Internet marketing consulting services, compared on evidence
Internet marketing consulting services sell direction rather than delivery: an assessment of where the demand actually is, a channel plan, and enough oversight that the plan survives contact with whoever executes it. Bought well it is the cheapest part of a marketing budget and the part that decides how the rest is spent. Bought badly it produces a deck. This index lists 134 agencies on what their own published pages support, including printed fees where they exist, so a shortlist can start from evidence rather than from a discovery call designed to sell you the next stage.

How to buy consulting rather than a deck
- State the decision you need made. Which channel to fund next, why acquisition cost is rising, or whether to bring a function in house. A consultant hired against a named decision produces something usable; one hired to review everything produces a summary of what you already know.
- Insist on a written deliverable and a date. Name the artefact: a channel model, a query and content plan, an audit with ranked findings, or a hiring specification. Vague scopes are where consulting engagements quietly become retainers with no exit.
- Separate advice from execution. A consultant who also wants the delivery contract has an interest in the recommendation. That is workable if it is disclosed and priced separately, and it is a problem if the advisory fee exists mainly to sell the retainer behind it.
- Ask the questions the search engine publishes. Ask for previous work and success stories, what results are expected and in what timeframe, how success is measured, and whether every change made to your site will be shared with you. Those are Google's own suggested questions for hiring search help.
- Check the firm against its own pages. Published address, named consultants with real histories, printed fees, and case detail naming a client and a metric. Every agency in this index is listed on those checks and on nothing else.
What consulting is worth paying for
The value is concentrated in a few situations. Choosing between channels when the data is ambiguous. Diagnosing a decline that the in-house team is too close to see. Writing the specification for a role or an agency search so the next hire is judged against something. Reviewing an incumbent agency's work with enough independence to say what is actually happening. In each case the deliverable is a decision you could not confidently make alone, and it should be cheaper than the mistake it prevents.
What consulting is not worth paying for is a restatement of best practice. If the recommendations could have been written without looking at your accounts, you have bought a template. Ask, before signing, which of your systems the consultant will read and what evidence the conclusions will rest on.
Where consulting engagements go wrong
Three failure modes recur. The scope is written as a set of activities rather than a deliverable, so nobody can say when it is finished. The consultant never gets access to the data that would make the analysis real, and produces judgement based on interviews alone. Or the recommendations land with no owner inside the business, and the document is filed while the same decisions get made the same way.
All three are avoidable at the contract stage. Name the deliverable, name the access required and the date it will be granted, and name the person inside the business who will own the outcome. A consultant who asks for those things unprompted is one who has been held to account before.
Fees, and how to compare them
Consulting is priced as day rates, fixed-scope projects, or advisory retainers, and the same work can be quoted in all three shapes. The comparison only becomes meaningful when each candidate prices the same named deliverable over the same period, which is worth insisting on even when it makes a proposal look expensive.
For context on what senior marketing judgement costs to employ directly, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median pay for advertising, promotions and marketing managers of $159,660 per year in 2024. That is not a benchmark for a consulting fee, but it is a useful reminder of what the alternative to hiring advice actually costs, and it makes an advisory day rate easier to place.
Questions people actually ask
- What is the difference between consulting and an agency retainer?
- Consulting sells diagnosis, planning and oversight; a retainer sells ongoing delivery. Many firms offer both, so ask which hours are advisory and which are execution, and have the scope say so explicitly.
- How long should a consulting engagement run?
- Long enough to answer the question and no longer. Most useful engagements are fixed-scope projects of a few weeks, sometimes followed by a light advisory retainer once someone inside the business owns the plan.
- Can a consultant promise a result?
- A consultant can promise analysis, a plan and a rate of work. Nobody can promise a search position; Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking and that it does not accept payment to rank pages higher.
- What should I supply for the engagement to be worth it?
- Read access to analytics, Search Console and ad accounts, plus honest numbers on margin and sales cycle. Advice built only on interviews is a summary of your own opinions returned to you at a day rate.
