Website copywriting service, compared on evidence

Copywriting is the rare agency purchase you can assess directly, because the deliverable is the same medium as the pitch. If a provider's own pages are vague, the pages it writes for you will be too. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, including pricing where they print it, so a shortlist can be built from published work and stated specialisation rather than from a discovery call.

How to buy website copy

  1. Decide what the page has to make happen. Copy is written against an action: an enquiry, a booking, a signup, a phone call. Name the action for every page in scope before you brief anyone, because a homepage rewrite aimed at nothing is the most common way this money gets wasted and the hardest failure to argue about afterwards.
  2. Ask who does the research and how many hours it gets. Good copy comes from customer interviews, sales call recordings and the objections your team already answers daily. Ask how many hours of research the quote includes and who conducts it. A quote with no research line is a quote for rewriting what is already on the page in a different order.
  3. Read three pieces they have written, in full. Not a portfolio grid of logos, three live pages you can read end to end. Check whether the copy makes a specific claim, whether it says who the product is not for, and whether a real person could have said it out loud. Vagueness in a sample is not a style, it is a lack of access to the client.
  4. Settle revisions, ownership and the brief in writing. How many revision rounds are included, who signs off, what happens if the brief changes mid-project, and who owns the copyright on delivery. These are the clauses that decide whether a fixed price stays fixed, and they cost nothing to agree before the work starts.
  5. Check the agency against its own published pages. Named writers, published address, printed prices where they exist, and case detail that names the client. Everything in this index is listed on what can be verified from an agency's own pages, and copy is the one service where holding a shortlist to that standard takes only a few minutes of reading.

Where the money actually goes

A website copywriting quote usually bundles four different jobs: research, message strategy, drafting and revision management. Only the third is what most buyers picture. The first two are where the value is created and the last is where the budget silently disappears when nobody agreed how many rounds were included or who signs off.

This is why per-page pricing between providers is hard to compare at face value. One quote may include interviews with your customers and a message hierarchy you can reuse across every channel; another may include a writer reading your existing site once. Ask both to itemise research hours separately from drafting, and the gap becomes visible immediately.

Copy for people, and what search rewards

Copy written to please a search engine and copy written to persuade a buyer used to be treated as different crafts. Google's own published guidance closed that gap: it warns against content primarily made to attract visits from search engines, asks whether a page provides original information, reporting, research or analysis, and asks whether it is the sort of page you would bookmark, share with a friend or recommend. Its spam policies name keyword stuffing directly.

The practical consequence is simple. A copywriter who asks for your customers' actual words, your sales objections and your differentiators is doing the thing search rewards as well as the thing conversion rewards. A provider who asks only for a keyword list is proposing to fill a page with repetition, which is a named policy violation as well as bad writing.

Freelance writer or agency team

Copywriting is an unusually freelance-heavy trade, so the choice between an individual and an agency team is a real one rather than a matter of scale snobbery. An individual writer usually gives you deeper access to the person actually writing; an agency gives you continuity, an editor, and cover when someone is unavailable. Both can be excellent and both can be thin.

The deciding question is volume and continuity. A one-off site rewrite suits a specialist individual with strong published samples. An ongoing programme of pages, where consistency of voice across dozens of pages matters and deadlines cannot slip, suits a team with an editor in the loop. Ask either one who edits the work before it reaches you, because unedited copy is a draft regardless of who wrote it.

Questions people actually ask

What should a website copywriting service include?
Research, a message hierarchy, drafting and an agreed number of revision rounds, with a named action for each page. Ask for research hours to be itemised separately, since that line is what most distinguishes two quotes that look alike.
Do I need SEO copy or conversion copy?
Increasingly the same thing. Google's published guidance warns against content made primarily for search engines and asks whether a page offers original information and analysis, while its spam policies name keyword stuffing. Copy grounded in customer language serves both purposes.
Is a freelance copywriter cheaper than an agency?
Often per page, though not always in total once editing, project management and revision rounds are counted. Judge on published samples you can read in full and on who edits the work, rather than on the headline rate.
Who owns the copy once it is delivered?
Whatever the contract says, which is why it should say so explicitly before work starts. Agree copyright transfer on final payment, the number of revision rounds, and who has authority to sign off, and the fixed price is far more likely to stay fixed.
