SEO for home services, hired on evidence
SEO for home services is a local problem before it is a content problem. Roofers, HVAC contractors, electricians, plumbers and remodelers win work from people who search on a phone, within a radius, often under time pressure, and who choose from a map result and a review count long before they read a website. That shapes what a good provider does and, more importantly, what a bad one gets you suspended for. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so you can shortlist on evidence rather than on a promise made in a first call.

How to buy local visibility safely
- Fix the profile before funding the site. The business profile, its categories, its service area and its reviews usually carry more weight for a home services firm than any page you can publish. Ask what the provider will do there in week one and how it will prove the change.
- Insist on one profile, honestly configured. Google's guidelines put a service-area business on one profile for its central office with a designated service area. A proposal built on extra listings for surrounding towns is a proposal built on a suspension risk.
- Ask how reviews will be earned. The only safe answer is asking every real customer, without incentives and without steering the rating. Anything else contradicts Google's review policy and the FTC's position that a company is responsible for what others do on its behalf.
- Tie the reporting to booked jobs. Calls, forms and booked work per source, with new customers separated from repeat ones. Rankings and traffic are inputs; a home services owner is buying a full schedule and should be reported to in those terms.
What the work actually consists of
A correctly configured profile with accurate categories and service area; a website with a real page per service that answers what the customer asks before booking; location pages only for places you genuinely serve, written with detail a local would recognise; and a steady flow of genuine reviews. That is most of the job for most contractors.
The rest is speed and answering. A phone that rings out during an emergency search wastes every dollar spent upstream of it, which is why the best providers ask about your intake process before they ask about your keywords.
The tactics to refuse
Templated city pages, one per suburb with the place name swapped, are the pattern Google's spam policies describe as doorway pages, and violations can mean lower rankings or removal from results. Bought links and incentivised reviews sit in the same category of risk sold as a shortcut.
Profile name stuffing is the other common one. Google requires the profile to reflect the real-world business and prohibits adding services, locations or taglines to the name, and it reserves the right to suspend profiles that break the guidelines. A suspended profile costs a contractor more than a year of fees.
Choosing between local specialists and generalists
Home services specialists know the seasonality, the call patterns and the intake failures, and their case studies name trades rather than industries. A generalist can do the same work well but should be asked to show a comparable local engagement rather than a national one.
Whichever you pick, hold the shortlist to the standard used in this index: named people, real address, published pricing where it exists, and case detail specific enough to check. Firms that publish more about themselves tend to be easier to hold to account later.
Questions people actually ask
- Is a Google Business Profile more important than my website?
- For most home services firms the profile drives the first impression and the call, while the site closes the decision. Both matter, but a provider who ignores profile accuracy, categories, service area and reviews has skipped the part customers see first.
- Should I build a page for every town I serve?
- Only where you genuinely work and can write something a resident would find useful. Google's spam policies describe doorway pages created to rank for similar queries, and sites that violate the policies may rank lower or not appear at all.
- Can I ask customers for reviews?
- Yes, if you ask everyone and offer nothing in return. Google's policy prohibits incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods in exchange for reviews, and prohibits soliciting removal of negative ones; the FTC treats review manipulation as deceptive.
- How fast should this show results?
- Profile and review work often moves within weeks, while site-wide organic gains take longer; Google notes some changes take effect in hours and others take several months. No provider can guarantee a position, whatever the timeline promised.
