Choosing a local SEO company in NYC, on published evidence

New York is the hardest local search market in the country and the easiest one to be sold fantasy in. Density is the whole story: several competitors within a few blocks, boroughs that behave like separate cities, and a customer base that searches on a phone while walking and picks whoever is closest and open. That environment rewards a small number of unglamorous things done consistently and punishes everything else. This page sets out what a local search engagement in the five boroughs actually contains, what moves the price, and how to compare candidates on what they publish rather than on the confidence of the pitch.

How to shortlist a local SEO company in New York

  1. Ask what they can and cannot influence about geography. Proximity is a genuine factor in local results, so a single location in Astoria will not appear for searches in Tribeca however good the work is. A candidate who explains that in the first meeting is being honest. One who promises borough wide visibility from one address is either inexperienced or selling something they cannot deliver.
  2. Get the audit findings on the basics before buying anything larger. Business profile completeness and categories, name, address and phone consistency across directories, review recency and response rate, mobile load speed, and whether each service has a real page. Those five items decide most local outcomes. Ask for the current state of each in writing before agreeing to a content or link programme.
  3. Settle ownership of profiles, reviews and the site. The business profile, the website, the analytics and any review platform accounts must be in your business name with the agency granted access. Agencies that create profiles under their own accounts hold your most valuable local asset hostage, and recovering a profile you do not own is slow and sometimes impossible.
  4. Ask exactly how reviews are collected. Reviews drive local visibility and conversion, so review generation is bundled into most offers. Ask whether every customer is asked or only satisfied ones, whether any incentive is offered, and who writes responses. The FTC rule on fake reviews and testimonials makes fabricated or undisclosed insider reviews a legal risk for the business, not just the vendor.

What actually moves the price

Three variables explain most of the spread. The first is the number of locations, because each one needs its own profile, its own pages and its own review flow, and a three location operator is genuinely three times the maintenance rather than a small increment. The second is the number of distinct services, since a practice offering one procedure and a contractor offering eleven trades need very different amounts of page production. The third is whether content and technical work on the site are inside the fee or beside it, which is the most common reason two quotes at the same headline price contain different amounts of work.

What should not move the price much is the city itself. New York is competitive, but the tasks are the same tasks, and a premium justified by density alone deserves a question. Ask what specifically is more work here, and expect an answer about the number of competing listings and the pace of review accumulation rather than a general statement about the market.

How to compare candidates fairly

Put every quote into the same units: profiles managed, pages produced per month, hours of technical work, review requests sent, reporting contents, and fee. Then ask each candidate for two clients in the boroughs whose situation resembles yours, with permission to call. Ask those references one question in particular: what happened in month four, when the initial fixes were done and the retainer kept invoicing. The answer separates agencies with an ongoing programme from those that front load the work and coast.

Verify the claims with data rather than screenshots. A ranking screenshot in a city this dense is close to meaningless, since results change within a few blocks and are personalised. Exported search console reports and, better, the client's own record of calls and bookings before and after, are the evidence that means something.

The maintenance nobody mentions in the pitch

Local visibility decays. Hours change for holidays, a landlord changes the suite number, a directory syndicates an old phone number, a photo gets replaced by a user submission, a competitor reports your listing. Somebody has to watch for all of that, and it is the least interesting item in the proposal and the one most likely to be dropped when the agency gets busy. Ask what the monthly maintenance checklist contains and ask to see last month's completed version for another client, redacted.

Structured data is part of the same maintenance story. Google's local business documentation sets out the properties a listing can express, including address, opening hours and areas served, and those need to match reality and match every directory. It is dull work with no slide in it, and it is the work that quietly decides whether the rest of the programme has a foundation.

Questions people actually ask

How long before local work shows results?
Profile and consistency fixes often move things within weeks, which makes them the right first spend. Page production and review accumulation work over months. In a market this dense, expect the early gains to come from the boring items and the later gains to come from having more and better recent reviews than the shops on the same block.
Do we need a separate page for every neighbourhood?
Only where you can say something true and specific about serving that neighbourhood. Thin pages that swap a name into a template compete badly and can look like the low value content Google's guidance warns against. A smaller number of genuinely useful pages, plus an accurate profile, outperforms a directory of near identical ones.
Should we pay for citation building packages?
A one time cleanup of inconsistent listings is worth doing and is largely a finite job. An ongoing monthly fee for submitting to more directories has diminishing returns quickly. Ask for the list of directories, check how many of them a real customer would ever use, and price the cleanup as a project rather than a permanent line item.
What if we serve clients at their location rather than ours?
Then your profile should be configured as a service area business and your address handled accordingly, and the pages should describe the areas served in ways a customer would recognise. Ask candidates how they handle this specifically, because misconfiguring a service area business is a common and avoidable cause of poor local visibility.
