AI search optimization services, bought on evidence
AI search optimization is the newest label in the agency market, and it is being applied to work that ranges from genuinely useful to purely nominal. Google has published what it takes for a page to appear in its AI features, and the requirement is narrower than most pitches suggest, which makes this a category where reading the documentation before the proposal saves real money. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves: method, specialisation, pricing when they print it, and proof that can be verified from their own pages rather than accepted on a call.

How to buy AI search optimization
- Start from the published eligibility rule. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimizations necessary; a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Any proposal should begin by proving your pages clear that bar.
- Separate the technical pass from the content work. Indexing, snippet eligibility and crawl access are finite engineering tasks with a checkable end state. Writing content worth quoting is continuous. Price them separately or you will never know when the setup finished and what the retainer is actually buying.
- Refuse to pay for files Google says are not required. Google says you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. Accurate structured data still earns its place for existing reasons, but an AI-specific file sold as a requirement is not one.
- Ask how citation will be measured. A provider should be able to describe its measurement method, the sample of queries it tracks and how it separates a citation from a coincidence, without hiding behind a proprietary score. If the answer is a dashboard logo, you are buying a dashboard.
- Verify the agency from its own pages. Published address, named team, printed prices and case detail specific enough to be checked. Agencies appear in this index only on what can be verified from their own published pages; apply the same test to anyone you shortlist elsewhere.
What the work legitimately involves
Once eligibility is settled, the remaining work is real and it is mostly editorial. Pages have to answer the question directly and early, because a system assembling an answer lifts a passage rather than reading a page in order. Claims need attribution a reader can follow, since content that cites its own sources is easier to quote responsibly. Structure has to be clean: headings that map to real questions, tables that hold comparable facts, and structured data where a type genuinely applies.
Depth across a topic matters more than a single page aimed at a single phrase, because Google describes its AI features using query fan-out techniques to surface a wider and more diverse set of helpful links. That is a coverage argument, not a volume argument, and the difference is whether each new page adds something a reader could not get from the last one.
How to tell a specialist from a rename
Three questions sort the field. What does this provider do that a competent technical and content search engagement would not already do, and if the answer is only vocabulary, price it as ordinary search work. How is citation measured, and can the method be inspected. What would change if the AI features changed shape next quarter, which is a question about method rather than tactics.
The content risk is worth asking about directly. Google says that using automation, including AI generation, to produce content for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings violates its spam policies, and the spam policies name scaled content abuse. A pipeline with nobody accountable for the claims is an exposure with a new acronym on the cover, so ask who is named as the author and what original data or first-hand experience the content carries.
What a fair engagement looks like on paper
A defensible proposal has three priced components: a technical eligibility pass with a checkable end state, content work with named authorship and a defined subject scope, and measurement you can inspect. It commits to a method rather than an outcome, because no supplier controls a citation surface it does not own.
Treat guaranteed citation in any AI product the way you would treat a guaranteed ranking. Google's own hiring guidance states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and warns against firms claiming a special relationship with Google; the same reasoning applies to any promise about what an AI answer will quote.
Questions people actually ask
- Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
- In eligibility terms, no. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimizations necessary, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The difference is emphasis on direct answers, checkable sources and clean structure.
- Do I need special markup or an AI text file?
- Google says you do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. Accurate structured data and crawlable content still help for the reasons they always did, but a file sold as an AI requirement is not one.
- Can an agency guarantee my pages will be cited in AI answers?
- No. The citation surface belongs to the platform, not the supplier, and the same logic applies as with rankings, where Google states no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Buy a method and an inspectable measurement approach instead.
- What should this cost?
- Ask for the technical pass, the content work and the measurement to be priced separately, then compare each against the published prices from agencies in this index that print them. A proposal whose distinctive element is vocabulary should be priced against ordinary technical and content search work.
