Best lawyer SEO company: how buyers verify the claim

Every agency selling to law firms describes itself as the best lawyer SEO company, and the phrase carries no information on its own. What can be checked is narrower and more useful: whether the agency has published work in your practice areas, whether it understands that a law firm site is attorney advertising governed by state rules, how it sources links and content, and whether it will put a forecast in writing without promising a position. This index lists 134 agencies on what can be verified from their own published pages, so a shortlist starts from evidence rather than from a superlative.

How to test the claim

  1. Ask the five questions Google publishes. Examples of previous work, adherence to Google Search Essentials, expected results and timeframe, how success will be measured, and experience in your industry and geographic market. Google publishes those questions for buyers of SEO, and an agency that answers all five in writing has already separated itself.
  2. Test bar-rule literacy in the first call. Ask who checks published content against your state's advertising rules and what happens to a page that fails. Rules modelled on Rule 7.2 require the name and contact information of a responsible lawyer on a communication and restrict specialization claims; an agency that has never heard of this is learning on your licence.
  3. Trace links and content to a source. Ask where links come from, whether any placement is paid, who writes the practice-area content and whether a lawyer reviews it. Google's spam policies treat links created mainly to manipulate rankings as link spam, and say violating sites may rank lower or not appear at all.
  4. Require a forecast range and an exit. A credible proposal gives a range, states its assumptions and defines what happens if the range is missed. Pair it with a notice period and a data-handover clause covering Search Console, analytics, content and any accounts opened in your firm's name.

Why superlatives are the weakest signal in this market

Legal search terms are among the most expensive in US advertising, which draws in vendors whose main competence is selling to lawyers. A best-of claim on an agency's own site is marketing copy; a best-of list on a third-party site is often an advertising product with a placement fee. Neither tells you whether the agency can rank a family law page in your county.

The signals that survive scrutiny are duller: named clients with matter-type detail, printed pricing, a named team with real biographies, published writing that shows knowledge of the practice area, and the agency's own visibility for its specialty phrase. This directory lists agencies on exactly that kind of evidence and does not sell placement, so the ordering you see is not for sale.

The compliance question most SEO vendors have not considered

A law firm website is a communication about a lawyer's services. State conduct rules modelled on Rule 7.2 permit paying the reasonable costs of advertising, including online ads, directory listings and website design, while prohibiting giving anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services. That distinction reaches directly into marketing tactics: referral arrangements, some lead-generation products, and any placement where the seller states or implies that it recommends you.

The rules also require the communication to carry the name and contact information of at least one lawyer or firm responsible for its content, and they restrict specialization claims unless a named accrediting body has certified the lawyer. The details vary by state and your own bar's rules control. Nothing here is legal advice; the practical point for a buyer is to make bar review a gate in the publishing workflow, and to write that gate into the contract.

What a serious proposal contains

A named query set with the practice areas and jurisdictions it covers, a content plan that says who writes and who reviews, a technical work list with owners, a link and digital PR method described concretely enough to audit, a reporting shape that ties organic entries to signed matters rather than to sessions, and a price broken into deliverables. Anything shorter is a brochure.

It should also contain what will not be done. No ranking guarantee, since Google states no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. No city pages for places the firm cannot serve, since Google's spam policies name doorway pages built to rank for specific similar queries. No content generated at scale without expert review, since scaled content abuse is named in the same policies.

Questions people actually ask

How do I compare lawyer SEO companies fairly?
Hold each to the same evidence: published work in your practice areas, printed pricing where it exists, a named team, a written account of link and content sourcing, and a stated position on state advertising rules. Score them on that grid rather than on presentation.
Is a top-ranked agency automatically the best choice?
It proves the agency can rank its own competitive phrase, which is a real signal and not the whole picture. Match it against practice-area fit, who does the work day to day, and whether the reporting reaches signed matters.
Can any agency guarantee first-page rankings for a law firm?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and treats guarantees as a warning sign when hiring an SEO. A forecast range with named assumptions is the honest version of the same conversation.
Who is responsible if marketing content breaches bar rules?
The lawyer is. Rules modelled on Rule 7.2 require a responsible lawyer's name and contact information on the communication, so the firm carries the professional obligation even when an agency wrote the page. Build bar review into the publishing process and keep the records.
