Industrial marketing services, compared on evidence

Industrial marketing sells pumps, castings, controls, contract manufacturing and capital equipment to engineers and procurement teams. Almost nothing that works in consumer marketing survives the transfer. The buying group is several people, one of whom is technical and unimpressed by adjectives. The cycle can run past a fiscal year. The deal may arrive through a distributor or a rep firm rather than your own website. And the specification, not the campaign, decides the sale. This page covers what an industrial marketing engagement should contain, how to compare agencies that claim the sector, and where the budget actually belongs.

How to buy industrial marketing

  1. Map the buying group first. Name the engineer who specifies, the buyer who negotiates and the operations manager who lives with the result. Each needs different material, and an agency planning one campaign for all three has not worked in the sector.
  2. Audit the technical content you already own. Datasheets, CAD files, installation manuals and application notes are what engineers actually search for. Most manufacturers own them and publish them badly, as untagged PDFs. Fixing that is often the highest-return week of the engagement.
  3. Decide how the channel is treated. If distributors or reps carry the relationship, agree whether marketing generates leads to hand over, supports the channel's own demand, or competes with it. Getting this wrong creates conflict no amount of campaign quality fixes.
  4. Set a measurement window that matches the cycle. Judge the first two quarters on qualified enquiries, sample requests, CAD downloads and quote volume. Judge revenue when the cycle allows. Write both windows into the contract so the review is not an argument.

What industrial buyers do before they contact you

They search a part number, a specification or a failure mode, download a datasheet or a CAD model, compare against two or three alternatives, and build an internal case. Most of that happens without a form being filled. The practical consequence is that content answering a specification question, published as a real page rather than buried in a gated PDF, does more work than any campaign, and that gating datasheets removes you from the shortlist rather than capturing the lead.

It also means search visibility matters at an unglamorous level of detail: the exact alloy, the exact standard, the exact tolerance. These queries have small volumes and high value, which is the opposite of the traffic-first approach a generalist agency brings. Ask a prospective agency to show the specification-level queries they would target, and listen for whether they speak the vocabulary or paraphrase around it.

How to compare agencies claiming the sector

Ask for named manufacturing clients and the specific work done. Sector claims are cheap; a case study with a product category, a channel structure and a metric is not. Ask who writes the technical content: if the answer is a generalist copywriter with an engineer review step, the review step is where the schedule will fail, so ask how long a page takes to clear that review at their existing clients.

Then check whether their pricing is published at all, and if not, which comparable engagement they will describe. Industrial retainers cluster around content production and search, with trade media, events and distributor support added as needed. A proposal heavy on social media and light on technical content is a consumer playbook wearing a hard hat.

Where the budget usually belongs

For most manufacturers with an existing customer base and a neglected website, the order is: make the catalogue findable and the datasheets indexable, then build application-level content for the products carrying margin, then add paid search on the specification queries that convert, then trade media and events for categories where the buying group will not find you online at all.

Reversing that order, starting with a rebrand or a video campaign, is the most expensive mistake available here, because it spends the budget on the part of the process your buyers reach last. If an agency opens with brand work for a manufacturer whose datasheets are not indexed, it is selling what it likes making.

Questions people actually ask

Do we need marketing if distributors sell for us?
Yes, but a different kind. When a channel carries the relationship, marketing's job is to create specification demand that pulls product through the channel and to arm distributors with material they can use. Competing with your own channel for the same enquiry damages both sides.
Should technical datasheets be gated?
Usually not. An engineer evaluating a specification will pick a competitor whose data is one click away rather than fill in a form. Publish the specification openly, keep the form for quotes, samples and application engineering support, and treat downloads as an interest signal rather than a lead.
How long before we can judge an industrial engagement?
Two quarters for leading indicators such as enquiry quality, quote volume and sample requests; longer for revenue, because capital purchases follow budget cycles. Agree both windows and the specific metrics up front, or the twelve-month review becomes a debate about attribution.
Is trade media still worth buying?
In categories where the buying group reads it, yes, and those categories still exist. Test it as a measurable line with its own tracking rather than as a relationship expense, and compare it against paid search on the same specification queries before you renew.
