Buying web design consulting services on published evidence
Web design consulting sits between two things a buyer already understands: hiring a design studio to build a site, and hiring a developer to change one. Consulting is neither. You are buying judgement about what to build, what to fix first and what not to spend money on, usually delivered as an audit, a set of recommendations and a period of advice while somebody else executes. That makes it unusually hard to compare, because the deliverable is a document rather than a website. This page sets out what a consulting engagement should produce, what moves the price, and the questions that separate a useful advisor from an expensive slide deck.

How to buy web design consulting
- Decide whether you need advice or execution. If you already know what to build and need it built, buy a build. Consulting earns its fee when the decision itself is unclear: whether to rebuild or refactor, which platform to move to, why a redesign lost traffic, or how to brief a studio you are about to hire.
- Ask what the deliverable physically is. An audit document, a prioritised backlog, wireframes, a technical specification, a platform recommendation with reasoning. Get the artefact named in the proposal. Consulting quoted purely in days with no stated output is the version most likely to end in a deck nobody can act on.
- Insist recommendations are prioritised by effort and impact. A list of sixty findings with no ordering is a transcript, not advice. The value is in what to do first with the budget you have. Ask for each recommendation to carry an estimate of effort and an expected effect, so your developers can start on Monday.
- Check that accessibility and performance are in scope. Ask whether the review covers accessibility and page performance, or only visual design and structure. ADA.gov publishes guidance on web accessibility for businesses open to the public, and a design review that ignores it hands you a problem you will pay to fix twice.
What moves the price of a consulting engagement
Scope of the estate first. Reviewing a twelve page brochure site is a fraction of the work of reviewing a store with thousands of product pages, a checkout and a logged in area, because the failure modes multiply with the states a user can be in. Second is depth: a heuristic review by one senior person is quick, while a review supported by analytics, session recordings and user testing is a research project with a research budget. Third is whether the consultant stays involved during execution, which is usually the difference between a document that gets implemented and one that does not.
The fourth driver is the seniority you are actually buying. Consulting is one of the few services where the named individual matters more than the firm, and it is common for a proposal to be sold by a principal and delivered by someone junior. Ask who does the work, how many days of theirs you get, and whether the person in the room during the pitch appears in the delivery plan at all.
How design decisions collide with search
The most expensive avoidable event in this field is a redesign that loses search traffic, and it usually happens through a handful of mechanical causes: page addresses changed without redirects, content reduced during a visual simplification, headings replaced by images, or a rendering approach search engines struggle with. Google's SEO starter guide is explicit that search engines need to be able to find, crawl and understand a page, and a design consultant who cannot speak to that is advising on half the problem.
The practical protection is to require any redesign recommendation to include a migration plan: an inventory of current pages, a redirect map, and a plan to preserve the content that earns traffic today. Ask for it in the proposal rather than at launch. A consultant who volunteers it before you ask has been through a bad migration and learned from it, which is precisely the experience you are paying for.
What our index records
We record what each provider publishes on its own site, with the date checked: stated pricing, day rates or project minimums, disclosed minimum engagements, whether clients are named, and which services are claimed in house. Consulting is priced by day or by project more often than by retainer, which makes published day rates a more useful reference here than monthly figures.
Use the published rates for the scope you want as a reference range, then take it into the conversations that produce no number. And weight named clients heavily for this service in particular, because a consultant's value is almost entirely their judgement, and the only real evidence of judgement is work you can look at and clients you can call.
Questions people actually ask
- What is the difference between a consultant and a design agency?
- A consultant advises and usually does not build. An agency builds and advises as part of doing so. The consultant is worth hiring when the decision is genuinely open, when you need someone without a stake in the answer, or when you are about to spend a large sum with an agency and want the brief to be right first.
- Is a design audit worth paying for before a rebuild?
- Often yes, because the cheapest change is the one you decide not to make. An audit that stops an unnecessary rebuild, or that identifies which pages must survive a migration, typically costs a fraction of the build. The condition is that it arrives prioritised and actionable rather than as a catalogue of observations.
- Should the consultant also do the implementation?
- It varies. Independence is the reason to separate them, since a consultant who wins the build has an incentive to recommend one. Continuity is the reason to combine them, since handovers lose detail. A common compromise is advice from an independent consultant with a limited number of days retained to review the builder's work.
- How do I judge a consulting proposal before I know the answer myself?
- Judge the questions rather than the conclusions. A strong proposal asks what you sell, to whom, what currently converts and what you have already tried, before proposing anything. One that arrives with a fixed methodology and no questions is selling a process, and the process will be the same whatever your problem turns out to be.
