Ecommerce Design Companies: A Buyer's Guide
Ecommerce design companies sell something more consequential than a look. The design decides how a shopper finds a product, how much they trust the page, how many fields stand between them and a completed order, and whether search engines can read the catalogue at all. That is why the category spans such an enormous price range: the same brief can be answered with a themed storefront configured in a fortnight or a bespoke build that takes two quarters, and both are legitimate answers to different problems. The expensive mistake is buying the second when the first would have converted just as well, or the first when your catalogue logic genuinely needs custom work. This page sets out how the work is scoped, what actually moves the quote, and how to compare firms on evidence rather than on portfolio screenshots.

How to shortlist an ecommerce design company
- Decide platform before firm. A hosted platform, an open source stack and a headless build imply different agencies, budgets and long term costs. Settling the platform first shrinks the shortlist honestly, and any firm that recommends a platform before understanding your catalogue is selling their own comfort zone.
- Judge portfolios by shopping, not screenshots. Open three of their live client stores on a phone, search for a product, add it to a basket and start checkout. You will learn more in ten minutes than from any case study, and you will find out whether their work survives contact with real catalogues.
- Ask what happens to search visibility during migration. A redesign that changes URLs without redirects can erase years of rankings in a week. Ask for their migration checklist and whether it covers redirect mapping, canonical handling and structured data, and treat a vague answer as a costly risk.
- Get the post launch arrangement in writing. Stores need continuous change: new categories, seasonal pages, checkout fixes. Ask what support costs after launch, what the response time is, and who owns the code and the accounts if you leave. Ownership questions are cheapest to ask before the deposit.
What actually moves the quote
Catalogue complexity first. Ten products with one variant each is a different project from ten thousand with configurable options, tiered pricing and stock rules across warehouses, and no visual design decision costs as much as that difference. Integrations second: an ERP, a subscription billing system, a tax engine or a bespoke fulfilment flow each add scope that is invisible in a mockup and unavoidable in the build. Content migration third, especially where product data is inconsistent and needs cleaning before it can be imported. Custom design work is real cost, but it is rarely the largest line in a serious ecommerce quote.
Ask every shortlisted firm to break the estimate into design, build, integration, migration and content. Two proposals that look similar at the total often differ completely underneath, and the one that priced migration at zero is the one that will raise a change order. If a firm publishes a minimum project size, take that as useful information rather than as a barrier: a stated floor tells you whether you are their normal client or their smallest one.
The technical work that decides whether the store gets found
Design and discoverability are the same job in ecommerce. Product pages need structured data so that price and availability can appear correctly in search results, and Google publishes the exact properties it expects for product markup. Faceted navigation needs deliberate handling so that filters do not generate an unbounded set of indexable URLs competing with each other. Pagination, canonical tags and out of stock product handling all need decisions made before launch rather than patched afterwards. Speed matters commercially as well as for ranking, particularly on the phones where most consumer shopping starts.
The practical test is to ask a prospective firm who on their team owns these decisions. If the answer is that SEO is handled by a separate vendor after launch, you are buying a build whose ceiling is set by choices nobody in the room was accountable for. The firms worth hiring will raise redirect mapping and structured data before you do, and will be able to show you a store they migrated where visibility recovered rather than quietly declined.
Questions people actually ask
- How long does an ecommerce redesign take?
- A themed storefront with a clean catalogue can be live in weeks. A bespoke build with integrations and messy product data usually takes months, and the data cleaning is the part that slips. Ask for a timeline with named dependencies on your side, because most delays in this category originate with the client, not the agency.
- Will a redesign hurt our search traffic?
- It can, and the cause is almost always URL changes without a complete redirect map. Insist on a migration plan that lists every current URL and its destination, plus a post launch check in the first week. Google publishes guidance on site moves with URL changes that is worth reading before you approve a launch date.
- Do we need custom design or is a theme enough?
- A well configured theme is enough for most stores under a few hundred products, and the money saved is better spent on photography, product copy and advertising. Custom work earns its keep when your merchandising logic or checkout genuinely differs from the norm, not when you simply want to look different.
- Who should own the platform accounts?
- You should, always. The store, the domain, the analytics and the advertising accounts should be in your name with the agency added as a user. This is not a trust issue, it is a continuity issue, and the moment you need it most is the moment a relationship has already gone wrong.
