Hiring an SEO services consultant on evidence
An SEO services consultant is a different purchase from an agency retainer. You are buying judgment and direction rather than production capacity, usually for a fixed number of days a month, and the value shows up in what your own team stops doing as much as in what gets built. That makes scope the whole game: a consultant with no implementation route produces a document, not a result. This index lists 134 providers on what they publish about themselves, so you can compare consultants and agencies on the same evidence: printed pricing, stated specialisation and proof you can check.

How to hire an SEO consultant
- Decide whether you need direction or delivery. If you have developers, writers and a content owner but no plan, a consultant is the efficient purchase. If you have a plan and nobody to execute it, a consultant will hand you a backlog you cannot clear. Answer this first and half the shortlist disqualifies itself.
- Run Google's own interview questions. Google's hiring guidance suggests asking for examples of previous work and success stories, whether the provider follows Google Search Essentials, what results they expect and in what timeframe, their experience in your industry, and how you will communicate. Those five questions are a better filter than any proposal template.
- Set the access rules before the audit. Google advises granting read access to Search Console during an initial audit and not write access at that stage. Agree who holds analytics, Search Console and CMS credentials, and what level each party gets, before the engagement starts rather than during the first week.
- Define the deliverable and the decision rights. A consultant's output should be a prioritised set of changes with an owner and an expected effect for each, plus a standing route to answer questions from your team. Say who can approve a change and who implements it, or the recommendations will sit unshipped and both sides will blame the other.
Consultant, agency or hire
The three options solve different bottlenecks. A consultant supplies senior judgment in small amounts and is cheapest when your constraint is knowing what to do. An agency supplies a team and is the right answer when your constraint is hands, particularly for content production and technical implementation. An in-house hire is slowest to start and best when search is a permanent, central channel rather than a project.
The failure mode is buying the wrong one for the constraint you actually have. A common pattern is a company with no content capacity hiring a consultant, receiving a strong strategy, and shipping nothing for two quarters. Naming the bottleneck out loud before you take calls prevents it, and it also tells you what the engagement should cost.
Warning signs Google names explicitly
Google's hiring guidance lists the things to be skeptical about, and they show up in consulting pitches as often as in agency ones: unsolicited email offering to fix your rankings, claims of a special relationship with Google or of priority submission, refusal to explain methods clearly, and link schemes or submissions to thousands of search engines. Google also warns that if an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, your site could be removed entirely.
Above all, Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. A consultant selling a guaranteed position is contradicting the documentation of the search engine they claim to understand, and the guarantee usually turns out to attach to a phrase nobody searches.
The honest version sounds duller. A good consultant gives you a range, names the assumptions behind it, tells you which recommendations are cheap and which are expensive, and says explicitly what they do not know yet. Google's starter guide is a fair reference for the timeline conversation: some changes might take effect in a few hours while others could take several months.
Scoping and pricing the engagement
Consulting is usually sold by the day, by the month or by the project, and each shape suits a different need. A one-off audit fits a company with capacity and no direction. A monthly retainer of a few days fits a team that needs steady prioritisation and review. A project fee fits a migration or a replatform, where the work has a defined end and the risk of getting it wrong is concentrated.
Whichever shape you choose, tie payment to a rhythm of review rather than to a promise of position. Ask what the first month produces, what the third month produces, and what evidence you should expect to see by each point. The agencies and consultants in this index that publish their prices give you the reference points to test a quote against; ask any finalist to explain where its number sits relative to them and why.
Questions people actually ask
- What does an SEO consultant do that an agency does not?
- A consultant supplies senior judgment and prioritisation, usually without a production team behind them. That is the cheaper purchase when your constraint is knowing what to do, and the wrong one when your constraint is having anyone available to do it.
- What should I ask an SEO consultant in the first call?
- Google's hiring guidance offers a ready-made list: examples of previous work and success stories, whether they follow Google Search Essentials, what results they expect and in what timeframe, their experience in your industry, and how communication will work.
- Should I give a consultant access to Search Console?
- Yes, but read access during an initial audit, which is what Google's guidance recommends at that stage rather than write access. Agree access levels for analytics and the CMS at the same time, and record who holds what.
- Can a consultant guarantee rankings?
- No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and lists guarantees among the things to be skeptical of. A trustworthy consultant gives ranges, names assumptions and reports against an agreed metric instead.
