Contractor websites compared on published pricing and evidence

Contractor website quotes are hard to compare because the providers are selling different things under the same name. One is a one-off build you own. Another is a monthly subscription where the site belongs to the vendor. A third is a lead generation programme with a website attached. We compare providers only on evidence they publish themselves, including stated pricing, minimum terms, named clients and what is actually included, so a trades business can see the real cost of ownership over several years rather than the attractive number on the first page of the proposal.

How we compare contractor website providers

  1. Record published pricing only. Build fees, monthly care plans, stated minimums and contract length, taken from what the provider publishes. Where nothing is published, the absence is recorded rather than replaced with an estimate.
  2. Separate build from subscription. A one-off build with separate hosting is not the same purchase as an all-inclusive monthly plan, so we normalise both to a total cost of ownership over a multi-year period with ownership terms attached.
  3. Check what is actually included. Service pages, photography, quote forms, call tracking, review integration and booking are the line items that differ most between quotes, and each is recorded separately rather than folded into a single package label.
  4. Flag the ownership terms. Who holds the domain, the design and the content, and what transfers if the contractor leaves. This is the term that most often turns a cheap monthly plan into an expensive one at exit.

What a contractor site needs to do

A trades website has a narrow job: convince a homeowner or property manager that you are legitimate, competent and reachable, then make contacting you take under a minute. That means licence and insurance details stated plainly, a real page per service rather than one list, genuine photographs of your own completed work, the service area described accurately, reviews shown honestly, and a phone number and quote form that work on a phone held in one hand at a job site.

Speed matters more here than in most categories, because a large share of trades enquiries come from mobile searches made under time pressure. Google's page experience guidance and the Core Web Vitals metrics describe what a slow page costs in practical terms, and a heavy template with a full-screen video header is the most common way a contractor site fails that test.

Subscription plans and what they hide

Monthly all-inclusive plans are popular with contractors because the number is small and predictable. Their cost appears in two places: over three to five years the total frequently exceeds a good custom build, and in many contracts the contractor does not own the site, so cancelling means starting over and losing the content and the search history attached to it.

Before signing any subscription, get three answers in writing. Is the domain registered in my business name. Do I own the design and the content, and can I export them. What happens to my site and my rankings if I cancel. A provider comfortable with all three is usually fine; a provider who deflects on any of them has told you what the plan is really for.

Questions people actually ask

Do providers pay to be listed here?
No. Comparison is built from evidence providers publish themselves and placement is not sold. A provider that publishes no pricing is shown as publishing none.
Should a contractor buy a template or a custom site?
A well-built template with your own photography and properly written service pages beats a custom site with stock imagery, and costs far less. Custom work earns its price when you need integrations such as scheduling, estimating or job management software connected to the site.
Is call tracking worth adding?
For most trades businesses yes, because the majority of enquiries arrive by phone and without tracking there is no way to tell which marketing produced them. Make sure the numbers are registered to your business so they move with you if you change provider.
How many service pages should a contractor site have?
One for each service you genuinely want work in, written with enough substance to be useful, rather than a single page listing everything. Thin pages created only to target extra search terms tend to underperform and dilute the pages that matter.
