Local SEO companies near me, compared on published proof
Searching for local SEO companies near me usually means one of two things: you want someone who can meet you, or you want someone who understands the map results your customers actually use. Only the second requirement is real. Local search work is done on your Business Profile, your site and the citations that mention you, none of which require the agency to be down the road. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so proximity becomes one factor among several rather than the whole shortlist.

How to shortlist a local SEO provider
- Decide whether proximity matters to you. Local knowledge helps when the work involves photography, in-person review collection or events. If the scope is profile management, on-site pages and citations, an agency two states away can do it identically. Say which case you are in before you filter by distance.
- Ask how they treat relevance, distance and prominence. Google's Business Profile help describes local results as a combination of relevance, distance and prominence. A provider who can explain what it will do about each, and admits it cannot move the searcher closer to you, is describing the system as Google documents it.
- Read their review policy before you sign. Ask in writing how reviews will be requested, who writes the replies, and whether any incentive is offered. The Federal Trade Commission's endorsement guidance says an advertiser is ultimately responsible for endorsements made on its behalf, including by an agency.
- Require per-location reporting. If you have more than one location, insist that calls, direction requests and profile views are reported per location rather than summed. An aggregate that hides one dying branch behind two healthy ones is the commonest way local reporting misleads a buyer.
What local SEO work actually consists of
The Business Profile is the centre of it: verified ownership, an accurate name, address and hours, the right primary category and attributes, products or services listed, and photos that are actually of your premises. Google's own help says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, and that responding to reviews and adding photos help the profile stand out. Most of the first month of a competent engagement is unglamorous work on exactly these fields.
The second layer is your website: pages that name the service and the area in language a customer uses, consistent contact details, and a page per genuine location rather than a page per town you would like to serve. The third is prominence off-site: mentions and links from local sources that already carry weight. Google's help also states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, which rules out the entire category of vendors who imply otherwise.
The line between review collection and review manipulation
Reviews are where local marketing most often goes wrong legally rather than technically. Asking every customer for an honest review is fine. Asking only the customers you expect to be happy, suppressing negative reviews, or paying for reviews is not: the FTC's endorsement guidance treats selective solicitation and undisclosed incentives as deceptive, and buying reviews from people who never used the service as clearly deceptive, with enforcement falling on buyers as well as sellers.
The practical test for an agency is whether it will put its review process in writing. Who sends the request, what it says, whether anything is offered in return, and how negative reviews are handled. If any incentive exists, the connection must be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Delegating this to an agency does not move the liability: the FTC says the advertiser remains responsible for what is done on its behalf.
What to expect, and what nobody can promise
Distance from the searcher is a ranking factor no agency controls, so map visibility is naturally uneven across a service area and a provider promising uniform top placement across a whole metro is promising something outside its power. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and its Business Profile help says a better local ranking cannot be requested or paid for. Expect a competent provider to talk about improving the profile's completeness, relevance and prominence, and to report on calls and direction requests rather than screenshots of one lucky search.
Every agency in this index is listed on what can be verified from its own published pages: address, named team, printed prices where they exist, and case detail. There is no paid placement, so a nearby agency appears here on the same terms as a distant one.
Questions people actually ask
- Does a local SEO company need to be near my business?
- Usually not. Profile management, on-site pages, citations and reporting are done remotely. Proximity helps only when the scope includes photography, in-person review collection or local events; decide which you need before filtering by distance.
- How does Google decide local rankings?
- Google's Business Profile help describes a combination of relevance, distance and prominence, and says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to appear. It also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
- Can an agency get me into the map pack for my whole city?
- No one can promise that. Distance from the searcher is part of the ranking and no agency can change where your customers stand. Expect improvement in relevance and prominence, reported per location, rather than a guaranteed position.
- Is it safe to let an agency handle my reviews?
- Only if the process is honest and written down. Selective solicitation, suppression of negatives and undisclosed incentives are treated as deceptive under FTC endorsement guidance, and the advertiser stays responsible for what an agency does on its behalf.
