The SEO services guarantee, read honestly
An SEO services guarantee is a promise attached to work whose outcome nobody controls. That does not make every guarantee dishonest, but it does mean the wording decides whether you are buying protection or a sales device. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says plainly that no one can guarantee a top ranking in Google Search, and treats anyone who promises one as a warning sign. What a provider can genuinely commit to is effort, delivery, reporting and refund terms, and a few will underwrite a specific, narrow, measurable outcome. This page explains which guarantees mean something, which ones collapse when you read the exclusions, and how the agencies in our index differ in what they are willing to put in a contract.

How to test an SEO services guarantee before you sign
- Ask what exactly is being guaranteed. A ranking, a volume of traffic, a number of enquiries, a quantity of delivered work, or a refund. These are wildly different promises. Get the specific noun in writing, because a proposal that says results guaranteed and nothing else is guaranteeing a word, not an outcome.
- Read the measurement clause, not the headline. If rankings are promised, ask which keywords, checked from which location, on which device, logged in or out, and by whose tool. Personalised and localised results mean two people can honestly see different positions for the same query on the same day, so an unspecified measurement method makes the promise unenforceable.
- Find the exclusions and the remedy. Most guarantees are voided by algorithm updates, by the client declining recommendations, by site changes made elsewhere, or by a missed content approval. Then check the remedy: free additional months are cheap for the provider, a cash refund is not. The difference tells you how much confidence sits behind the promise.
- Compare the guaranteed offer against an ordinary one. Price the same scope from a provider that offers no guarantee at all. Underwriting risk costs money, and it is usually recovered in the fee or in a longer minimum term. If the guaranteed option costs meaningfully more for the same deliverables, you are paying an insurance premium and should decide whether you want it.
Guarantees that are meaningful, and guarantees that are theatre
The workable versions commit to things the provider controls. A delivery guarantee, promising a defined quantity of pages, technical fixes or outreach each month with a credit if it slips, is honest and easy to check. A service level guarantee on response times and reporting is likewise real. So is a no lock in term, which is arguably stronger than any promise because it lets you leave the moment the work stops justifying itself. Some providers will guarantee a first page position for a very specific long tail phrase, which is achievable precisely because the phrase was chosen to be achievable, and is worth little unless anyone searches it.
The theatrical versions promise a general outcome and then define it away. Guaranteed traffic growth that counts branded searches you would have received anyway, guaranteed rankings measured on a set of terms the provider selects after the contract starts, or guaranteed leads where an unqualified form fill counts. Google's spam policies also matter here, because a provider that has underwritten an outcome has an incentive to reach it by whatever means work fastest, and the tactics that produce quick position changes are frequently the ones that trigger a manual action later. A guarantee should never be an invitation to take risks with your domain.
What the market actually publishes
Our index records what each provider states on its own website, with the date we checked. Guarantees cluster at the two ends of the market. Small local providers use them as a differentiator against a crowded field and tend to guarantee something narrow and local, such as appearing in a map pack for a defined service area. Larger firms working with established brands rarely offer one, because their contracts run on defined deliverables and a notice period instead. In between, the most common thing published is not a guarantee at all but a minimum engagement length, which is really the provider protecting itself against the same uncertainty.
That pattern is useful for a buyer. If a guarantee is the loudest thing on a provider's homepage, the rest of the site usually has less to say about method, team and named clients, and you should weight those absences accordingly. If a provider offers no guarantee but publishes a starting price, a minimum term and a clear description of what a month of work contains, you can compare that against a rival more reliably than you can compare two promises. Ask both types the same question: what will you have done by day ninety, and how will I check it?
Questions people actually ask
- Is any SEO guarantee legitimate?
- Yes, when it covers what the provider controls: quantity and timeliness of delivered work, response times, reporting, or a refund on defined terms. Google's hiring guidance warns specifically against guaranteed rankings, and that is the promise to walk away from rather than the concept of a guarantee itself.
- Why can nobody guarantee a number one ranking?
- Rankings are set by a third party whose systems change constantly, and results are personalised by location, device and history. A provider can influence the inputs, and a good one influences them a great deal, but the output is decided by Google and by whatever your competitors do next.
- What about pay on results or money back offers?
- Read the trigger and the remedy. If the money back is credit toward more of the same service, the provider has risked nothing. If it is a cash refund with a clear, independently checkable condition, it is real, though expect the fee or minimum term to be higher to cover that risk.
- Should a guarantee be my main selection criterion?
- No. Published pricing, a disclosed minimum engagement, named clients you can verify and a clear description of what is delivered in house will tell you more about a provider than any promise. Use the guarantee as a tiebreaker and as a prompt to read the contract properly.
