Finding the best b2b agencies for your buying cycle
There is no such thing as a single best agency for business to business marketing, and any list that claims otherwise is ranking on something other than fit. What exists is a set of agencies whose strengths match a particular buying cycle: long consideration windows, buying committees rather than individuals, small addressable markets, and a sales team that will judge the whole engagement on the quality of a handful of conversations. An agency that is excellent at driving consumer volume can be genuinely bad at this, because the metric it optimizes has no relationship to your pipeline. This page compares the firms in our index on what they publish about pricing, minimums and client work, and sets out the questions that make a shortlist comparable.

How to compare b2b agencies without a listicle
- Write down your deal shape first. Average contract value, sales cycle length, how many people sign off, and whether you sell to a market of thousands or a market of two hundred. These four numbers determine which agencies are plausible and rule out most of them before you look at a single case study.
- Ask what they will be measured on. A qualified opportunity accepted by your sales team is a defensible target. Marketing qualified leads defined by the agency are not, because the agency also controls the definition. Agree the metric, and who owns the definition of it, before you agree the fee.
- Check the client list against your motion, not your industry. A firm that has moved pipeline for a long cycle, committee driven purchase understands your problem even if the vertical differs. A firm with logos in your exact industry but only short cycle consumer work does not. Ask for one reference where the sales cycle looked like yours.
- Establish who does the work after the pitch. Senior people sell, junior people frequently deliver, and that is not automatically wrong. Ask for the names and seniority of the people on your account, how many other accounts they carry, and what happens when the person you liked in the pitch is reassigned.
Why b2b work is priced differently
In consumer marketing, volume is the lever and cost per acquisition is the scoreboard. In business to business, the addressable market is often small enough to fit in a spreadsheet, so the work shifts from reach to precision: reaching a defined set of accounts, producing material that survives scrutiny by technical evaluators, and giving a sales team something useful to send. That changes the cost structure. Content takes longer because it has to be correct enough for a specialist reader. Paid media is expensive per click and cheap per opportunity. Reporting is harder because the conversion you care about happens in a CRM weeks or months after the click.
It also changes what a good agency looks like. Ask how they attribute an opportunity that took five months and nine touches, and listen for an honest answer about the limits of attribution rather than a dashboard promise. Google's own guidance on hiring search help is blunt about the fact that legitimate providers do not promise rankings or guaranteed outcomes, and the same skepticism should apply to any agency promising a precise pipeline number from a cold start.
The evidence worth asking for
Three artifacts tell you more than any deck. The first is a real reporting sample from a live client with the numbers redacted but the structure intact, which shows you what they actually track and what they quietly do not. The second is a piece of published content they are proud of, read by someone technical on your side, because in this market credibility is the product. The third is a written scope with the deliverable counts in it, since the gap between an enthusiastic pitch and a written scope is where most disappointment is manufactured.
Be equally careful with testimonials and case studies on the agency's own site. The FTC's endorsement guides set out that testimonials must reflect genuine experience and that material connections need disclosing, which is a useful lens for reading a wall of glowing quotes. If a claimed result cannot be tied to a named client who will take a reference call, treat it as marketing rather than evidence.
Questions people actually ask
- Should I hire a b2b specialist or a strong generalist?
- A specialist earns its premium when your buying committee is technical, your market is small, or your compliance burden is real. A strong generalist can outperform a mediocre specialist on execution. The useful test is not the label on the website but whether they can describe your buyer's evaluation process back to you without being coached.
- What is a realistic timeline before we see pipeline?
- Add your sales cycle to the time it takes the work to start producing. If your average deal takes four months to close, no agency can show you closed revenue in month two, whatever the pitch implies. Agree leading indicators for the early months and a revenue conversation for later, in writing.
- How do I compare quotes that are structured differently?
- Convert everything to a monthly figure over twelve months, including onboarding fees, media management percentages and any content charged per item. Then list the deliverables each quote actually commits to. Quotes that look far apart often converge once you do this, and the ones that stay cheap usually turn out to have committed to very little.
- Is a smaller agency riskier?
- It is a different risk. A small firm gives you senior attention and concentration risk if a key person leaves. A large firm gives you continuity and a higher chance your account is delivered by people you have never met. Ask both about team stability and about what happens when your main contact goes on leave.
