Home service business marketing, compared on evidence

Home services covers roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, pest control, cleaning, landscaping and a dozen more trades, and they share one commercial shape: a local catchment, a mix of urgent and planned work, a job that has to be scheduled and staffed, and a customer who chooses partly on speed of response. That shape means the marketing question is rarely how do we get more leads. It is which jobs do we want more of, in which parts of our service area, at what cost per booked job. This page sets out how the work is scoped, what moves the price, and how to compare suppliers on published evidence rather than on the volume they promise.

How to shortlist a home services agency

  1. Name the jobs you want more of, by margin. Not all work is worth the same. Replacements, installations and maintenance agreements usually carry better margin than single repairs, and a campaign aimed at cheap urgent calls can fill a diary while the business earns less. Give each candidate your target mix by job type before they quote, and ask how the plan changes to favour it.
  2. Draw the service area honestly. Coverage claims cost money. A radius that includes places your crews will not drive to buys clicks and calls you cannot serve profitably. Ask how targeting will be set, whether locations will be excluded as well as included, and how the plan handles the edges of the area where travel time destroys the margin on a small job.
  3. Audit what happens to the leads you already get. Count unanswered calls, time to first reply on form submissions, and how many enquiries never reach the scheduling system. In urgent trades an unanswered call goes straight to a competitor. Fixing intake is usually cheaper and faster than any campaign, and an agency that raises it unprompted is one worth shortlisting.
  4. Compare on published pricing, minimums and reporting. Line the candidates up on monthly fee, hours and seniority, deliverable counts, smallest accepted engagement, and how a result is defined. Insist the definition of a countable lead is a genuine potential customer rather than any inbound call, and that reporting connects through to booked jobs rather than stopping at the form.

The channel mix that suits the trades

Four channels do the work. Earned local visibility carries the steady flow of urgent calls once your profile and pages are right, and it is the cheapest source per job. Paid search covers the demand you cannot yet rank for and is the only lever that responds in days when a season turns or a crew has capacity. Organic service pages carry the planned, higher margin work because that customer researches over days. Reviews and referrals feed everything and are the least substitutable asset you own. Beyond those, shared lead marketplaces have a place as a supplement, priced on cost per booked job rather than cost per lead, since the same enquiry is typically sold to several firms and you compete on callback speed.

Google's local business structured data documentation sets out the properties a page can express, including opening hours and areas served, and keeping those consistent with your business profile is the least glamorous and most frequently skipped part of the job. Where site details and profile details disagree, the markup stops helping and the inconsistency is invisible until someone checks.

What moves the price of the engagement

Number of trades, number of locations, and the size of the service area, mostly. A single trade operating from one yard needs a handful of service pages and one profile maintained properly. A multi trade operator across several counties needs a page structure that does not collapse into duplication, several profiles kept accurate, and reporting that breaks out by branch or the weak branch hides behind the group total. Ask how the fee changes as you add a trade or a location, and what that increment actually buys in attention rather than in inclusion.

Seniority is the other half. Ask for hours and who performs them by name and level, then compute the effective rate. In this sector the work is well understood and repeatable, which means junior execution can be fine provided a senior person set the plan and reviews it. What does not work is a junior executive both choosing and doing, because the choosing is where the leverage sits.

Questions people actually ask

How do we know a campaign is working?
Cost per booked job by channel and by job type, not cost per lead. A month with many enquiries and few bookings is either a targeting problem or an intake problem, and the report should say which. Ask that reporting connect to your scheduling system so the loop actually closes.
Should each trade have its own website?
Usually not. Separate sites split the effort and the authority, and both then move slowly. A single site with strong per trade sections is easier to maintain and generally performs better. Separate sites make sense mainly where the brands are genuinely distinct in the market or where one is being prepared for sale.
Do we need pages for every town we serve?
Only for places with a real presence or a real record of work. Thin pages spun up for towns you rarely reach add little and can weaken the pages that matter. Write fewer location pages with actual projects, staff and response times, and use paid placement to cover the edges of the area.
How should the budget flex through the year?
Paid spend should follow the season closely because it responds within days. Organic pages should be published well ahead of the demand so they are indexed and settled before the calls arrive. Ask for a calendar built backwards from your peak weeks rather than a flat twelve month plan.
