SEO for Moving Companies: How to Compare Providers

Moving is a high-consideration, low-frequency purchase bought under time pressure, which makes search the dominant channel and makes trust the thing that closes it. An SEO retainer for a moving company is really buying three things: visibility in the map results for the towns you load and unload in, pages that separate local moves from long distance, storage and specialty items, and a review flow strong enough to survive a market crowded with brokers. This page explains how to compare providers on evidence they have already published, what genuinely changes the retainer, and the contract terms that decide whether you can leave.

How to compare SEO providers for a moving company

  1. Search your own lanes before you take a call. Open a fresh browser and search movers in the two or three towns you most want more work from, plus one long distance phrase such as your city to a common destination. Note who appears in the map results and beneath them, then ask each agency which of those results they manage. The claim takes ten minutes to check and it separates operators from resellers immediately.
  2. Ask for published pricing or a disclosed floor. A provider that publishes packages, or at least names a minimum, can be compared with another. Quote-only pricing usually means the number is set by what you appear able to pay. Ask specifically for the split between the management fee and any advertising spend, and whether spend is billed flat or as a share of the budget.
  3. Count the pages the plan actually commits to. Each origin town and each service line needs its own page, so ask how many will exist, who writes them and by when. A plan that promises rankings without naming the pages that will carry them has not been costed, and you will discover the gap in month four when the content calendar turns out to be two posts a month.
  4. Check how they treat reviews and licensing details. Ask how review requests are sent and whether anything about the process incentivises or filters them. Then check that your USDOT and state licence details appear correctly on the site and profile, because movers get compared against brokers and the licensing details are how a careful customer tells them apart.

What actually moves the retainer

Three inputs explain most quotes. Geography is the first: a mover working one metro needs a fraction of the content of one covering a whole state, because each origin town is a page and a set of local signals. Service mix is the second, since local household moves, long distance, commercial relocations, storage, piano and specialty handling are separate searches with separate buyers. Season is the third and it is unusual in this trade, because demand concentrates heavily in the warm months and a programme that spends evenly across the year is misallocating by design.

Managed advertising is normally billed on top of the retainer and should be quoted separately, with the media budget in your own account rather than the agency's. Moving is an expensive category to bid in because lead brokers are bidding too, so pull the auction estimates for your own lanes before agreeing a number. Expect the agency to argue for concentrating spend into the booking window rather than smoothing it, and be sceptical of any plan that does not mention seasonality at all.

The evidence to demand before signing

Ask for named clients whose sites you can visit and whose visibility you can verify yourself in the markets they claim. Ask who writes the content and who manages the ad account, by name, and whether that person changes after onboarding. Ask for a sample report and check what it counts: booked moves, or estimate requests, or calls, or clicks. Each step back from a booked job is a step further from the thing you are actually buying.

Reviews deserve a separate conversation because they decide as many bookings as rankings do. Ask how requests are triggered, whether they fire automatically from your dispatch software, and confirm nothing in the process offers an incentive or filters out unhappy customers, since the FTC's endorsement guidance treats incentivised reviews without disclosure and the suppression of negative ones as deceptive. A vendor casual about that is a liability attached to your licence rather than a growth partner.

Contract terms that decide whether you can leave

Ownership is the term that matters most. The domain, the website files or platform account, the Google Business Profile, any advertising accounts, the call tracking numbers and the historic reporting data should all be registered in your company's name. Agencies holding any of those themselves have built a switching cost unrelated to their performance, and most owners find out only when they try to move.

Then read the term and the exit. A twelve month commitment with ninety days notice is common but not compulsory, and month to month after an initial ramp period is increasingly available. Ask in writing what happens to your pages, your tracking numbers and your reporting history if you leave, and get the answer before you sign rather than during the argument.

Questions people actually ask

How long before an SEO retainer produces booked moves?
Profile and review work can move map visibility within weeks. Town and service pages usually take several months to earn positions and then compound. Most movers who succeed run paid search alongside for the first two seasons, then let the organic side lower the blended cost per booked move.
Should I buy leads from brokers instead?
They are a different product. Brokered leads are usually shared with several movers, arrive priced per lead, and build no asset in your name. A retainer that earns your own rankings and reviews is slower and eventually cheaper per booked job. Plenty of movers run both and compare cost per booked move directly.
Do I need a page for every town I serve?
You need one for every town you genuinely serve, and each has to say something different: the crews, the typical lane, the building access issues, the jobs you have done there. Pages that differ only by the place name are the pattern Google's spam guidance treats as doorway content.
What is the most common mistake movers make here?
Buying visibility before fixing intake. Unanswered calls and slow estimate responses waste more of the budget than any ranking gap, and they cost nothing to measure. Track answered rate and time to first response for two weeks before you increase spend anywhere.
