SEO contractors

The phrase covers two different purchases. Some buyers mean an independent SEO contractor, a freelancer or consultant hired directly instead of an agency. Others mean SEO for contractors, the trade: firms that promote builders, roofers, electricians and remodelers. Both are worth comparing on the same evidence, because in each case the question is whether the provider publishes anything you can check. We record disclosed pricing or stated minimums, named clients that survive a search, and whether the provider's own presence backs up what it sells. This page explains the comparison and what a fair engagement looks like on either reading, before anybody quotes you.

How we compare SEO contractors and consultants

  1. Establish which purchase you are making. An independent consultant is usually cheaper per hour and better at diagnosis, but does not ship pages, links or technical fixes at volume. An agency costs more and includes production capacity. Decide which gap you are filling before you compare prices, because the two are not substitutes.
  2. Require pricing or a stated minimum. Hourly rates, project prices and monthly minimums are all comparable; refusing to name any of them is not. We record who publishes a figure, because a provider that prices after learning your budget is pricing you rather than the work.
  3. Verify the named clients yourself. Search the service and city a provider claims to have won and see whether the client actually appears. Claimed results that do not survive a search are the single most common failure in this market, and the check takes under a minute per claim.
  4. Read the contract for ownership and exit. The site, domain, content, analytics, ads account and any tracking numbers should be yours, with the provider granted access. Check the notice period and what happens to pages built during the engagement. This clause costs nothing to agree upfront and a great deal to discover later.

What an independent contractor gives you, and what it does not

A good independent consultant is often the best value in this market for diagnosis. They will tell you what is actually wrong, in what order to fix it, and what is not worth doing, without the incentive to sell a retainer that fits their production capacity. For a business with an in-house marketer or a capable developer, that combination is frequently enough: the consultant sets direction and reviews work, and your team ships.

What an independent cannot usually give you is throughput. Building fifty service and area pages, cleaning hundreds of listings, or running a continuous outreach program needs a team. The failure mode is predictable: an excellent audit is delivered, nobody has time to implement it, and a year later the same problems are quoted back by the next provider. Before hiring an independent, be honest about who is going to do the work.

SEO for the contracting trades, and what moves the price

On the other reading, the job is local search for a trade business: service and area pages for the work you want and the places you reach, a Google Business Profile that matches the licence on file, reviews collected continuously, photographs of real jobs, and measurement that stops at tracked calls. Price tracks how many trade and area combinations you want to win, how competitive those trades are in your metro, and whether the site needs rebuilding before anything else can work.

The reliable warning sign in this segment is the templated page: the same paragraph with a different town name, repeated across every place the provider claims to cover. It is cheap to produce, it reads as filler to a human, and Google's spam policies treat scaled content produced primarily to manipulate rankings as a violation. Ask to see two pages the provider wrote for two different towns for the same client, and read them side by side.

Questions people actually ask

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?
Per hour, usually yes. Per outcome it depends on whether you have people to implement what they recommend. A cheaper adviser plus an unimplemented plan costs more than a dearer agency that ships. Compare on what will actually be different on your site in ninety days.
What should a contractor pay monthly for SEO?
It varies with area count, trade competitiveness and how much building is involved, so treat any single figure with suspicion. What matters more is whether the fee covers real hours of production and what those hours produce. Ask for the deliverables list and the hours behind it, then compare across quotes.
How do I check a provider's claimed results?
Search the exact term and location they claim, on a clean browser, and see whether the client appears. Then look at the page: was it written for that town, or is it a template? Two minutes of checking eliminates more candidates than any reference call.
What should I be reported each month?
What shipped, and what it produced: pages published, technical fixes made, listings corrected, plus tracked calls and enquiries attributed to specific pages. Ranking charts are diagnostics. A report with no output list is a report about a month in which nothing may have happened.
