Branding services, hired on evidence

Branding services is one of the loosest phrases in agency marketing. It can mean a logo and a colour palette delivered in a fortnight, or a full positioning exercise that decides what the company sells, to whom, and in what words, with the visual identity as the last step rather than the first. Those are different purchases with different price tags and different people doing the work. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so you can see which end of that range each one actually operates at before you book a call.

How to buy a branding engagement

  1. Decide whether you are buying identity or positioning. Identity work produces marks, type, colour and usage rules. Positioning work decides the audience, the category and the claim, and it changes what the sales team says. Naming which one you need first prevents paying positioning prices for a logo, or the reverse.
  2. Ask what the deliverables physically are. A brand guideline document, a logo suite in working file formats, type licences, messaging frameworks and template files are all separate items. Get the list in the proposal, with file formats and licence ownership stated, before price is discussed.
  3. Check who does the work. Studios differ on whether the strategist who runs the workshops also writes the messaging, and whether design is in-house or subcontracted. Ask for named people and their role on your project, then check those names on the agency's own published team page.
  4. Agree the review structure up front. Rounds of revision, who signs off, and what happens when a stakeholder joins late are the three things that turn a fixed-price brand project into an open-ended one. Fix the number of rounds and the approval chain in writing.
  5. Plan the rollout as part of the budget. A new identity has to reach the website, signage, documents, ad creative and social profiles before it exists in public. Ask what rollout support is included and what is billed separately; the gap is where brand projects usually stall.

What is inside a brand engagement

Most credible engagements move through discovery, positioning, identity and rollout. Discovery is interviews with customers and staff plus a look at competitors, and it should produce findings you did not already know. Positioning turns those findings into a category, an audience and a claim, written plainly enough that a salesperson can use the sentence. Identity translates that into a mark, a typographic system, colour, imagery direction and usage rules. Rollout applies it across the website, documents and advertising.

Studios that stop after identity are not doing worse work; they are doing a smaller job, and their prices reflect it. The failure mode is a buyer paying for identity and expecting positioning outcomes, then judging the logo for a problem the logo was never scoped to solve.

What branding cannot be asked to do

A brand refresh does not by itself produce demand. If nobody is searching for what you sell, a new identity gives the same silence a better typeface. Where branding does measurable work is in conversion and recall: a clearer claim raises the share of visitors who understand the offer, and consistency makes repeat exposure add up rather than reset.

Any agency willing to promise revenue from an identity project is promising something it cannot control. Treat brand outcomes as the ones you can actually observe: message consistency across channels, sales team adoption, and whether the site's own pages now say the same thing in the same words.

Prices, and why so few are printed

Branding is one of the least-priced services in the agency market because scope varies so widely. A minority of studios print starting figures, and those published floors are the honest reference points in this index. Ask each finalist to position its quote against them, and to break the fee into discovery, positioning, identity and rollout so you can compare like with like.

Agencies here are listed on what they publish and what can be verified from their own pages. Placement is never sold, and nothing in this index is a guarantee of commercial results.

Questions people actually ask

What do branding services actually include?
At minimum a logo suite, colour, typography and usage guidelines. Fuller engagements add discovery research, positioning, messaging frameworks, and rollout across the website and collateral. Ask for the deliverables list with file formats and licence ownership stated in writing.
How long does a branding project take?
Identity-only projects commonly run in weeks; positioning-led engagements with research and rollout run in months. The pacing driver is usually your own approval chain, so agree who signs off and how many revision rounds are included before the project starts.
Is a rebrand worth it for a small business?
It is worth it when the current identity actively confuses buyers, when the offer has changed, or when inconsistency is costing you recognition. It is rarely the right first spend when the problem is that too few people know you exist.
Should the branding agency also build the website?
One team removes a handoff and usually gets a faster rollout. Two teams can buy deeper craft on each side. Either works if the guidelines are precise and someone is accountable for the site matching them; ask to see a guideline document from a past project.
