Choosing a local SEO company in Tampa on evidence
Tampa Bay is one market to a resident and several to a search engine. A business in Ybor competes on different terms from one in Brandon, Carrollwood, St Petersburg or Wesley Chapel, because distance from the searcher is one of the factors Google says decides local results, and a single office cannot outrank geography by force of will. That makes the choice of provider a practical question about method rather than a question about creativity. This index lists firms on what they publish about themselves: printed pricing, disclosed minimums, stated specialisms and named clients whose sites you can open and check before you spend a week on sales calls.

How to vet a Tampa local SEO company
- Ask how they plan to handle geography. Tampa Bay spans several distinct search markets. Ask each candidate exactly how they intend to reach searchers in St Petersburg or Wesley Chapel from your actual location, and be direct about whether the plan involves new addresses, because Google requires a profile to reflect the business as it is genuinely represented in the real world.
- Get the review process in writing. Reviews are one of the factors Google names under prominence, and they are also advertising. The FTC's guidance requires endorsements to reflect honest experience and material connections to be disclosed. Ask precisely how reviews are solicited and who writes the words; if it is anyone but the customer, stop there.
- Apply Google's own hiring questions. Ask for examples of previous work, ask what results are expected and in what timeframe, and treat a guaranteed ranking, a refusal to explain method or a claimed special relationship with Google as reasons to end the conversation. Google's guidance on hiring search help names all three.
- Settle ownership before the first invoice. The website, the domain, the analytics property, Search Console, any call tracking numbers and the Google Business Profile should be owned by your business with access granted to the agency. Agree the offboarding in writing at signing, including what happens to tracked phone numbers.
What Google publishes about local ranking
Google's own guidance says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well the profile matches the search. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher or the searched location. Prominence is how well known the business is, which Google says is influenced by information across the web including links, articles and directories, and by review count and score. On the same page Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
That single paragraph resolves most Tampa sales pitches. It means a complete, accurate profile and genuine reviews are foundational rather than optional; it means a Brandon location will not simply outrank a St Petersburg competitor for searches typed in St Petersburg; and it means any guarantee of map pack placement is describing a mechanism the platform says does not exist.
What separates the quotes
Three variables explain most of the spread. The first is production: if the agency writes the pages, produces the photography, manages the profile and handles developer tickets, that labour is inside the fee, and if you supply it the fee should visibly drop. The second is location count, because a business with one office and a business with six are different amounts of work every month, not the same work with a bigger number attached.
The third is category competition. Legal, home services, medical and hospitality are the most contested categories in Tampa Bay, and a plan that would work comfortably for a niche B2B service will not move a personal injury or roofing result. Ask candidates which of your competitors they have looked at by name and what specifically those competitors have that you do not.
The evidence this index uses
Firms are listed on material they published themselves. A printed price or a disclosed minimum counts, because it tells a buyer whether the firm works at their size before an hour disappears into a discovery call. Named clients count, because a named client can be opened and inspected while a logo wall cannot. A written method counts, because it can be held against the invoice in month seven.
Unauditable awards, anonymous case studies with round numbers and claims of privileged access to Google do not count, and the last of those is specifically named in Google's hiring guidance as a warning sign. Where a firm publishes nothing checkable, treat the absence as information.
Questions people actually ask
- How long does local SEO take to work in Tampa?
- Profile completeness and on-page fixes can move results within weeks. Prominence, which is reviews, citations and links, accumulates over months. Ask a candidate to separate what they expect to move by day 90 from what they expect to take a year, then hold the reports against that.
- Should I open an office in St Petersburg to rank there?
- Only if you will genuinely staff it. Google's guidelines require the profile to reflect the business as it is consistently represented in the real world, and suspensions cost far more to unwind than the ranking was worth. Real service coverage and real local content are the durable answer.
- Do citations still matter?
- Consistent business information across the web is part of what Google describes under prominence, so accuracy matters. Bulk citation packages sold by the hundred are a different thing, and buying volume rarely moves a competitive Tampa result on its own.
- What should the monthly report show?
- The work performed, named item by item, alongside calls, form fills and rankings. Reports built only from traffic charts make a slow month indistinguishable from an idle one, which is exactly when a buyer needs to be able to tell the difference.
