Sign company lead generation, compared on disclosure
Sign shops buy leads under an awkward constraint: the enquiries range from a single vinyl decal to a multi site channel letter programme, and the marketing that produces the first is not the marketing that produces the second. A provider quoting a cost per lead without saying which kind of lead is quoting a number that cannot be compared. This index records what lead generation providers publish before you speak to them: how they price, the smallest engagement they accept, which clients they will name, and whether the leads are exclusive to you or shared with competitors in your area. Those four disclosures do most of the filtering that a shortlist needs.

How providers are compared here
- Pricing recorded in its published shape. Monthly retainers, per lead pricing and setup fees are recorded separately rather than blended, because a retainer and a per lead price answer different questions about who carries the risk when volume disappoints.
- Exclusivity is recorded explicitly. Whether an enquiry is sold to you alone or shared with several sign companies in the same territory changes its value entirely. Where a provider states its policy in public, that statement is recorded rather than inferred from sales language.
- Minimum engagement. The smallest contract a provider will accept filters a shortlist faster than any other single figure, particularly for a shop whose whole marketing budget sits below some providers' floor. It is recorded separately from any advertised starting price.
- Named clients and verifiable work. Only clients a provider names publicly count toward its disclosure. Anonymous case studies about a regional sign manufacturer are treated as marketing, since a buyer cannot telephone them to ask how the engagement actually went.
The two markets hiding inside one query
Transactional work, meaning banners, decals, yard signs and small format print, is high volume, price sensitive and won largely on being findable and quick to quote. The buyer often decides within a day and rarely reads much. Marketing for this half is local search visibility, a fast quote path and clear turnaround information.
Project work, meaning storefront signage, channel letters, wayfinding, permitting and installation, is a considered purchase with a long lead time, several decision makers and a site survey. It is won on evidence of similar completed projects, permit competence and the ability to survive a procurement process. A provider who describes both halves in one funnel has not thought about the difference, and the sign shop pays for that in unqualified quote requests.
Exclusive leads, shared leads and what each is worth
Some providers generate enquiries on their own properties and sell each one to several sign companies covering the same area. Shared leads are cheaper per unit and are worth substantially less, because you are quoting against two or three competitors who received the same enquiry at the same minute and the winner is often simply the fastest to call back.
Exclusive arrangements cost more and are worth more, provided exclusivity is actually contractual rather than implied on a sales call. Ask directly, ask for it in writing, and ask what territory exclusivity covers. Ask also who owns the website or landing page the leads arrive through, because a provider building on its own domain keeps the asset your money built when the contract ends.
What to measure, and what to ignore
Cost per lead is the number providers report and the least useful one to manage by, because a sign shop's lead values differ by an order of magnitude between a decal enquiry and a storefront project. Track cost per quoted job and cost per won job instead, split by job type, even if that means a simple spreadsheet maintained by whoever handles enquiries.
Two months of that record will tell you more than any provider dashboard, and it converts the renewal conversation from an argument about attribution into arithmetic. It also tells you when the problem is not the provider: if enquiries arrive and nobody calls back within the hour, the leads were never the constraint.
Questions people actually ask
- Retainer or pay per lead?
- Pay per lead moves volume risk to the provider and usually costs more per enquiry, which suits a shop with capacity to fill and no appetite for fixed cost. A retainer usually builds assets you keep, such as pages and rankings on your own domain, and suits a shop planning beyond the next quarter. Ask what remains yours in each case.
- Should we pay for a site the provider owns?
- Generally no, or at least not without knowing. If the pages producing your enquiries live on the provider's domain, ending the contract ends the enquiries and the ranking history stays with them. Where a provider does work this way it is not automatically disqualifying, but it should be disclosed and reflected in the price.
- How fast do we need to respond to a lead?
- For shared leads, minutes. For project enquiries, same day is usually enough but the first substantive reply still tends to shape the shortlist. Before increasing spend, check whether existing enquiries are being answered promptly, because buying more leads to feed a slow response is the most expensive way to discover an internal problem.
- Do reviews matter for a sign company?
- Yes, particularly for local project work where a business owner is choosing a contractor they have never used. Ask every completed customer the same way, disclose any incentive, and never filter by expected sentiment before requesting. The FTC's endorsement guides govern testimonials and incentivised reviews, and a provider generating reviews on your behalf is acting in your name.
