreach and price is a way of standing out. Read those numbers as a floor for the narrowest scope, usually campaign management on one channel for one location, with media spend on top and no content production included. A multi location plumbing group with several service lines is a different quote entirely.

Some of this work is genuinely better kept in house. Asking every satisfied customer for a review, keeping the business profile current, and answering the phone quickly are the three highest return activities in plumbing marketing and none of them need an agency. What agencies add is disciplined paid media, service page content at volume, and the tracking that tells you which of your channels actually produced the week's jobs. Buy those, and keep the customer facing habits close to the people doing the work. Note also that any advertising claim, including guarantees and pricing promises, has to be truthful and substantiated under the Federal Trade Commission's advertising guidance, whoever writes it.

Questions people actually ask

What is the single highest return channel for a plumber?
A complete, actively maintained Google Business Profile with a steady stream of genuine reviews, because it appears at the moment of emergency need and costs nothing per call. Paid search on emergency terms is second, and it is where most of a first advertising budget should go.
Are paid lead platforms worth it?
They can fill a diary quickly, which matters for a new business, but the same enquiry is usually sold to several trades so you are quoting against competitors from the first second. Track cost per won job rather than cost per lead, and treat them as a supplement rather than a foundation.
How much should a plumbing business spend?
Work backwards from job value and close rate rather than from a percentage rule. Establish what a booked job is worth, what share of tracked calls you convert, and how many jobs you can actually service this month. Spending beyond your capacity to answer the phone wastes the whole budget.
Do I need a new website first?
Usually not a new one, but the existing one needs a phone number visible without scrolling, fast loading on a mobile connection, clear service areas and a page for each main service. Those fixes are cheap and they raise the return on every channel you subsequently buy.
