Home service marketing company options, judged on evidence

A home service marketing company sells booked jobs, or it should. The customers are HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, garage doors, pest control, landscaping and the rest of the trades where a homeowner searches, calls two or three numbers and hires whoever answers and can come soonest. That buying behaviour shapes everything: the channels that work are the ones that appear at the moment of need, the measurement that matters happens on the phone rather than on the website, and speed of response is often worth more than the marketing that generated the call. This page covers the channels and what each is actually good for, the ways money reliably gets wasted in this category, and the specific things to check before signing with any provider.

How to buy home service marketing

  1. Instrument the phone before anything else. Put call tracking on every channel, record calls where your state permits it, and have someone listen to twenty of them. Until you can tell a booked job from a wrong number, every performance report you receive is a count of ringing telephones.
  2. Define what counts as a lead in writing. A form fill is not a lead, a spam call is not a lead, and an existing customer calling about a warranty is not a new lead. Write the definition into the contract along with how disputed leads are handled and credited.
  3. Start with the channels that catch existing demand. Local Services Ads, search ads on emergency terms, and the Google Business Profile capture people who already need you today. Demand generation on social has a place, but it is the second purchase, not the first.
  4. Trial with a booked-job target and an exit. Ninety days, an agreed cost per booked job rather than cost per lead, weekly call reviews, and a clean handover of accounts, tracking numbers and the Google Business Profile if it ends.

The channels, and what each one is good for

Local Services Ads sit at the top of many home service results and are bought per lead rather than per click, with a screening process behind them. They tend to be the fastest route to phone calls and the least sensitive to how good your website is. Search ads on urgent terms come next and give you control over which services and which areas you bid on, at the cost of needing someone competent to manage negative keywords, because untended accounts in this category buy an enormous amount of irrelevant traffic.

Local SEO, meaning the Google Business Profile plus service and area pages on your own site, is the slowest and the most durable, and it is the only channel that keeps producing when you stop paying. Reviews are part of it rather than separate from it. Below that sit direct mail, door hangers, yard signs and neighbourhood referral apps, which still work for density-driven trades. The right mix depends less on the trade than on whether you are trying to fill trucks tomorrow or build a book of business over two years.

Where the money reliably goes missing

The first leak is the unanswered phone. Contractors buy leads and then miss a third of the calls during busy periods, at which point the marketing invoice is paying to send customers to whoever answers second. Before increasing spend, measure your own answer rate and speed to callback, because that is usually the cheapest improvement available and no agency can make it for you.

The second is shared leads sold several times over, which some lead vendors do openly and others do quietly. The third is the aggregate report: a monthly dashboard that shows total leads across all channels, with no way to see that the number is being carried by branded calls from customers who already knew you. Insist on per-channel, per-service and per-area reporting, and on a separate line for calls from people searching your own business name, because that line is the one that flatters every provider's numbers.

What to check before signing

Ask who will own the accounts and the assets: the Google Business Profile, the ad accounts, the tracking numbers, the website and the domain. Provider-owned assets are the standard trap in this category, and the moment to discover it is not the moment you want to leave. Ask for two references in your trade and a similar market size, and ask those references what happened in their slowest month.

Then look at what the provider has published. A disclosed minimum spend, a stated price band or a documented service scope tells you whether you are their kind of client before either side invests a sales cycle. Providers who publish nothing and quote only after a discovery call are not necessarily worse, but you are paying for that call in time, and the comparison across three of them is harder to make honestly.

Questions people actually ask

Local Services Ads or search ads first?
For most trades, Local Services Ads first, because they are bought per lead, require less account management and appear above the ordinary ads. Search ads earn their place once you want control over specific high-margin services or areas that the lead-based product will not target precisely enough for you.
Are bought leads worth it?
Sometimes, as a supplement, never as the whole plan. Purchased leads are frequently sold to several contractors at once, so your close rate depends on answering first. Treat them as a way to fill capacity in slow weeks, and track cost per booked job separately from your owned channels so the two are not averaged together.
How much of the budget should go to SEO versus ads?
Ads while you need work this month, SEO so that in two years you need fewer ads. A common pattern is to start heavily weighted to paid, then shift a share to local SEO and reviews as the profile strengthens. What does not work is a small SEO retainer alongside a large ad spend and an expectation that the SEO will show up in this quarter's numbers.
What should a monthly report contain?
Calls and forms split by channel, service and area, with branded calls separated out, the count of those that became booked jobs, and the cost per booked job for each channel. If you cannot see which channel produced revenue rather than contact, the report is a spend summary rather than a performance report.
