How to compare top Magento development companies

Magento, now sold as Adobe Commerce with an open-source edition alongside it, is a platform people choose for a reason: complex catalogues, multiple stores or currencies, business-to-business pricing rules, deep integration with an ERP, or a checkout that has to do something a hosted platform will not allow. That makes the choice of development partner higher stakes than on simpler platforms, because the code, the hosting and the upgrade path are all yours to live with. This page shows what the firms in our index publish about pricing, minimums and clients, and sets out how to judge a Magento partner on evidence rather than on a portfolio page.

How to evaluate a Magento development partner

  1. Confirm which edition and version you are actually on. Open source and the commercial Adobe Commerce edition differ in features, licensing and support, and version currency determines your security exposure. Establish exactly what you run today and what the upgrade path looks like before you take a single quote, because a proposal written against the wrong assumption is worthless.
  2. Ask how they handle upgrades and security patches. This is the defining question for Magento. Ask their process for applying security patches, how long after release they typically deploy, how they test, and how heavy customisation in past projects affected upgrade cost. A firm without a rehearsed answer will leave you stranded on an old version.
  3. Separate development from hosting and operations. Magento is demanding to host, and performance problems are frequently infrastructure rather than code. Clarify who owns hosting, caching, search infrastructure, monitoring and incident response, and what the escalation path is at two in the morning during a sale weekend. Ambiguity here becomes finger-pointing during an outage.
  4. Require code quality practices in writing. Version control you own, a staging environment, code review, automated tests where feasible, and documented deployments. On a platform where you inherit the codebase, engineering discipline is not a nicety, it is what determines whether your next agency can work with what this one leaves behind.

Why Magento projects go wrong

The recurring failure is customisation that makes upgrading expensive. Every core modification and every poorly written extension raises the cost of the next version upgrade, and eventually a business finds itself on an unsupported release because upgrading has become a project nobody wants to fund. A good partner keeps customisation in modules, documents it, and tells you honestly when a requested feature will cost more in future upgrades than it earns in revenue.

The second failure is extension sprawl. Third-party extensions vary enormously in quality, and conflicts between them produce bugs that are expensive to diagnose. Ask a candidate how they evaluate an extension before installing it, whether they read its code, and how many they typically remove during an initial engagement. Firms that audit and remove are usually the ones who have cleaned up after somebody else.

Judging technical claims without being technical

You do not need to read code to test a development firm. Ask for a live store they built and maintain, and check its behaviour yourself: how quickly a category page becomes usable on a phone, whether search works sensibly, whether the checkout is quick. The Core Web Vitals measures published on web.dev give you a vocabulary for loading, interactivity and visual stability that you can hold a partner to without arguing about implementation.

Then ask about process. Who reviews code, what the release cadence is, how a bug reported on a Monday reaches production, and what happened during their last serious incident. Specific, unheroic answers indicate a team with real operating discipline. Answers that describe every project as smooth indicate either a very short history or a poor memory.

What our index records, and what to verify yourself

We record what each company publishes: stated project or retainer pricing where it exists, disclosed minimum engagement, named clients, and the date we read the page. For Magento specialists the named client list is unusually informative, because the platform is chosen by businesses with recognisable complexity and a firm that has served comparable catalogues is easier to assess.

Verify the rest directly. Ask which developers would be assigned, where they are located, what the overlap in working hours is, and whether the people in the pitch will be the people writing the code. Ask what happens to the repository, the documentation and the deployment credentials if you leave. On a platform you own outright, the exit terms matter more than on any hosted alternative.

Questions people actually ask

Is Magento still the right choice?
It suits complex catalogues, business-to-business pricing rules, multi-store or multi-currency operations and deep back-office integration. If your requirements are simpler, a hosted platform will usually cost less to run and to maintain. Ask a candidate to argue honestly for the alternative, and be wary of one who cannot.
What should ongoing support cost?
Support is usually a monthly retainer covering patches, monitoring, small changes and incident response, sized by the complexity of your build and the hours reserved. Ask what is included, what the response times are, and what falls outside into billable project work, then compare quotes on those inclusions rather than the headline.
How risky is an upgrade?
It depends on how much customisation touches the core and how well it was written. Ask for an upgrade assessment before committing to a partner, covering current version, patch status, extension inventory and estimated effort. A firm that quotes an upgrade without that assessment is guessing with your money.
Should the same firm host and develop?
It simplifies accountability, because performance and stability problems can be code or infrastructure and a single owner cannot pass them across. The trade-off is concentration risk and a harder exit. If you split them, name the escalation path and the person responsible for coordinating during an incident.
