Choosing the Best Enterprise SEO Agency

Enterprise search work fails for different reasons than small business search work. The tactics are rarely the problem. What breaks an enterprise programme is that the recommendations cannot be implemented: the release train is booked out for two quarters, the content management system is owned by a team with its own roadmap, three business units publish to the same domain without speaking, and legal reviews every word. An enterprise SEO agency is therefore being hired as much for its ability to operate inside that as for its technical opinion. This page sets out what to demand, what genuinely moves the price, and the proof that separates a capable partner from an impressive audit.

How to run an enterprise SEO selection

  1. Define the estate and the constraint before the brief. Write down the domains, subdomains, languages, platforms and business units in scope, and name the real constraint: engineering capacity, content approval, platform limitations or organisational agreement. A brief that omits the constraint will attract proposals that solve the wrong problem at length.
  2. Demand a named team with hours, not a pitch team. The people in the room are frequently not the people on the account. Ask for named individuals, their allocated hours per month, their other accounts, and who covers absence. Write the staffing into the contract with a clause covering substitution, because senior attrition is the most common quiet failure.
  3. Ask how they get work shipped, not what they would recommend. Request a worked example of a recommendation that went through a client's release process: who wrote the ticket, how it was estimated, how it was prioritised against product work, and how long it took. This single question separates agencies that deliver from agencies that produce documents.
  4. Set governance, ownership and reporting up front. Agree who owns the analytics and search console properties, who approves publishing, what the escalation path is, and what the monthly and quarterly reporting cadence looks like. Enterprise programmes drift when nobody named is accountable for the decisions between the quarterly reviews.

What enterprise scope actually means

The word enterprise usually signals four things at once: scale of the site, complexity of the technology, multiple markets or languages, and multiple internal stakeholders. Each adds a different kind of cost. Scale means crawl management, template-level rather than page-level fixes, log analysis and internal linking at volume. Technology complexity means rendering, migrations, structured data and performance work that has to be argued with an engineering organisation, and Google's documentation on Search Essentials and Core Web Vitals is the shared vocabulary for that argument.

International scope multiplies almost everything, because each market needs its own research, its own writers and its own competitive analysis rather than a translation. Stakeholder complexity is the least visible and most expensive: an agency that has to align three business units before a template change ships spends a large share of its hours on coordination. When comparing proposals, ask each one to state how many of its hours go to analysis, to production and to stakeholder work, because that split predicts what the engagement will feel like.

The proof to demand before you shortlist

Ask for two references at comparable scale and complexity, and ask those references specific questions: what shipped, how long the first meaningful change took to reach production, what the agency did when it was blocked, and whether the same people stayed on the account. Ask for a migration story, ideally one that went badly, and listen to what they learned. Every experienced enterprise team has one, and the ones that claim otherwise have not done enough migrations.

Then ask for a small piece of real work before the full contract: a paid discovery, a template review, or an analysis of one problematic section. It costs a fraction of the retainer and it shows you how they write tickets, how they prioritise and whether they can be understood by your engineers. Refuse guaranteed rankings and refuse any provider whose recommendations depend on tactics outside Google's spam policies, because at enterprise scale the downside of a manual action is measured in revenue rather than in embarrassment.

What moves the price and how to structure the deal

Fees track senior hours, market count, content volume and whether the agency produces work or only advises. An advisory engagement with a technical lead and a strategist is far cheaper than a programme that also writes content in several languages, builds structured data and supplies development resource. Decide deliberately which model you want, because buying advisory when your constraint is production capacity leaves you with a backlog of good recommendations and nothing shipped, which is the most common enterprise failure mode.

Structure the contract in phases with a real decision point. A discovery phase with a defined output, then a first delivery phase of two or three quarters with named deliverables, then renewal against agreed measures. Tie reporting to organic revenue or qualified pipeline by template and market rather than to aggregate traffic, because aggregate traffic at enterprise scale can rise for reasons that have nothing to do with the work you are paying for.

Questions people actually ask

What actually distinguishes enterprise SEO from ordinary SEO?
Not the tactics. It is scale, technical complexity, multiple markets and, above all, the number of people who must agree before anything ships. Enterprise agencies earn their fee on template-level thinking, engineering fluency and the ability to move work through a release process that was not designed with them in mind.
Should we hire a large agency or a specialist boutique?
Large firms bring breadth, multiple markets and continuity when people leave. Boutiques bring more senior time per dollar and are often better technically. The deciding question is which one puts genuinely senior people on your account every week, so ask for the staffing plan in writing before you decide.
How long should an enterprise engagement run before we judge it?
Give the first two quarters to shipped work rather than to outcomes: tickets merged, templates changed, pages published, migrations completed. Rankings and revenue at this scale move over three to four quarters. Judging outcomes at ninety days penalises the agencies doing the slow structural work that actually matters.
Who should own the analytics and Search Console properties?
You, without exception. Grant the agency access rather than transferring ownership, keep historic data in your own accounts, and make sure the same is true of the content management system and any tag management. This costs nothing at the start and protects the entire investment at the end.
