Should I hire SEO company, or handle search in house?

The question behind this one is rarely about search at all. It is whether the thing limiting your growth is visibility, and whether buying visibility from outside is cheaper than building it inside. Plenty of businesses hire an agency when the actual constraint is that nobody answers the phone, or the site cannot take a booking, or the product is being sold to the wrong buyer. An agency will happily accept the retainer either way. This page gives you a way to answer the question honestly before you spend anything: the conditions under which hiring makes sense, the work you should do yourself first, what the market actually costs, and how to compare firms once you have decided.

How to decide whether to hire an SEO company

  1. Check that search is really your constraint. Look at what happens to the enquiries you already receive. If calls go unanswered, quotes take a week, or the site cannot take a booking, more visitors will change very little. Fixing intake is usually cheaper and faster than a retainer, and it also raises the return on every marketing dollar you spend afterwards, so do it first regardless.
  2. Do the free basics yourself for a month. Claim and complete your business profile, correct your categories, get consistent details across the major listings, ask every customer for a review, and set up analytics and Search Console properties you own. This is a genuine share of local visibility, it costs time rather than budget, and doing it reveals how much appetite your team has for the rest.
  3. Price the alternatives against the same outcome. Compare an agency retainer with a part time specialist, a consultant advising an internal owner, and doing nothing. Express each as a monthly cost and the number of customers it would need to produce to break even. Many businesses discover the break even is one extra customer a month, and others discover it is twenty.
  4. Compare firms on disclosed minimums, not packages. Ask every candidate for the smallest engagement it will accept in writing, what is produced in house, and two current clients you may call. Those three answers rank a shortlist faster than any proposal, and a firm that has answered them before will send them the same day.

When hiring is clearly the right call

Hire when the work is continuous and beyond your team's capacity: a large site needing technical maintenance, a content programme that must ship every week, a multi location listings estate, or a migration where mistakes are expensive and hard to reverse. Hire when the competitive field in your vertical is mature, because catching entrenched incumbents needs sustained effort rather than a burst. Hire when nobody internally will own it, since search work that has no owner reliably stops after the third month.

Do not hire because a cold email said your rankings are slipping, or because a competitor did. Do not hire before you can measure what you already have, because the first honest thing an agency will tell you is that your measurement is broken, and you can find that out for free.

What to look for, and what should end the conversation

Look for a firm that will name the person doing the work, publish or disclose its minimum engagement, describe what happens in the first thirty days without charging for the description, and report on queries that produced nothing as well as those that produced something. Look for a contract where you own the analytics, the Search Console access, the content and the tracking numbers, and where the notice period is symmetric.

End the conversation over a guarantee of rankings, since nobody controls the results and the guarantee is either unenforceable or attached to a query nobody searches. End it over a request to transfer your domain or hosting into the agency's account. End it over link building sold as a monthly quantity, because purchasing links at a fixed rate is the pattern Google's spam policies describe as link schemes, and the penalty lands on your domain rather than on the vendor's.

What it costs, and how to read a quote

The spread between a listings only service and a full technical and content programme is enormous, which is why a single market average is useless to any individual buyer. The comparable number is each firm's disclosed minimum engagement against a fixed brief you wrote yourself. Our index records published starting prices and disclosed minimums as each firm states them, with the date checked, so a stale figure on a neglected page does not quietly enter your comparison.

Read a published starting price as the floor of the narrowest scope a firm will sell, not as a forecast. Then ask for the same brief to be quoted twice, once with content production included and once without, because content is the largest variable cost and the piece most often subcontracted. The gap between those two numbers tells you what kind of business you are actually hiring.

Questions people actually ask

Can I do SEO myself?
The local basics, yes, and they matter more than most owners expect. A complete business profile, accurate categories, real photos, consistent listings and a steady flow of genuine reviews are within reach of anyone. Agencies earn their fee above that line.
How long before hiring an agency pays for itself?
Work out how many additional customers a month cover the retainer, then judge the forecast against that number rather than against a traffic chart. Technical fixes can move quickly, while new content competing on established queries usually takes several months.
Is a cheap monthly package ever worth it?
Sometimes, for a single location business that needs listings maintained and a little content, provided you know that is what you are buying. It becomes a waste when it is sold as a growth programme, because the hours involved cannot support one.
What if I hire and it does not work?
Make sure you can tell. Own the analytics and Search Console properties, agree what counts as a lead before month one, and set a review point with named leading indicators. The worst outcome is not a failed engagement, it is a year of not knowing.
