Link removal services, judged on evidence
Link removal is sold as a cleanup product: someone points at a list of unpleasant referring domains and offers to make them go away. Sometimes that is the right purchase, and sometimes it is an expensive answer to a problem the site does not have. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so a buyer can tell a diagnostic supplier from an outreach mill before paying for either. What follows is the mechanism, the published limits, and the questions that separate the two.

How to buy link removal services
- Establish that there is a problem worth fixing. Check Search Console for a manual action before anything else. Google says most sites will not need to disavow anything, because in most cases it can assess which links to trust without guidance. A ranking drop with no manual action usually has another cause.
- Separate removal from disavowal. Removal means persuading another site's owner to take a link down, which they are under no obligation to do. Disavowal means telling Google to ignore links you could not get removed. Only the second is under your control, and Google frames it as an advanced feature to use with caution.
- Ask what created the links. If a previous supplier bought them, the fix includes stopping the purchase; Google's spam policies treat buying or selling links for ranking purposes as a violation. If they arrived unsolicited from scraper sites, they are usually noise rather than a problem needing paid intervention.
- Insist on a reversible, documented file. A disavow file used carelessly can hurt a site's performance in search, so ask to review the list line by line before upload, keep your own copy, and require a written rationale for each domain rather than a spreadsheet exported from a third-party toxicity score.
- Agree the timeline before the invoice. Google says it can take a few weeks for an uploaded disavow list to be incorporated as it recrawls and reprocesses pages. Any supplier promising recovery within days is describing something the published process does not support.
What the disavow tool actually is
Google's own documentation calls the disavow tool an advanced feature that should only be used with caution, and says that used incorrectly it can harm a site's performance in search results. It also states that most sites will not need it, because Google can usually judge which links to trust without additional guidance. The intended case is narrow: a considerable number of spammy, artificial or low-quality links that have caused, or look likely to cause, a manual action.
The file itself is simple. One URL or domain per line, domains prefixed so the whole site is covered, comments allowed on lines that start with a hash, with limits published on file size and line count. Nothing about it justifies a long engagement on its own. What justifies a fee is the judgement about which links belong on the list and the evidence supporting each decision.
What link removal cannot fix
It cannot fix a site that has no manual action and no link scheme in its history. Ranking losses far more often trace to content, indexing, a migration that dropped redirects, or a competitor doing better work. Buying a cleanup for those is spending on the wrong diagnosis, and it delays the real repair by a quarter or more.
It also cannot undo the underlying behaviour. If pages were mass-produced without adding value, or if location pages were built to funnel visitors to a single destination, those patterns are named in Google's spam policies in their own right, and removing inbound links leaves them untouched. Ask any supplier what else it found, because a firm that only ever finds link problems is selling the only product it has.
Judging a supplier
The evidence that matters is diagnostic rather than promotional: a written assessment of whether a manual action exists, a stated reason for each domain proposed for disavowal, a plan for what happens if nothing changes, and a clear statement of what the supplier believes caused the situation. Agencies listed here are described on what they publish about themselves, and this is a category where published method counts for more than a logo wall.
Refuse recovery guarantees. No supplier controls how Google reassesses a site, the published processing time is measured in weeks rather than days, and a promise of restored rankings by a date is a promise about somebody else's system. Keep ownership of the Search Console property in your own name so the file, and the history of what was submitted, stays with you.
Questions people actually ask
- Do most sites need link removal or disavow work?
- No. Google states that most sites will not need the disavow tool because it can usually assess which links to trust without guidance, and it describes the tool as an advanced feature to be used with caution. Confirm a manual action exists before buying a cleanup.
- How long does a disavow take to have any effect?
- Google says it can take a few weeks for an uploaded list to be incorporated, as it recrawls the web and reprocesses the pages involved. There is no mechanism for an instant result, so treat any promise of one as a reason to look elsewhere.
- Can disavowing links make things worse?
- Yes. Google warns that used incorrectly the feature can harm a site's performance in search results. That is why the list should be reviewed line by line with a written reason for each entry, rather than generated wholesale from a third-party toxicity metric.
- What if the bad links came from a previous agency?
- Then the first fix is stopping the source. Google's spam policies treat buying or selling links for ranking purposes as a violation, and continuing to pay for links while cleaning up old ones simply refills the problem. Ask for the previous supplier's link records as part of any handover.
