Choosing an SEO company in San Jose on published evidence

San Jose is a two market city for search work and the two markets barely overlap. One is technology: hardware, semiconductors, enterprise software and the funded startups around them, buying national or global visibility where the agency's own address is irrelevant and the constraint is technical depth and subject matter credibility. The other is local trade and professional services across Willow Glen, Almaden, Berryessa and Santa Clara, buying map pack presence, reviews and service area pages. Agencies here sell to both with one deck. This page shows what the firms in our index publish about their pricing, minimums and named clients, and gives you a sequence that turns a list of names into a comparable shortlist without a single discovery call.

How to shortlist an SEO company in San Jose

  1. Decide whether you are buying local or national search. Write it down before you take a call. Local work is listings, reviews, proximity and service area pages, and a San Jose address genuinely helps because the agency knows the neighbourhoods and the competitors. National or global work is content depth, technical health and authority, and your agency's postcode changes nothing about the outcome.
  2. Filter on the published minimum before anything else. Ask every candidate, in writing, for the smallest engagement they will accept and what it includes. In an expensive labour market plenty of agencies decline work below a floor, and finding that out by email removes more names in an afternoon than a fortnight of meetings. Treat a published starting retainer as a floor, not a forecast.
  3. Establish what is delivered in house. Content writing, technical development, digital PR and paid media are frequently subcontracted, which is normal rather than disqualifying but changes turnaround and accountability. Ask which parts leave the building, who reviews them, and which named person you will actually speak to on a Tuesday when something breaks.
  4. Fix ownership and reporting before the first invoice. Agree what counts as a lead, which queries are tracked, and who owns the analytics property, Search Console and any ad accounts. You should create those and grant access, never the reverse. Google's guidance on hiring a search provider treats a technical and search audit, with read access, as the normal first step.

What San Jose agencies publish, and what they hold back

Our index records what each agency states on its own website: a price or starting retainer where one is published, a stated minimum engagement, named clients, and the services it claims to deliver in house. Nothing here is a rating and nothing is bought. A firm that publishes a floor is not better than one that does not, but it is easier to compare, and comparability is most of what a buyer is short of at this stage.

The pattern in this market is that agencies serving technology clients almost never publish pricing, because every engagement is scoped, while those serving local service businesses publish more often because the packages are repeatable. That means an absence of price on a site is weak evidence about cost and strong evidence about who the agency sells to. Read it that way rather than as secrecy.

What actually moves the price in this market

Labour dominates, and Bay Area labour is expensive, so the same scope costs more here than in most of the country. Beyond that, four things move a quote: how much content has to be produced and who has to be interviewed to produce it, whether the site needs engineering work rather than editing, whether the competitive set is national or a handful of local firms, and whether the agency is expected to own reporting integration with a CRM.

Be sceptical of a quote that arrives without any of that being discussed. A price given before anyone has looked at your site, your analytics or your competitors is a package price, and package prices are fine when the scope is genuinely repeatable and misleading when it is not. Ask what would make the number go up in month three, and listen for whether the answer describes work or describes an upsell.

Questions that separate a shortlist

Four written questions do most of the work. What is your minimum engagement and what does it include. Which parts of delivery are in house. Which two clients most like us can we contact. And what will be measurably different in six months, stated as something a finance team could verify. Written answers are comparable side by side in a way that meetings are not.

Then check the answers against what the agency publishes. A firm claiming deep technical capability whose own site is slow and thin has given you evidence. A firm naming clients that turn out to be three years past is another kind of evidence. None of this requires a call, and doing it first makes the calls you do take much shorter.

Questions people actually ask

Does hiring locally in San Jose actually help?
For local search it helps, because the agency knows the competitive set, the neighbourhoods and often the businesses themselves. For national or global search it makes no difference to results and usually adds cost, since Bay Area rates are high. Buy proximity when proximity is part of the product, not out of habit.
Why do so few agencies here publish prices?
Because most of their work is scoped rather than packaged, and a published number would either be too low to be honest or too high to survive first contact. Treat missing pricing as information about their client mix rather than as evasion, and get the minimum engagement in writing instead.
How long is a reasonable initial commitment?
Long enough for work to be published and read by a search engine, and short enough that a bad fit is not a year of your budget. Many buyers settle on an initial term of a few months with a defined deliverable set, then a rolling arrangement with a notice period. Insist that you own every account so that leaving costs you access changes, not a rebuild.
What should the first month contain?
An audit you can read, a prioritised list of fixes with owners, agreed tracking with a definition of a lead, and the beginning of production rather than a strategy document that arrives in week four. If month one produces only a deck, ask when work starts and get the answer in writing.
