SEO for plumbing companies, compared on published evidence

Plumbing is one of the most heavily marketed trades in America, which means the agencies selling into it are practised at the pitch and the average buyer has heard the same promises three times. The useful question is not which agency sounds best but which one can show you a plumbing client that ranks in a real market, and what it will build for you each month. We compare firms on published evidence: named trade clients, disclosed pricing or minimums, and claims that survive a search you can run yourself. This page explains that method, what a plumbing engagement should actually contain, and where the money usually gets wasted.

How we compare agencies selling plumbing SEO

  1. Require a named plumbing or trades client. Home services experience is not interchangeable with ecommerce or software experience. We credit agencies that name trade clients and describe the work, and we discount logo walls with no market, no query and no description of what was actually done.
  2. Check the claim against live local results. A ranking claim is checkable in two minutes: search the term from the client's own city in a private window. Local results move with location, so a claim tested from the wrong city proves nothing. Agencies whose claims survive this test are a small and useful subset.
  3. Compare monthly output, not tier names. We look for the deliverable list: service pages built, town pages built, technical fixes applied, listings corrected, reviews process, links earned. Package names differ at every agency and mean nothing across them. Output is the only thing two proposals can be compared on.
  4. Record pricing and lock-in terms. We note published rates, stated minimums and contract length. A long lock-in with no performance exit mostly protects the agency. Where pricing is undisclosed we say so, because the hidden cost is the sales time you spend discovering a number others publish.

What a plumbing engagement should actually contain

The work divides into three parts and a proposal missing any of them is incomplete. Local visibility comes first, because emergency plumbing searches are dominated by the map results: a complete and accurate business profile, correct primary and secondary categories, service areas, hours including emergency availability, photographs of real vans and real crews, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Second, pages. One page for each service you want calls for, drain cleaning, water heater replacement, repiping, sewer line, and one for each town you actually serve, written about that town rather than find-and-replaced. Third, the technical layer: a site that loads fast on a phone, a number that is tappable on every screen, and your services and towns present in the page source rather than assembled by scripts.

What should not be in the proposal is a monthly blog quota with no relationship to what anyone searches. Plumbing customers do not read think pieces; they search a problem and a place. Every page in the plan should name the query it is built to answer, and if the agency cannot state that, the plan is a content calendar wearing an SEO label.

Where plumbing marketing money is usually wasted

The three classic leaks are duplicate or unclaimed listings quietly splitting your local authority, a site so slow on mobile that half the emergency traffic leaves before it loads, and calls that go unanswered outside business hours while the agency reports a rising lead count. All three are cheap to find and none of them requires an audit tool: check your listings by searching your own name, time your site on mobile data, and call your own number at nine in the evening.

The fourth leak is measurement. Cost per click and impressions are not results in this trade. Track calls, then booked jobs, then revenue by source, and insist that call tracking is set up so the agency's reported leads and your dispatch board can be reconciled. Agencies optimise toward whatever they are graded on, so grade them on booked work. Google's spam policies are also worth a read before you accept any tactic that sounds like a shortcut, since the cheap wins in this trade tend to be the ones that later cost a site its visibility.

Questions that sort the builders from the reporters

How many pages will you publish per month and which query does each target? Who writes them, and have they ever spoken to a plumber? Which of my competitors do you already work with in this metro? What happens to the site, the pages, the profile and the analytics if I leave? How will you measure a booked job rather than a form fill? Will I have direct access to my own Search Console and analytics?

The answers separate firms that build from firms that report. A builder can name the output; a reporter changes the subject to strategy. Neither is inherently dishonest, but they are different products at similar prices, and knowing which one you are buying is most of the decision.

Questions people actually ask

How long does plumbing SEO take to produce calls?
Local profile fixes can move visibility within weeks because they correct signals that were simply wrong. New service and town pages typically take one to two quarters to rank in a competitive metro, less in a smaller market. Anyone promising results in thirty days is describing paid ads or describing nothing.
Should I run ads at the same time?
Most plumbing businesses do, because organic takes quarters and the phone needs to ring now. Treat them as separate budgets with separate measurement, and make sure the agency invoices its fee separately from your media spend so you can see what each is costing you.
How many town pages can I legitimately have?
As many as you genuinely serve, provided each page is real: your actual work in that town, local details, and a distinct reason for existing. Mass-produced pages that differ only in the place name are the pattern Google's spam policies describe, and they tend to stop working and take neighbours down with them.
What should I own at the end of the contract?
The domain registered in your name, the hosting account, the website and every page produced for you, the Google Business Profile, the call tracking numbers, and your analytics and Search Console properties. Agree it in writing before signing. Recovering a domain or a phone number after a falling out is slow and sometimes expensive.
