Marketing for dental specialists, compared on evidence

An endodontist, an orthodontist and an oral surgeon are usually sold the same marketing package, which is the first sign that the seller has not thought about the business. A specialist practice has two audiences, not one: the general dentists who refer, and the patients who arrive already told where to go. Neglect the referral side and a beautiful patient campaign quietly cannibalises a source of work that costs nothing to keep. This page shows what the agencies in our index disclose about price and minimum engagement, what separates specialist experience from a general dental template, and how to make a shortlist comparable before a single proposal arrives.

How to buy specialist dental marketing

  1. Decide the split between referral and direct patient work. Referral marketing is relationship work with a small measurable digital layer: a referring dentist portal, case updates, and a site that reassures a colleague. Direct patient acquisition is search and paid media. Agree the ratio before scoping, because agencies are rarely strong at both.
  2. Check whether the agency has worked in your specialty. Orthodontic demand behaves like consumer retail with long consideration and financing questions. Endodontic demand is urgent, low volume and mostly referred. Ask for two named practices in your own specialty, then look them up yourself rather than reading the case study.
  3. Fix what counts as a result before the first invoice. Agree whether success is a booked consultation, a started case, or production value, and who reports it. Specialist volumes are small enough that a month of noise can look like a trend, so set a reporting window long enough to mean something before you sign.
  4. Get patient privacy handled explicitly. Intake forms, chat widgets, call recordings and advertising pixels can all touch patient information. Ask in writing which vendors receive form data, whether recordings are stored, and who signs a business associate agreement. Silence here is a genuine reason to remove a candidate.

What specialist dental agencies publish

Our index records what each provider states publicly on its own site, with the date checked. Dental marketing is one of the more transparent corners of the agency market, largely because so many providers sell to single location practices who compare on price. Agencies aimed at multi location specialty groups and dental service organisations disclose far less, because those engagements are scoped individually and often include work that is closer to management consulting than to marketing.

Treat the published figures as a floor rather than a forecast. A quoted starting retainer usually excludes media spend, photography and any site build, and those three items commonly cost more in the first quarter than the retainer itself. Ask each candidate for a first year total, not a monthly number, and compare those.

The claims a specialist practice cannot make

Advertising for a dental specialty runs into two rule sets at once: the state dental board on specialty announcements and credentials, and general advertising law on substantiation. The Federal Trade Commission's guidance for small business advertisers is direct about the underlying principle, which is that objective claims need evidence behind them before they run, and that applies to before and after imagery, outcome claims and comparisons to other providers just as much as to a price promise.

In practice the agency is rarely the party disciplined when a page crosses a line, so ask a candidate which board rules it writes to, who reviews copy before publication, and what its policy is on patient imagery and testimonials. A provider that has never been asked those questions will say so in the way it answers.

Questions people actually ask

Is referral marketing worth paying an agency for?
Partly. The relationship work belongs to you and your team, and no agency can replace a visit to a referring office. What an agency can usefully build is the infrastructure around it: a referring dentist page that explains your process, a simple case update flow, printed and digital referral forms that actually get used, and a website that reassures a colleague checking you out. That is a small, bounded project rather than a monthly retainer.
How much of the budget should go to paid search?
It depends on how much of your work is referred. A practice with a healthy referral base often needs paid search only for the specific procedures it wants more of, which keeps the budget small and targeted. A practice building a direct to patient line, orthodontics most obviously, usually needs sustained paid media because the consideration window is long. Ask each agency to justify its split against your case mix rather than a category benchmark.
Do I need a separate website from my general practice site?
If the specialty practice is a separate legal entity with its own location and phone, yes. Search engines and patients both handle one clear entity per site far better than a combined presence. If you are a specialist working inside a general practice, a well built section with its own service pages and clear provider information is usually enough. Ask any candidate to justify the recommendation in terms of how patients actually search.
What is a realistic timeline?
Expect the first quarter to be build and instrumentation, not results. Site work, tracking, listings and review flow take weeks, and specialist search volumes are low enough that meaningful data needs a few months to accumulate. A provider promising a defined patient number in the first sixty days is either buying it with your media budget or guessing, and it is fair to ask which.
