Choosing an electrician SEO company on published evidence

Electrical contracting is a proximity business. A homeowner with a dead circuit and a commercial facilities manager with a failed panel both search, both call within the hour, and both choose from a handful of names that appear near the top of a map. That makes search the highest leverage marketing channel available to most electrical contractors, and it also makes the market noisy, because every agency selling to trades knows it. This page shows what the electrician focused agencies in our index actually publish about price, minimum engagement and named clients, and gives you a sequence for turning that into a shortlist you can compare on facts rather than on how confident the sales call sounded.

How to shortlist an electrician SEO company

  1. Define your service area before you take a call. Write down the towns and postcodes you will actually drive to, and whether you want residential service calls, commercial maintenance contracts, or new construction work. These are different search markets with different queries and different values per job. An agency cannot aim work it has not been told to aim, and most quotes are vague because the brief was.
  2. Check the local listing before anything else. Most of the available result for an electrician is the map pack, which is driven by the business profile, categories, service areas, reviews and proximity rather than by the website alone. Ask a candidate what they would change in the profile in week one. If the answer is a content plan with no mention of the listing, they are selling you the smaller half of the opportunity.
  3. Ask for the disclosed minimum engagement in writing. The smallest retainer a provider will accept removes more names from a shortlist than any other question, and it takes one email to answer. Where a starting price is published, treat it as a floor for the narrowest scope rather than a forecast of what your programme will cost.
  4. Establish what is done in house and who owns the accounts. Content, web development and review management are commonly subcontracted, which is normal but changes turnaround and accountability. Separately, insist that the business profile, the analytics property and Search Console are created in your company name with the agency added as a user, so your measurement history survives the relationship.

What electrician SEO agencies publish, and what they hold back

Our index records what each provider states on its own website, with the date we checked, rather than what an award badge or a survey claims. In the trades the pattern is consistent: agencies selling to residential contractors publish a starting price far more often than generalist firms do, because price is how they compete against national franchise marketing programmes. Agencies selling multi location or commercial programmes publish nothing and scope on a discovery call.

Neither behaviour predicts quality. What a published price does is let you eliminate mismatches without spending a week on calls, which is the whole point of a comparison. Where a provider publishes nothing at all, we record that as unknown rather than guessing, because an invented figure would make the table look complete while making it useless.

What the work actually consists of for an electrical contractor

The programme has four parts and they are not equally weighted. The business profile and local listings come first, because they generate the map results that most emergency and service enquiries come from. Google documents local business structured data that lets a site state its hours, service area and contact details in a machine readable form, and a competent agency implements it as a matter of course rather than as an upsell.

Then come service pages that are genuinely about one service in one area rather than a template with the town name swapped, reviews collected as a routine part of job completion rather than in occasional bursts, and a site fast enough on a phone that a person standing next to a tripped breaker does not give up waiting. Google's own guidance on hiring a search provider recommends asking for a technical and search audit and treating any guarantee of a specific ranking as a warning sign, which remains the most useful single filter a contractor can apply to a pitch.

What it should cost, and how to judge the return

Price the programme against the value of a job rather than against other agencies. An electrician whose average residential call is modest needs a different volume of enquiries to justify a retainer than one whose typical commercial contract runs into five figures, and the same monthly fee can be obviously cheap in one case and obviously expensive in the other. Work out your average job value and closing rate first, then ask each candidate how many enquiries per month they expect and when.

Track cost per booked job rather than cost per lead, and make sure the office records where every caller came from. The most common way a good programme is cancelled is that nobody wrote down the source of the calls it produced, so the retainer looked like a cost with no matching revenue line.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a specialist electrician SEO agency, or will a generalist do?
Both can work. A specialist arrives knowing the queries, the seasonality and the intake habits of a trades business, which saves months of education. A good generalist covers the same ground more slowly but is less likely to run a template programme identical to the one your competitor down the road is buying. Judge either on the same evidence: disclosed minimum, verifiable clients, what is done in house, and a specific plan for your service area.
How long before search work produces calls?
Listing and profile improvements can move map visibility within weeks. Website and content work generally takes a quarter to show, and competitive suburban markets take longer. Judge the first month on whether the promised work actually happened, the third on whether impressions and map views are moving, and the sixth on booked jobs.
Should I pay for a new website as part of the engagement?
Only if the current one is genuinely holding you back: slow on mobile, no clear phone number, no service pages, or built on a platform you cannot edit. A rebuild resets accumulated search history and costs a quarter of momentum, so it should be a decision with a reason, not a default first step in a retainer.
What should I ask for in the monthly report?
Map views and calls from the business profile, impressions and clicks from Search Console for the queries that matter, form and phone enquiries with sources, and a short plain sentence about what was done and what is next. Rankings alone are not a report, because a rank with no calls behind it is a metric your accountant cannot use.
