Social media consulting services, priced honestly
Social media consulting is advice, not labour, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake a buyer makes here. A consultant audits what you are already publishing, decides which platforms deserve budget, writes the strategy and the measurement plan, and trains or supervises whoever presses publish. A management retainer does the publishing itself. Plenty of firms sell both under one heading, so the first job is deciding which one you actually need, because the price gap between them is large and neither is a substitute for the other. This page sets out what the engagement includes, what moves the quote, and the questions that separate a strategist from a scheduling service.

How to buy social media consulting services
- Separate advice from execution. Write down what you want at the end: a documented strategy and a trained team, or posts going out every week without you thinking about it. Consulting delivers the first, management delivers the second, and a proposal that blurs them will be priced against whichever is cheaper to deliver.
- Ask what the audit actually covers. A real audit reads your existing accounts, your competitors, your analytics and your customer enquiries, then says which platforms to drop. If nobody asks for access to your analytics before quoting, the recommendation is a template, and you can predict what it will say.
- Fix the deliverables and the review points. Consulting goes wrong when it ends in a slide deck nobody implements. Agree in writing which documents you receive, how many working sessions with your team are included, and when the consultant returns to check whether the plan survived contact with your calendar.
- Settle disclosure and ownership before launch. If the plan involves creators, employees posting about the company, or gifted product, the FTC endorsement guides require the connection to be disclosed clearly, and that duty sits with the advertiser. Also confirm you own the accounts, the ad account and the content files, not the consultant.
What moves the price
Three variables explain most of the spread in quotes. The first is scope of platforms: a strategy for one channel where your buyers actually are costs a fraction of a plan covering five, and the five channel version is usually four channels of filler. The second is whether paid social is inside the engagement, because ad strategy brings audience architecture, creative testing plans and budget pacing with it, all of which are separate disciplines from organic content. The third is how much of your existing setup has to be repaired before advice can be given at all, since a consultant inheriting three abandoned accounts and no tracking is doing archaeology before strategy.
The engagement shape matters as much as the scope. A one off audit and strategy is a project fee with a defined end. A fractional arrangement, where a senior person is available for a set number of days each month, is a retainer and usually costs more over a year but keeps the thinking attached to your business. Day rates suit a workshop or a launch. Ask which shape you are being quoted, because comparing a project fee against a monthly retainer without noticing is how buyers conclude one firm is triple the price of another.
What to check before you sign
Ask who does the work. Consulting is sold on seniority, so the person in the pitch should be the person in the working sessions, and the contract should name them. Ask for two clients in a comparable position, ideally with a similar buying cycle rather than a similar logo size, and call them. Ask what the consultant recommends stopping, since an adviser who only adds activity has not tested whether the current activity earns its keep.
Then read the measurement plan properly. Follower counts and impressions are the easiest numbers to move and the least connected to revenue. A credible plan names a small set of outcomes you would notice without a dashboard: enquiries, demo bookings, applications, retail footfall, and how each is attributed. Insist that the reporting cadence and the numbers are written into the agreement before work starts, because renegotiating what success means after a quiet quarter never goes well for the buyer.
Questions people actually ask
- What is the difference between consulting and management?
- A consultant decides what should happen and teaches or supervises your team to do it. A manager does it: writes, schedules, publishes and responds. Consulting is usually a project fee or a small monthly advisory retainer, management is a larger ongoing retainer priced by output volume and the number of channels covered.
- How long should a social media consulting engagement run?
- An audit and strategy typically runs a few weeks. Anything sold as consulting but billed for a year is usually management in disguise, or an adviser hedging against a plan that will not be implemented. A common sensible shape is a defined strategy project followed by short quarterly reviews once your team is running it.
- Should the consultant hold our account logins?
- No. Keep ownership of the pages, the business manager and the ad account, and grant access at the permission level the work needs. That is standard practice and it costs nothing to insist on. Confirm in writing what happens to content files, creative assets and audience lists on the last day of the engagement.
- Do disclosure rules apply if employees post about us?
- Yes. The FTC endorsement guidance treats a material connection, including employment, as something the audience must be able to see, and the advertiser is responsible for making that happen. Ask any consultant how disclosure will be handled in the plan they are proposing before the first campaign runs.
