Medical device marketing companies, compared on evidence
Marketing a medical device is not marketing with extra paperwork. The audience is usually a clinician, a purchasing committee and a reimbursement pathway rather than a consumer, the claims you may make are bounded by what your clearance or approval actually covers, and a single careless sentence on a website can become a regulatory problem rather than a bad quarter. Most generalist agencies discover this halfway through a project. This page shows what the providers in our index publish about price and minimum engagement, what genuinely separates a device capable agency from a competent generalist, and the questions to ask before a scope is signed.

How to choose a device marketing partner
- Confirm they work inside your cleared indication. Every claim in a campaign has to sit within what your clearance or approval actually covers, and promotional material that drifts beyond it creates real exposure. Ask a candidate how they source claims, who checks them, and how they handle a marketing idea the indication does not support.
- Establish the review workflow before the creative. Device marketing lives or dies on the loop between marketing, regulatory and legal. Agree who reviews, in what order, with what turnaround, and how many rounds are included in the fee. Agencies unused to this consistently underestimate it and lose the schedule in month two.
- Match the channel mix to who actually decides. A clinician champion, a value analysis committee and a hospital procurement lead need different material. Ask a candidate to map the buying committee for your device and to name which asset serves each role, before anyone discusses campaigns or budgets.
- Agree measurement that a long sales cycle can support. Device sales cycles run quarters, so marketing cannot be judged on monthly closed revenue. Fix the intermediate signals you will track, qualified clinician enquiries, demo requests, evaluation starts, and agree how they are recorded in your systems before spend begins.
What device agencies publish, and what they do not
Our index records what each provider states on its own website, with the date we checked. Regulated business to business categories are among the least transparent we track, and device marketing is near the bottom for published pricing. The reason is structural rather than evasive: engagements are scoped to a product, a launch stage and a review burden that varies enormously, so a published number would misdescribe most projects.
That makes the disclosed minimum engagement the more useful figure to chase, and it is usually given plainly by email. Ask each candidate for the smallest project they will take and a range for a representative launch, including the cost of regulatory review cycles, since those cycles are where generalist quotes most often prove optimistic.
What separates a device agency from a good generalist
Three things, and none of them is design quality. First, familiarity with promotional claim discipline: a device capable agency writes to the indication, keeps a claims matrix, and expects every statement to trace to a source. Second, comfort with clinical evidence, meaning they can read a study, represent it fairly and resist the temptation to round a finding up. The Federal Trade Commission's health products compliance guidance is a useful shared reference here, since its standard for substantiating health claims applies to promotional material regardless of which regulator reviews it.
Third, patience with the buying committee. Consumer instincts push toward urgency and emotion, which reads as unserious to a clinician evaluating a device and can actively damage credibility. Ask candidates for two device or diagnostics clients by name, then read their material and judge whether it sounds like it was written for a physician or at one.
Questions people actually ask
- Do I need an agency that only does medical devices?
- Not necessarily, but you need one that has done it before and can prove it. A generalist with two device clients and a working relationship with a regulatory reviewer is often a better fit than a specialist whose experience is entirely in a different device class. What you cannot afford is an agency learning claim discipline on your material, since the cost of that education is measured in review cycles and, occasionally, in regulatory correspondence.
- How long does a device launch programme take?
- Longer than the equivalent consumer campaign, mostly because of review. Expect the creative development itself to run on a normal timeline and then add cycles for regulatory and legal review of every claim bearing asset. Agencies that have done this build the review calendar into the plan from the start. Ask to see a launch timeline from a previous engagement with review steps visible, and treat its absence as a warning.
- Should marketing target clinicians or patients?
- It depends on how the device reaches the patient and what your labelling permits. Many devices are chosen by a clinician and never known to the patient by name, which makes clinician education the whole job. Others benefit from patient awareness that prompts a conversation. The mistake is running patient facing material for a device whose adoption is decided entirely inside a hospital committee, which is expensive and changes nothing.
- Who owns the claims in the material?
- You do, always, and no agency arrangement transfers that. The practical implication is that your review process is the control, not the agency's care. Keep a claims matrix mapping every marketing statement to its supporting source, require the agency to work from it rather than around it, and make sure someone on your side signs off before anything publishes. Good agencies welcome this because it makes their job faster.
