Plumber company marketing, compared on published evidence

Plumbing is a demand capture trade before it is a brand. Most revenue arrives from somebody with a problem right now, searching on a phone, calling the first firm that answers, and the marketing job is to be present and reachable at that moment across the map pack, paid search and your own site. The rest of the job is smoothing the seasonal troughs with planned work: repipes, water heaters, softeners, drain lining and service plans. Agencies selling to plumbers know this and most pitch the same package. This page shows what the firms in our index publish about pricing, minimum engagements and named clients, and sets out the sequence that turns a list into a shortlist you can actually compare.

How to shortlist a plumbing marketing agency

  1. Fix your booking rate before you buy more calls. Ask for a week of call recordings from your own office. If a meaningful share of ringing phones never becomes a booked job, more marketing multiplies a leak. Missed calls, slow callbacks and untrained intake cost more than any agency fee, and no advertising budget compensates for a phone that goes unanswered at four on a Friday.
  2. Separate emergency capture from planned work. These are different campaigns with different economics. Emergency work is bought on immediacy and proximity, judged on cost per booked job within hours. Planned work such as repipes and water heater replacement is bought on trust and comparison, judged over weeks. An agency that runs them as one budget will quietly starve the slower one.
  3. Filter on the disclosed minimum and the contract length. Ask in writing for the smallest engagement accepted, the term, the notice period, and whether media spend is included or separate. Trades marketing has a long history of twelve month lock ins with sites the client does not own, so get both answers before any pricing conversation and treat reluctance as an answer in itself.
  4. Agree what counts as a lead, then measure it. A form fill is not a lead, a booked job is. Define it before launch, require call tracking that records source and outcome, and insist that reporting shows booked jobs and revenue rather than impressions and rankings. If the agency cannot connect its work to your dispatch software or your job book, ask how it intends to prove anything.

What plumbing agencies publish, and what they hold back

Our index records what each agency states on its own website: published pricing or a starting retainer, a stated minimum engagement, named clients, and the services claimed as in house. Nothing is rated and nothing is paid for. The value is comparability. Agencies selling to trades publish price more often than most of the market, because the packages repeat, which makes the ones that stay silent worth a direct question.

Read the named clients carefully. A plumbing firm of eight trucks and one of eighty have almost nothing in common operationally, and an agency whose case studies are all one size is unlikely to have a process for the other. Where an agency also serves your direct competitor in the same city, ask how exclusivity is handled, because in a local trade it matters more than in most sectors.

Where the money actually goes

For most plumbing firms the budget splits across three things: presence in local search, meaning the business profile, reviews, service pages and location pages; paid search for emergency terms, where cost per click is high because the intent is immediate; and the website itself, which has to load fast on a phone and make calling trivial. Everything else, including social media, brand video and print, is secondary until those three are healthy.

The single largest recurring cost for most is paid media rather than the management fee, so understand the split before you compare quotes. An agency charging less to manage a budget it recommends doubling is not cheaper. Ask for the proposed media spend, the management fee, the software costs and the one off build costs as four separate numbers on one page.

Ownership, reviews and the things that outlast the contract

Own everything. The domain registered to your business, the hosting in your name, the analytics and Search Console properties yours, the ad accounts yours, the business profile claimed by you with the agency granted manager access, and the call tracking numbers portable. Agencies that build on their own platform and rent it to you are common in this trade, and the arrangement only reveals itself when you try to leave.

Reviews are the compounding asset here and no agency can buy them for you. What a good one does is build the request into the job: a text or email at completion, from the technician who did the work, with a direct link, plus a documented process for responding to negative reviews promptly and without argument. Ask any candidate to describe that process in detail, since it is where sustained local visibility is genuinely earned.

Questions people actually ask

How much should a plumbing company spend on marketing?
There is no universal figure, and any agency quoting one has not looked at your numbers. Work backwards instead: your average job value, your close rate on enquiries, and what you can afford to pay for a booked job while keeping the margin you need. That gives you a defensible ceiling per job, which is a far more useful budget than a share of revenue.
Is paid search worth it when clicks are expensive?
Frequently yes for emergency work, because the searcher is buying within the hour and a single booked job can pay for a lot of clicks. It is far less forgiving for browsing queries. The deciding number is your booked job value against your cost per booked job, not your cost per click, so insist that reporting is built at that level.
Should I sign a twelve month contract?
Only with a clear exit and full ownership of your accounts and website. Long terms are defensible when substantial build work happens up front and the agency needs to recover it. They are not defensible when the deliverable is a monthly retainer of ongoing work. Negotiate a notice period after an initial term rather than an automatic annual renewal.
Do I need a separate page for every town I serve?
Only for the towns where you genuinely want work and can say something true and specific, ideally including jobs you have completed there. Mass generated location pages with a swapped place name add nothing for a reader and are easy to spot. A handful of substantial pages consistently outperforms a large set of empty ones.
