Austin web development company options, compared on evidence
Austin has an unusually deep pool of web development talent for a city its size, which is good for buyers and confusing for them at the same time. The field runs from solo contractors building on a content management system, through small studios doing design and build, to engineering firms writing custom applications, and all three describe themselves the same way. The price range across those tiers is enormous and mostly justified. This page sets out what the firms in our index publish, what genuinely drives cost, and the sequence that turns a list of names into a shortlist you can compare on evidence rather than on portfolio design.

How to shortlist an Austin web development company
- Decide which tier of build you actually need. A marketing site on a mainstream platform, a heavily customised site with integrations, and a custom application are three different products with three different price ranges. Write down which one your requirements describe, then let each candidate agree or disagree with reasons. Buying tier three when tier one would do is the most expensive error here.
- Write the requirements before you take calls. List the pages, the integrations, who edits content after launch, the traffic you expect and any compliance requirements. A one page brief makes quotes comparable and exposes the firms that quote without asking questions. Every serious developer will come back with questions, and the quality of those questions is your first real signal.
- Ask for the minimum project size and the payment schedule. Ask in writing for the smallest project the firm accepts, how it stages payments, and what happens to the deposit if the project is cancelled. Ask specifically what triggers a change order, because scope disputes on fixed price builds are the single most common source of trouble in this category.
- Confirm who owns the code and where it lives. The repository, the domain, the hosting account and any third party service accounts should be in your name with the developer granted access. Ask whether the build uses proprietary components that stop working if you leave, and get the handover contents, code, documentation and credentials, written into the contract.
- Agree what support after launch costs. Ask what the warranty period covers, what a bug means as opposed to a change, and what ongoing maintenance costs per month. Security updates, backups, uptime monitoring and small content changes are ongoing needs, and a build quote that ignores them is not the real cost of the website.
What the Austin firms in our index publish
For each firm we record what appears on its own website with the date we read it: any published pricing or project minimum, stated services, named clients, team size and location. Development firms publish less pricing than marketing agencies do, because projects are genuinely bespoke, but a published minimum project size is common and is the most useful filter available to a buyer.
Named clients are the field worth checking. A firm publishing clients whose sites you can visit is offering evidence you can evaluate directly: load the site on a phone, look at how the content is structured, and see whether the thing still works two years after launch. That is a better test than any portfolio screenshot.
What drives the price of a build
Custom design is the first driver. A bespoke design system with original artwork and interaction detail costs multiples of a well configured theme, and for many businesses the theme is the correct answer. The second is integration: a build that talks to a customer platform, a payment provider, an inventory system or a booking engine carries testing and error handling work far beyond the page count.
The third is quality practice, and it is the one buyers underprice. Accessibility, performance budgets, automated testing and documentation add real hours and are what separates a site that survives three years from one that needs replacing after eighteen months. ADA.gov publishes guidance on how the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to web accessibility, which is worth reading before you accept a quote that treats it as optional.
The technical standards worth writing into the contract
Performance should be a stated target rather than a hope. Core Web Vitals, documented on web.dev, give measurable thresholds for loading, interactivity and layout stability, and Largest Contentful Paint in particular is a fair proxy for how fast the page feels on a phone. Put a target in the acceptance criteria and test against it before final payment.
Search foundations belong there too. Clean URL structure, correct redirects from any old site, crawlable navigation, sensible headings and structured data are cheap during a build and expensive afterwards. Google's SEO starter guide covers those basics, and a developer who cannot discuss them is likely to hand you a beautiful site that loses the traffic the old one had.
Questions people actually ask
- Solo contractor, studio or engineering firm?
- A solo contractor is often the best value for a straightforward marketing site, provided you accept the availability risk. A studio brings design and build together for a customised site. An engineering firm is what you need for an application with real logic, users and data. Match the tier to the requirement rather than to your revenue.
- Fixed price or time and materials?
- Fixed price suits well defined scopes and shifts risk to the developer, which is why change orders exist and why the change order clause deserves reading. Time and materials suits evolving products and requires trust plus a weekly view of hours. For a first engagement with an unfamiliar firm, a small fixed price phase is a sensible test.
- Does the developer need to be in Austin?
- Only if you value in person workshops or need someone on site with your team. Development is remote friendly work and the local premium buys proximity rather than quality. Where local does help is accountability, since a firm with a local reputation to protect tends to answer the phone.
- What should we do about hosting?
- Hold the hosting account in your own name and grant the developer access, even if they recommend and manage the platform. Managed hosting resold by an agency is convenient and often fine, but confirm what it costs directly, what the migration path is, and that you can move without rebuilding the site.
