Account based marketing companies, compared on evidence

Account based marketing is a small-list purchase: a named set of target companies, a team that researches them, and campaigns built for a handful of buying committees rather than a market. That makes the usual agency comparison points misleading, because volume metrics say nothing about whether the right eleven accounts moved. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so the shortlist starts from evidence you can read rather than from a pitch deck.

How to choose an ABM provider

  1. Fix the account list before the agency. An ABM engagement is only as good as the list it runs against. Write the target accounts, the buying roles inside them and the reason each belongs, then hand that to candidates. An agency that offers to build the list for you is quoting a research project as well as a campaign, and it should be priced separately.
  2. Separate the research from the media. ABM cost splits between account research and the paid and outbound distribution that reaches those accounts. Ask every candidate to quote the two lines apart, because a retainer that hides research inside media spend cannot be compared with one that prints it, and only one of the two lines scales with your list.
  3. Ask what they do that a list tool does not. Intent data vendors and contact databases are commodity inputs that you can buy directly. The agency's value is in what it does after the data arrives: the account narrative, the sequencing across roles, and the sales handover. Ask for a worked example on an account like yours, with the artefacts attached.
  4. Agree the sales handover in writing. ABM fails most often at the seam between marketing and sales, not in the campaign. Settle before signing who books meetings, what a qualified account looks like, how quickly your sales team responds, and what the agency does when an account engages. Put the service levels on both sides into the statement of work.
  5. Verify claims against the agency's own pages. Published address, named team, printed prices where they exist, and case detail that names the client and the outcome. Agencies are listed in this index only on what can be verified from their own published pages, and a shortlist held to a lower standard than that is being assessed on sales copy.

What you are actually buying

An account based programme is three purchases stapled together: research on a fixed set of companies, creative built for the buying committee inside them, and distribution narrow enough to reach those people without wasting budget on everyone else. The research is the part that cannot be automated cheaply and the part most likely to be quietly thin, because it looks the same in a report whether it took an afternoon or a fortnight.

That is why the useful comparison between account based marketing companies is not headline retainer size. It is how many named accounts the retainer covers, who does the research, and what the agency hands your sales team when an account starts engaging. Two quotes at the same monthly number can differ by a factor of several in the depth per account, and the quote alone will not show it.

Measuring a programme that runs on small numbers

Standard funnel reporting breaks here. With a list of fifty accounts, click-through rates and impression counts are noise, and a month with no meetings can be a perfectly healthy month. The measures that carry information are account-level: how many target accounts have engaged at all, how many buying roles inside each, whether the engagement is moving up the seniority ladder, and whether opportunities opened.

Agree that reporting shape before the first invoice, and agree the review horizon with it. Search and outbound both take time to compound, and Google's own guidance about search work notes that some changes take effect in hours while others take several months. A programme judged monthly against a target of closed revenue will be cancelled before the evidence exists either way.

Where ABM and demand generation get confused

Plenty of agencies sell demand generation with an account list bolted on and call it ABM. The tell is the media plan: if the targeting is a broad audience with account exclusions rather than an account list with role-level treatment, you are buying demand generation, which may well be the right purchase but is not the one you asked to price.

The other tell is content. Genuine account based work produces artefacts aimed at a named company, its stated priorities and its competitors. Recycled sector content with a logo dropped into the header is a template, and it will be recognised as one by exactly the senior buyers the programme exists to reach.

Questions people actually ask

How many accounts should an ABM programme target?
Fewer than most first drafts. The list has to be small enough that a real person can research each company and each buying role inside it within the hours you are paying for. Ask candidates how many hours per account their quote assumes, and multiply.
Can an ABM agency promise meetings with named accounts?
No credible one promises a specific company will meet you. What can be committed to is activity and quality: research depth, sequencing, response times and a defined qualification standard. Treat a guaranteed meeting count as a forecast to interrogate, not a service level.
Should ABM sit with the same agency as our SEO?
Only if it genuinely has depth on both sides, evidenced by published work in each. ABM and search compete for the same content team; a combined provider removes a coordination seam but has to prove it is not simply moving one budget into the other.
How do I verify an ABM agency before a call?
From its own published pages: address, named team, printed prices where they exist, and case detail that names clients and describes the account list rather than reporting anonymous percentages. Everything in this index is held to that standard.
